Chapter 52

Chapter 052 A Wave of Zombies

He finally understood the game tricks that Xia Xinyan mentioned earlier.

As they approached the end of the dungeon, the game really was doing everything it could to force them to complete it…

Well, perhaps that aligns with the trend of dungeons becoming increasingly difficult in the later stages.

The building was surrounded by glass curtain walls, allowing an unobstructed view of the outside; except for the skybridge several floors above, everyone could now see the dense swarm of infected individuals pouring in from every corner of the city below.

It was as if all the infected in the city had gathered here—no, you could just drop the “as if.” The sight of the dark crowd nearly filling every corner could not be described with words; the shock and pressure it delivered was beyond anything language could express.

Even though they were still on the 40th floor, Wang Wen and Cheng Yong didn’t hesitate and turned to run upstairs: “Damn! Let’s get moving!”

Murong Yue immediately turned to follow them, while the fat guy instinctively wanted to keep up, but he noticed Ling Mo and Xia Xinyan still standing by the glass wall, looking at something: “Aren’t we going?”

Xia Xinyan squinted at the sky: “The game says the helicopter is coming, shouldn’t we take this chance to figure out which building is the target?”

The fat guy paused: “…Good point.”

While Xia Xinyan was focused on observing the sky, Ling Mo was using his peripheral vision to take in her figure.

It wasn’t really significant, but ever since that moment in the sewer, he had mostly shifted his thoughts away from the game.

To be honest, the more he observed Xia Xinyan now, the more attracted he became to her.

It was as if she had a certain charm from the start, drawing his attention, and he couldn’t help but fall further and further into it.

And he was increasingly aware that she was truly exceptional.

Delicate in thought, gentle in personality, and so kind to him.

He had reason to suspect he must have saved the world in his past life.

“I see it—over that building.” Xia Xinyan suddenly raised her hand, pointing to a tall structure across, then picked up her gun and headed for the stairs, “Let’s go!”

Ling Mo immediately shook off his chaotic thoughts and followed her. The fat guy tried to keep up but stumbled after just two steps.

Noticing his movement, Ling Mo turned to look at him: “You alright?”

“Ugh…” The fat guy held his head, crouching for two seconds, then slowly stood up, “I don’t think I can last much longer… damn.”

Ling Mo frowned slightly: “Are you losing control?”

“I can still control it,” The fat guy rubbed his arms, “Just feeling like my body is heating up, almost like I popped a Viagra—stop talking, let’s hurry, I should be able to hold out until we get on the helicopter, any delay and I’m done for.”

Ling Mo scrutinized him.

Upon closer inspection, he noticed the fat guy’s skin was indeed redder than before.

He wiped his face and ran towards the stairs: “Just keep an eye on yourself.”

The fat guy gritted his teeth and silently followed them.

The three in front moved quickly, soon leaving Xia Xinyan and her group behind. Perhaps they were doing it on purpose since the fat guy was a wild card; if something went wrong while boarding the helicopter, it would be a real loss.

Xia Xinyan didn’t mind, even if the fat guy truly lost his mind, she had ways to manage him as long as they could board the helicopter.

The skybridge was on the 45th floor, and they were taking the more spacious main staircase, which was beneficial for responding flexibly to situations; however, the drawback was that every floor they ascended attracted all the infected in the office hall.

It was at this moment they realized what Wang Wen meant by “a lot of infected”—each floor had at least fifty or sixty of them. Don’t ask how Ling Mo knew; the crowd of infected crammed together felt just like a high school classroom when he had over seventy students.

And that was not counting those he hadn’t seen.

Fortunately, with Wang Wen and the others clearing the path in front, they could vaguely hear explosions coming from above. Xia Xinyan’s group thus enjoyed some benefits; the danger at the back was considerably lower, and they made their way up smoothly…

—That thought came to a halt when they reached the 45th floor.

“Run—!!”

As soon as Xia Xinyan and her group arrived, they saw Wang Wen and the others desperately fleeing from the skybridge: “There’s a huge wave of zombies!!!”

Without needing to be told, Ling Mo caught sight of them as well. Exiting the main staircase positioned them centrally in the building from where they could see the ends of three skybridges—each packed with infected pouring towards them, nearly filling the entire passage.

Xia Xinyan immediately made a decision: “Keep going up!”

In this situation, there was no chance to reach Building A; heading directly for the rooftop of this building might still hold a glimmer of hope for survival.

The others shared the same thought, and after being forced to regroup, they all dashed upward.

Murong Yue’s expression was quite pained: “Why are there so many of them chasing us?! Are they that fast?!”

“There were many infected in the other three buildings, but I didn’t expect they’d come after us this quickly!” Wang Wen panted while removing his bomb-filled backpack, “I was planning to set some traps, damn it!”

“Then why didn’t this building come?” The fat guy gritted his teeth, struggling to keep up, gasping for air as he asked.

“Because I blew this building up!” Wang Wen shot him a glance, “I told you before! I used four bombs!”

Murong Yue immediately added: “Aren’t you about to collapse? You look like you’re losing consciousness—do you want me to help you?”

“Shut up! Just run your own path!”

The fat guy was indeed reaching his limit.

He could feel his body gradually slipping out of control, as if he was suffering from 300+ latency, even his thoughts lagged.

But he was annoyed—why did this have to happen at the last moment? Wasn’t this messing with his mentality?

So he decided to go for broke.

Screw the teammates—this was just a game.

The path to the rooftop was quite clear, but the deafening roar of countless pursuers gathering behind also brought them significant pressure.

Fortunately, the rooftop door wasn’t locked, and after bursting through the exit, Wang Wen immediately tossed a bomb at the entrance: “Get back!! I’m blowing this door up!!”

Xia Xinyan, upon reaching the rooftop, quickly assessed the surroundings. The space was vast, with a five to six meter tall signal tower above the rooftop entrance, and right in the middle stood a twenty-meter-high lightning rod tower—an exaggerated structure one would definitely not see in reality.

Not far on another building hovered a helicopter, completely ignoring the rooftop situation, showing no intent to come for a rescue.

That’s just the standard game trope, where players seek help, while the rescue never actively looks for players.

In this game setting, it was a completely malicious design.

However, having played for so long, Xia Xinyan quickly thought of a solution—

Find the right angle to blow up the lightning rod tower, letting it fall towards another building to act as a makeshift bridge. If calculations were correct, the distance was definitely sufficient—otherwise they wouldn’t have built such a high lightning rod tower.

But before she could implement her plan, a sudden explosion dragged her into a grave.

As countless infected surged in, Wang Wen didn’t have time to properly set the bombs; he was just a beat slower and got knocked down by a self-destructing infected. In a panic, he directly pressed the controller, triggering the bomb that had just activated.

Then, that bomb took out a multitude of infected and a group of players who hadn’t managed to escape.

It also destroyed the base of the signal tower.

Coincidentally, the direction the signal tower fell was straight towards the lightning rod tower, directly smashing and severing half of its steel structure, causing it to lose support, and with a piercing scream, it began to slowly collapse.

Instantly, the entire rooftop plunged into chaos.
