Chapter 239
Chapter 239 – Those Affected (2)
The ones influenced by him were not just the hunters of Creature Hunting. Those who were in even more extreme situations regarded him just as importantly as the residents did.
“Is there no problem with vaccine production? Like needing to change parts again as before…”
“F-fortunately, it seems there’s nothing for now.”
Park Dong-soo, a researcher linked with the virus that pushed the world into destruction and now devoted to vaccine development using the facility, nodded while looking around cautiously.
Thanks to the vaccine, his life was spared. Without it, he would have been torn to shreds by the angry survivors.
“Then, this time, we just need to fetch the supplies we always seek.”
Oh Chan-woo, despite his young age, had become one of the core members of this growing group of survivors, and he nodded at Park Dong-soo’s assurance that it was no problem.
Vaccine production was their top priority. In fact, they had no choice in the matter. It was a kind of obligation.
‘We must keep producing vaccines to continue receiving their help.’
Recalling the events from a few days ago, Oh Chan-woo stepped outside the facility with a tense expression.
The group of survivors, once the weakest hiding from a few raiders, had quickly formed a huge village centered around this facility, but it wasn’t entirely due to their own strength.
Moreover, the power necessary to protect this village was also insufficient by their own means. They needed to continually receive ‘external help.’
“…Who are you?”
That day, at that moment, Oh Chan-woo and the survivors froze upon seeing an unfamiliar person who suddenly appeared.
They had expected Riena to come, but it turned out that it was not Riena.
With bright, pale green hair and shimmering golden eyes, a stunningly beautiful, sculpted face… and long, pointed ears.
Though similar, it was clear to everyone that she was not human.
“My name is Eve.”
The elf, Eve, looked at the humans, including Oh Chan-woo, with a grumpy expression.
The reason Eve was dispatched to this game instead of Riena was simply that Riena was too busy with the establishment and expansion of the order. Upon learning this, Jun-young had decided to place Eve into this Fallen World in Riena’s stead.
‘Since the survivors also use guns.’
The fact that it was Eve was simple enough that she would be horrified to know.
“Is she saying that the lady sent you in Riena’s place?”
“Yes, that’s correct. I will perform the same mission as Riena, so there’s no need to worry too much. Also, I’ve come with some understanding of what this place is and what the mission entails.”
Oh Chan-woo could speak first upon seeing the elf before him because he had spent the most time with Riena.
The others, however, remained frozen, alternating their gazes between her ears and face.
‘Still a bit insecure with the kin, but it can’t be helped. If it’s her orders.’
Eve, who had gotten somewhat used to carrying out missions in the game world, remained unfazed by meeting new people in a new realm.
Jun-young’s presence had grown substantial for her, proving how important that order was.
The elves continued to be acknowledged for their skills, entering the hyper FPS game Hyper Field as heroes, but the warrior recognized by Jun-young, Eve, had been placed here.
“Then does that mean Riena won’t be coming?”
“I don’t know either. It depends on her will. What, do you find me untrustworthy?”
Eve furrowed her brows at Oh Chan-woo’s words searching for Riena. It was true that she was weaker than Riena, but Eve had awakened a new power and grown strong, now being a warrior worthy of being called the strongest of the Elf Tribe.
“D-don’t get me wrong. I was just surprised. No matter what happens, I can adapt.”
Seeing her face, Oh Chan-woo hurriedly waved his hands.
Meeting Riena was, after all, nonsensical and physically impossible.
The survivors decided to simply accept this situation rather than understanding or comprehending it, finding Eve fascinating yet accepting her naturally.
“This is Exploration Team 1-2! A-a special zombie! It looks like Gigantis! It’s heading towards the facility now!”
At that moment, an urgent transmission rang out. Those who had gone outside in search of resources and survivors were frantically sending out a request for support.
‘Gigantis!’
The survivors shuddered upon hearing the radio message. Gigantis was an exceptionally large and sturdy variant.
It was a special zombie they couldn’t catch with their firepower.
“Eve, right now we…”
“I know. It seems a crisis is approaching.”
Eve smiled subtly and nodded at Oh Chan-woo’s urgent words. The first of the missions she heard from Riena was to hunt down special enemies threatening the local residents.
“Let’s go together.”
Opening the shop window to summon her weapons, Eve requested guidance. She intended to showcase her strength while shaking off the doubts the survivors held about her.
“???”
The survivors were astonished when she summoned a weapon seemingly familiar to the air, expecting something extraordinary like a massive bow.
‘An elf with a gun?!’
