Chapter 35 – Darkmtl

Chapter 35

Sabrina’s explanation was concise, containing only the crucial points.

The fact that Nemesis had kidnapped Raine and was planning large-scale human experiments, and that David caused terrorism in order to save her.

Creating a blackout and spreading sleeping gas was likely an attempt to minimize the number of victims caught in the accident, and that the only task left was for him to rush to the VIP banquet hall and rescue Raine.

Having heard all of this, Raven rubbed his chin and nodded in agreement.

“Hmm… So that was the situation. The Hexahemia Syndrome.”

“Do you know well about the illness that Raine has?”

“It’s a rare disease that not many know about. It’s a property of blood that reacts to magical powers. So, this suspicious activity Nemesis is involved in, could it be related to this?”

Raven acknowledged that Sabrina’s assertion had no significant logical flaws.

Planning large-scale human experiments to create Hexahemia serum was something difficult to accept rationally, but there were indeed a few crazy individuals in this city who would engage in such madness.

If Hexahemia serum were to be supplied stably and perfectly dominate the market for interspecies prosthetics, the economic value generated from it would surely be dizzying.

However, that was merely one-sided claims from the party that caused the terror.

Whether that content could be trusted was another matter, different from whether the assertion had logical flaws.

“Worker. Did you think you could help just because you believed what he said was true?”

“N-no, it’s not a lie! It’s the truth!”

Sabrina, who felt wrongfully suspected, reacted strongly.

But Raven was a cold adult who valued solid evidence over emotional appeals.

Even if the fight with Lexi was unavoidable due to urgency.

To get his help here, convincing him in a reasonable manner was necessary.

Could that really be possible?

“Hmm… There’s no tangible evidence in sight. I can’t just say I read it in the original work. No, I can’t even say that in the first place.”

In the original work, things seemed to go smoothly.

Now that I was in this situation, I had no idea what could be taken as evidence.

From the halfway point, the existence of the original work had become meaningless due to chaos.

While I was racking my brain trying to find a way to uncover Nemesis’s schemes, a sudden voice of a stranger echoed from the entrance of the hallway.

“Hey! What are you doing over there! This area is off-limits to unauthorized personnel!”

Just from hearing it roughly, the hysteric and piercing voice made all three of us instinctively turn our heads toward the source.

There stood a woman with a high-pressure face and red glasses.

It was a face I recognized. I had forgotten her name, but she was certainly the lead researcher in charge of the Hexahemia human experiment plan… the one who ordered the kidnapping of Raine.

Why was she here? Shouldn’t she be in the VIP banquet hall?

I tilted my head at the sudden appearance of evidence, realizing that this moment had to be shortly after the blackout occurred.

Ah, before the blackout, she must have been managing the staff downstairs. What a fortunate turn of events.

I quickly tugged at Raven’s collar to make him look at me, gesturing that we had to capture that woman.

If we rummaged through that woman’s belongings right now, we could definitely find something meaningful. There was no doubt about it.

“Security! What are you doing right now? We have weirdos causing a ruckus in our area! Just take them out… guack!”

Whirr, thud!

The gun Raven casually threw spun in the air and landed perfectly on the researcher’s forehead.

It was as if he had never exercised; she didn’t notice the flying gun until it was about to hit her. Was her reflex as slow as a sloth?

With a thud, the researcher fell backward, her eyes rolling back.

Raven, who had unexpectedly discarded his favorite gun, scratched his head and muttered in disbelief.

“Is this really okay…?”

“…!”

“Don’t worry.”

“I can see that too, you idiot.”

I nodded with clenched fists, as if to tell Raven not to worry as he sighed deeply.

Then I rushed over to the fallen researcher, rummaging through her belongings and managed to obtain a suspicious data chip that was clearly worth investigating.

I had a feeling. This was it, one hundred percent!

“This… Let me check the contents.”

Receiving the item from me, Raven inserted the data chip into his device.

Suddenly, overwhelming data surged into his device, causing it to stutter.

How much information could possibly fit in this small chip?

As he carefully read through the contents, a frown formed on Raven’s forehead.

“This is…”

“What does it say?”

“It’s a presentation material made for VIPs. It has detailed information about the large-scale human experiments you mentioned earlier. This is… too lethal to be glossed over.”

See? I told you it wasn’t a lie. Why do you suspect people and make things hard?

As I reproached him for being so suspicious, he suddenly grabbed my head and pushed me down again.

Ouch, this will make me shrink!

“Hmm, an interesting thought just came to me.”

“An interesting thought?”

