Chapter 437
Chapter 437 Atmosphere Destroyer
Xia Xinyan paused slightly.
…Has she gotten stuck in her own thoughts again?
Maybe it was because of her past life; every time she encountered something related to demons, she couldn’t help but dive deeper into considerations and end up getting lost in them.
Ling Mo’s words pulled her back from that state—she suddenly realized that she had indeed neglected Ling Mo’s feelings a bit.
“Sorry,” she said softly, “I spaced out.”
After a pause, she tilted her head to look at Ling Mo, bit her lip, and said, “I know this habit of mine isn’t great… I’ll try my best to change it.”
“Is it because of your past life?” Ling Mo asked.
Xia Xinyan was silent for two seconds before nodding, “Yeah.”
Even though Monica had told her more than once that it was all fake, she still found it difficult to completely shake off the habits formed by that memory.
Perhaps she just hadn’t paid attention to it before, but now, it was time for a change.
Ling Mo looked into her eyes for a moment and sighed, “It’s okay, I’ll be with you.”
He was willing to tolerate all of Xia Xinyan’s shortcomings and quirks and to accompany her in changing them.
“…Thank you.” At that moment, Xia Xinyan felt something oddly wonderful.
Ling Mo’s status in her heart had changed several times; the most recent change was her acknowledgment of him moving from a friend to a boyfriend… Even declaring unilaterally that she was willing to marry him.
She used to think that Ling Mo was the one reaching for her… well, not necessarily reaching, but it felt like he just could not do without her, making her feel secure.
But now… she somehow thought that maybe she wasn’t good enough for Ling Mo.
Even though she possessed memories of living a life as Ling Mo, after such a long time, as she gradually shed the impact of that memory on her personality, her true self started to emerge, and she found that she had quite a few flaws compared to Ling Mo.
Yet, Ling Mo had never once said he wanted to give up on her or complained about her shortcomings. He had been continuously accommodating her and staying by her side.
Perhaps similar situations had happened before—at least, she was sure that she often fell into a deep state of contemplation, and though Ling Mo had never said anything about it… but now, perhaps even he couldn’t bear it any longer.
Having a girlfriend who worries for no reason must be quite a headache, right?
She really should thank Ling Mo for being so accommodating up to now.
Ling Mo paused for a second and shook his head, “Do we still need to say thank you between us? No matter what happens, it’s what I should do.”
Then, the room fell silent for a moment.
“Mo Mo.” The silence was broken by Xia Xinyan’s voice.
“Hmm?” Ling Mo responded.
“Close your eyes.” Xia Xinyan said softly.
Ling Mo blinked, surprised, but obediently closed his eyes.
Xia Xinyan looked at his face, remained silent for a moment, and then slowly leaned closer to him.
She used to think that this action was a reward for Ling Mo, but now… she felt… it was just her heartfelt impulse.
Wanting to…
Beep beep beep—!!
Suddenly, the intercom call shattered the perfectly romantic atmosphere.
Xia Xinyan instantly stepped back, creating some distance from Ling Mo and cleared her throat, “There’s communication.”
Although Ling Mo had his eyes closed, he could sense the change in the atmosphere and realized that Xia Xinyan wanted to do something, so being interrupted by a perfectly timed communication call made him feel an inexplicable urge to punch someone.
But thankfully, his good self-control quickly calmed him down, and he picked up the intercom hanging at his waist and connected the call.
Immediately, the voice of the chubby guy came through: “Coo coo coo?”
It was an exaggerated, deliberately suppressed pigeon-like call.
Ling Mo: “…”
He struggled to suppress his annoyance and replied, “Spit it out.”
“Wow, I was afraid of accidentally exposing your identities, so I even came up with a less obvious nickname. I put so much thought into it, and you’re just going to insult me? Do you have a heart?” The chubby guy immediately responded with a tone full of grievance.
“It’s fine, I’m hanging up.” Ling Mo felt the urge to punch someone again.
“Of course, there’s something,” the chubby guy hurriedly got to the point, “It’s getting late, so we figured you had found a safe residence and wanted to check in to see how things were going. We didn’t interrupt you, right?”
“You did.”
“…”
After a moment of silence, the chubby guy cleared his throat twice, “Since we interrupted, it probably ruins the atmosphere, right? So let’s just keep bothering you—just wanted to ask if you’ve discovered anything?”
Ling Mo adjusted his mindset and said, “Found quite a bit, and they’re significant discoveries. But for now, I haven’t thought about how to handle that information, and it’s not convenient to tell you at the moment. What I can say is that we’re pretty safe here, this identity disguise is effective, and those demons have taken us for one of their own.”
After a pause, he continued, “Next, we might stay here for a while longer, gathering as much intelligence as possible before our identities are exposed, so unless there’s something particularly urgent, don’t contact us proactively.”
The chubby guy immediately asked, “So you’re not going to keep in touch for a regular safety check? It wouldn’t take up your time; I’m just concerned about you guys, right? Plus, if I send a ‘coo coo’ three times as a signal, you don’t have to worry about being exposed if you’re not safe, right?”
“Are you dumb? Even before you say your signal, the intercom can give away our identities!” Ling Mo couldn’t hold back.
Is this chubby guy just trying to stir trouble?
“…Oh, I forgot you guys have to connect first.” The chubby guy laughed awkwardly, “Fine, fine, if there’s anything urgent, just contact us directly; we’re on standby twenty-four seven.”
Ling Mo acknowledged and was about to hang up when Xia Xinyan chimed in, “How’s the preparation work with other forces going?”
“Pretty good,” the chubby guy replied affirmatively, “New Dawn is moving quite fast—oh, right, New Dawn seems to have discovered something about Eden’s whereabouts, and now Summer Jincang and the Ability Bureau are starting to investigate the matter. Just wanted to let you know.”
“Eden…” Xia Xinyan frowned slightly, “That’s good; dealing with these troubles early can ensure things are more stable.”
“Then that’s that. If anything comes up later, I’ll notify you… or maybe it’s best if you call when you have something to mention. No rush,” the chubby guy said and then hung up the call.
Ling Mo tossed the intercom into his spatial watch.
He was initially worried that if they placed the intercom in the spatial watch, they wouldn’t be able to receive urgent news from the stronghold in time, so he kept it at his waist, but now it seemed… it was indeed better to keep it in the spatial watch.
“Xinyan,” he rubbed his chin and looked at Xia Xinyan, “Do we continue what we were doing earlier?”
“…Let’s just sleep early.”
“…Oh.”