Others might not know, but the people here had a kind of prejudice against elves, believing they only existed in creative works.
“The creature we call Gigantis is a very powerful special zombie that stands at least over 5 meters tall. It’s hard to even inflict damage on its huge, sturdy body with ordinary bullets. The only way to deal with it was to distract and lure it into another area.”
“There’s nothing to worry about. While it looks similar, my weapon is different from yours. It will surely inflict damage on it.”
Eve was equally fascinated by the guns the survivors held. However, she quickly realized that the guns they possessed merely borrowed the power of gunpowder and did not contain any special powers.
“Over there! It’s them!”
Soon, they spotted a horde of zombies charging towards them from afar in the vehicle they were riding. The number of zombies running down the road they cleared was in dozens, but among them, one giant was thumping along.
With a muscular physique that appeared sturdy and agile, parts of its body revealed bones and bulging, tentacle-like flesh due to atrocious mutations.
“It resembles the mutated Black Monsters. I wonder if it’s as strong as them.”
Realizing that it resembled the evolving Bugs, Eve sighed and stood up. She climbed atop the moving vehicle through the sunroof.
The bewildered survivors slowed down, worried about her, but she was the one who shot guns even while on horseback. While taking a shooting stance on the moving vehicle, Eve aimed her sniper rifle at the enemy without any tremors.
“Reverse! Reverse!!”
Soon, the vehicle hastily turned around and began retreating back towards the facility, appearing to be chased by zombies.
In that state, Eve calmly began firing bullets. The special bullets infused with blue mana were like beams of light, shattering and piercing the enemy’s body.
‘No way.’
It was a different kind of strength from the divine sword Riena had shown her. Every time the mana burst forth, the bullets pierced the enemy’s tough body with incredible force.
As the enemy that had boldly charged met with shredded flesh and blood splattering around.
“Is it all just a tough body? It’s nothing special.”
Ultimately, Eve relentlessly targeted the enemy’s head and limbs, making each shot hit its mark and taking them down. The enemy’s head exploded and its limbs fell off as it crumpled to the ground with a thud.
The special zombie Gigantis couldn’t even swing its ferocious fists once.
“We need to collect samples from that body. That’s how we can create the vaccine.”
“Everyone, grab your weapons!”
At that moment, the survivors attempted to counterattack. Each of them brought down their guns, ready to fight off the remaining zombies, while getting what they needed from the enemy’s corpse.
“Not so hard, huh?”
Eve changed her weapon. Holding an assault rifle with a drum magazine instead of her sniper rifle, she stepped forward alongside the others, raining bullets down on the charging zombies.
“I understand now why you came personally. You’re incredibly strong, just like Riena.”
“It’s thanks to the experience of fighting creatures worse than those monsters. Even thinking back to that time, I feel I’m still lacking.”
“What on earth… is out there in the world?”
After returning to the village, while others were tidying up, Oh Chan-woo conversed with Eve. Her words piqued his interest in the outside world.
The ‘outside world’ he spoke of referred to the very place where Riena and Eve came from. He had already realized that they were beings from another world.
“That place is simply another world. No different from here. It’s just about how and where one lives.”
“But isn’t ‘that person’ there too? The real god.”
As Eve, who had experienced several worlds, spoke based on her experiences, Oh Chan-woo threw a more fundamental question.
At the mention of that person, Eve wore a faint smile. Information about Jun-young was gradually spreading, even in this completely different world like her hometown.
“This world is also under the watch of that person. If that person didn’t care, would we have ever met?”
“Then… can I meet that person too?”
“I don’t know that either. For now, it seems it’s best to stabilize what we’re doing.”
Eve looked around. The survivor village, made possible by Jun-young’s extensive support of actively investing in key figures under her command, still had many shortcomings.
To live self-sufficiently, it needed to grow larger and have more people than now.
“If it weren’t for that person’s help, we would have been hiding away in a corner, starving to death. I want to repay that kindness.”
“The best way is to do your job while firmly holding your place. Regardless of the tribe or society, what’s most important is living steadily while keeping the basics. If you live that way, surely that person will use you when the time comes. I learned that from Riena herself. By the way, this is really delicious.”
Eve chuckled at his honest statement and continued to devour the instant noodles she had.
Processed food was relatively scarce, but seeing her enjoy it so much made Oh Chan-woo bring her more instant noodles as if enchanted.
The instant noodles that Eve took and spread among the elves sparked a similar food-making craze among them, which was perhaps destined to happen due to their interdependent characteristics.