“Yeah, I’ll send this material to a journalist I know without missing a single word. Where would you find anything as stimulating as this these days? The hidden darkness of the interspecies prosthetic specialist company, Nemesis. Large-scale illegal biological experiments? Something along those lines would explode in viewership. Nemesis would soon get butchered from all sides.”

Raven said this and immediately contacted someone on his device.

A journalist he knew… Hmm, he definitely must have influence. He’s a notorious paparazzo in the entertainment industry.

But even if he’s a notorious paparazzo, being a named figure in the industry could turn out beneficial if used wisely.

The events that would unfold from there were obvious without needing to pry too much.

The Dragon Market, nearly having a fit over the Nexus Project that they couldn’t seize, would be the first to react to this article and likely order a fact-check.

The police hurriedly dispatched to catch the terrorists would detain the Nemesis personnel on site who went from victims to suspects, and they would closely examine whether this was all part of the plan.

Naturally, the large-scale human experiment plan that was set to score big would naturally come to light, while the instigator of the terror, David, would take Raine and vanish.

Huh? Aren’t they going to be caught if the police keep chasing?

Don’t worry about that; the esteemed Dragon Market, having calculated the details of the case and the scale of the terror damage, would order to let them go discreetly. So, that part was nothing to worry about.

Thanks to the comparatively mild means of blackout and sleeping gas, there hadn’t been any casualties, and our enthusiastic Dragon Market promised to compensate for the damages no matter what; who would dare to complain?

*Sigh*… It’s done. Somehow, we managed to patch things up. I almost thought my heart would jump out when I saw David and Lexi.

Suddenly, my tension eased, fatigue washed over me.

Now that I felt like I didn’t need to meddle anymore, I figured everything would work itself out, the strong tension I had forgotten returned with a vengeance.

Come to think of it, I hadn’t eaten all day, right?

Once I clock out today, I’m definitely going to binge on a steak sandwich. Double the meat for sure.

As I rubbed my rumbling stomach and looked around, I suddenly felt something was off.

But where’s Alice? It’s just Raven here.

“…?”

“Huh? Why? Looking for Alice?”

“…!”

“She probably inhaled the sleeping gas and is sleeping peacefully now. She should be waking up soon.”

Oh, she must have breathed in the sleeping gas.

I chuckled at the absence of Alice who had been out of sight for a while, then suddenly gazed at Raven as a question popped into my mind.

…Wait, is this person a mind reader?

How can he tell what I’m thinking just from a glance?

“I’m not reading thoughts. I just have good observational skills. You’re so transparent that I can easily see what you’re thinking.”

“…!!”

“Did I get it right again?”

Scary! That’s even more terrifying than actually being able to read minds!

I shuddered at Raven’s ridiculous ability.

But really, am I that transparent? Thanks to the mask, my face isn’t even visible…

As I was disheartened by my own terrible poker face, Raven suddenly placed his hand on top of my head. That awkward gesture made my chest hurt twice as much.

Boom…

At that moment, a slight tremor seemed to shake the building.

I sensed something unusual was happening instinctively.

“This is…”

“Could it be, brother!”

We exchanged urgent glances and hurried out of the hallway.

When we reached a place with a large window that offered a view outside, I spotted two figures in the sky up ahead.

“That’s, my foolish brother and Raine…!”

“Oh, what a picturesque scene.”

“…!”

A bloodied man flying through the air, tightly holding onto a woman in a dress.

It was an almost painterly sight at first glance.

The glass shards scattered around them sparkled as they reflected the sunlight.

It felt as if the world itself was blessing them.

As I leaned against the window watching them, I recalled the conversation they might be having high up in that blue sky, from the memory of the original work.

-Fool, you don’t have to go that far and bleed out like this. What am I to you…

-Raine is my precious person. You’ve made me wholly David when I could easily have vanished without a name, and that’s thanks to you.

-Pffft, why is that thanks to me? You worked hard and earned it yourself. I didn’t really do anything.

-…And I’m sorry for not being able to keep the promise of making you happy.

-Fool, what are you talking about? You’ve already kept it. I’m happier now than ever before…

Yes, indeed, childhood friends must end up happy.

I felt the struggles of all this time receiving a reward as I quietly watched David and Raine safely land and move away from the scene.

They would probably suffer for about three days, but after that, it would surely be a smooth road ahead. I hoped they wouldn’t worry too much.

And so, the Nemesis terror incident came to a splendid climax.

Indeed, whether rolling forward or backward, a happy ending is the best. A smile escaped me.
