Yesterday was so eventful that I didn’t wake up until the afternoon. Dragging my half-asleep body, I grabbed my military jacket draped over the chair and picked up a cigarette.
—Click.
Still groggy, I half-opened my eyes, lit the cigarette, and watched the smoke rise.
“Phew.”
While smoking, I fiddled with my phone and saw a message that the pre-ordered DIY bed had been delivered.
With the cigarette in my mouth, I opened the iron gate and saw two large boxes with handles.
After putting out the cigarette, I carried the boxes inside and spent a while assembling the bed following the instructions. Finally, a decent-looking bed was complete.
I placed the newly ordered mattress on the assembled bed and rolled around for a bit. Then, the message I saw on the status window yesterday popped into my head.
“Status window!”
[Ding!]
<Would you like to move to the Basic Training Ground?>
The still lingering move prompt appeared before my eyes.
“What the hell… Where am I supposed to go?”
The contract etched in the status window.
[Contract Deity: Mara Papiyas (Demon King)]
[Contract Deity: Siddhartha Gautama (Shakyamuni)]
Just reading the names was enough to fill me with unease.
Staring at the prompt, I delayed my response and picked up my phone.
—Ga-eul-ahhhh!!!
As soon as I called, before the ringtone could even finish, my sister’s lively voice answered as if she’d been waiting.
“Sister!!”
—Ga-eul-ah!!!
“Sister!!!!”
—Pwahaha! Did Ga-eul get hit by a train or something?
“I just missed you, that’s all.”
—Hehe. Really? Well, I guess I have no choice. Should I come see you?
Hearing my sister’s voice instantly lifted my mood.
“Let’s meet later. I have to go somewhere real quick.”
—Where? With who? What about me? I wanna go too!!
I calmed my excited sister and continued.
“It’s just a quick trip. I called because I wanted to hear your voice before I go.”
—Oh, was that it? Bummer.
“I went to the military yesterday, you know? I’ll tell you all about it when I get back. I’ve got a lot to share.”
—Why’d you suddenly go to the military?
“I made a promise to a viewer while gaming, and the viewer happened to be a soldier, so I went to visit them.”
—Wow, that’s wild. Alright. You better tell me all about it when you get back.
“Yep. Let’s grab something tasty and chat then.”
—Deal!!
“Okay! Bye-bye.”
After hanging up with my sister, the status window message I’d been ignoring came back into view.
“Damn it, let’s go!”
As I waved my hand through the air, the room twisted, and then—
The scent of grass filled the air.
In front of me stretched a vibrant field, and beside it stood a thatched-roof house.
Suddenly, while in the rooftop room, I was startled by the sight of a clear sky with leisurely drifting clouds.
“Is anyone here?”
My panicked shout was met with a system sound.
[Ding!]
<Welcome to the Basic Training Ground>
<This place is both the Basic Training Ground and the user's personal territory>
<Wishing you the best of luck>
[Ding!]
[The environment has changed, and the shop list is being reconfigured]
“What? What are you talking about?”
[Ding!]
[The assistant has requested to visit the lord]
The flood of messages left me dazed. I couldn’t understand where I was or what “reconfiguration” and “assistant” meant.
[Ding!]
[The assistant has requested to visit the lord]
As I was still processing the messages, the “visit request” message popped up again, as if urging me.
“…Do as you please.”
In a half-resigned state, I accepted the message, which seemed to talk on its own without waiting for a response. Then, light gathered in the sky and transformed into a large snowflake.
The snowflake, carried by the wind, floated down and landed right in front of me. It hovered in the air, stopping just before my nose.
When I reached out my palm, the snowflake fell into my hand as if it had been waiting.
It felt warm and fluffy. Upon closer inspection, it wasn’t a snowflake but a cotton ball.
─Twitch
“Huh?”
The small cotton ball on my hand twitched, and a pair of cute ears popped out.
“A rabbit?”
As it stretched out from its crouched position, the white cotton ball turned into a tiny baby rabbit.
With its adorable ears, small feet, and tiny body, it looked like it was made purely of cuteness.
“What are you?”
“I’m the assistant, Baekto.”
“Ahh!”
I was startled when the rabbit suddenly responded to my muttered question, as if I were talking to an animal. Without thinking, I shook my hand.
As I calmed my startled heart, the rabbit in front of me disappeared, and I felt a warm sensation on my head. Reaching up, I pulled down a white rabbit by the scruff of its neck.
“Did you just talk?”
Placing the rabbit on my palm, I asked, and it answered.
“Yes, future master.”
“A rabbit that talks…”
Thinking that adding one strange animal to this bizarre situation wouldn’t make much difference, I continued my questions.
“So why are you here? Who are you?”
“I’m the assistant, Baekto.”
It repeated what it had said earlier.
“Where did you come from?”
“Sky.”
At the baby rabbit’s words, I looked up and saw nothing but drifting white clouds. I waved the white flag at the rabbit, who kept giving the same answer.
“Hmm…”
With no progress in the competition, I approached the thatched-roof house in front of me, bringing the rabbit along. Peeking inside, I saw only an empty room.
Sitting down on the porch, I placed the rabbit on my lap and stroked it. Its fluffy, warm fur enveloped my palm.
“This feels healing and happy. Is this why Grandfather kept petting it?”
As I absentmindedly stroked the rabbit, a gentle breeze blew by, pleasantly brushing through my hair.
“Rabbit.”
At my voice, the rabbit perked up its ears but didn’t respond. It seemed to be listening, though.
“What am I supposed to do here?”
“Training to become stronger.”
“Training? Why should I do that?”
“Choice.”
“Choice…”
Unless aliens invaded Earth, there was no reason to get stronger. Yet, no human would reject strength. Whether it leads to power or wealth, the desire for strength is a human instinct.
“Are you going to train me?”
Feeling my touch, the rabbit closed its eyes and lifted its tiny front paw.
[Ding!]
<Basic Training Wooden Doll has been summoned.>
“What the!”
Startled by the message, I jumped up. A light shimmered in the yard, and a wooden doll carved from wood appeared.
It creaked into motion, raising its arms and taking a fighting stance.
“You want me to fight that thing?”
I felt the rabbit, who had somehow climbed up, tapping my head with its paw.
The wooden doll seemed ready to charge. I threw my military jacket onto the porch and raised my arms.
At that moment, the doll rushed at me, throwing a punch.
I quickly raised my arm to block, and the doll’s fist collided with my arm.
“Ugh! Is this wooden block crazy?”
The punch felt heavier than expected, as if the full weight of the wood was behind it.
I pushed the doll’s arm away with all my might, causing its arm to shoot upward, leaving its face exposed.
Seeing that, I pushed off with my legs and exploded forward.
My fist pulled back, ready to unleash all my strength.
Hup!
[A pitiful Heavy Hit is imbued.]
—Bang!
My fist smashed into the doll’s face, and its wooden head shattered.
“Ha… Ha…”
As I looked at the headless, fallen doll, a system sound chimed.
It rang out.
[Ding!]
[The Mana of Gluttony has been unleashed.]
[A portion of guilt has disappeared.]
[+10,000 won]
[EXP +2]
[Growth Rate: 2%]
As I exhaled roughly and looked at the fallen wooden doll, I could almost hear the sound of chewing and mumbling in my ears.
[Gluttony devours the opponent.]
[+10,000 won]
[EXP +2]
[Growth Rate: 4%]
“Phew… Money? EXP?”
The money, EXP, and the corresponding growth rate written in the message that popped up. Checking the Status Window, it was clear that the money had been added after defeating the wooden doll.
Even though it was just training, I didn’t feel much interest before, but after knocking down the wooden doll, my thoughts changed.
It feels like I’ve become a game character.
It’s different from those FPS shooting games I wasn’t good at. The grinding in Hellon Chronicles and real-life grinding—both are my specialties within my domain.
I laughed, thinking it was pretty fun.
“But still, this isn’t it, Rabbit. You should’ve said something before starting. Should I turn you into rabbit stew? You think you won’t die just because you’re cute?”
As if rebelling against my words, I could feel the rabbit still hanging above my head, tapping my head with its front paws.
“I’m the owner, you know.”
“Provisional owner.”
At the rabbit’s words, I reached up, grabbed the fluffy ball, and pulled it down. A baby rabbit dangled in my hand, swaying.
“Provisional owner?”
Placing the rabbit on my palm and locking eyes, its ears twitched.
“No name.”
“You don’t have a name? It’s Baekto, right?”
“That’s the species, human.”
“…This brat is really getting on my nerves.”
It seemed like it wanted me to give it a name, so after some thought, I spoke to the rabbit.
“For white ones, this is the national rule. Pick one. Sugar, Cloud, Salt, Tofu.”
“…I chose the wrong owner.”
