Chapter 9

Episode 9: The Woman in the Robe

After miraculously fending off three thugs, Shion, having thoroughly indulged in some self-admiration, approached the woman and spoke to her.

“Are you okay?”

“Of course I’m okay! Even without your help, I could’ve handled those guys on my own!”

Shion spoke to the woman, who had likely just experienced one of the most terrifying and despairing moments of her life, in a deliberately gentle tone.

But completely disregarding his concern, the woman, who had been trembling in fear and unable to speak just moments ago, responded with remarkable bravery.

“O-oh, I see…”

“Actually, why do you look so smug? All you did was pull out your sword and scare them off—you didn’t even do anything! It makes no sense!”

“Uh… oh…”

She had a point.

Shion was pretty deflated by the woman’s sharp observation, but he kept it off his face and replied,

“…Well, if you’re that energetic, you seem fine. I’ll be going now. Be careful walking alone at night from now on.”

“Wait a minute! Leaving a delicate lady like me here? Are you out of your mind? Are you even a man?!”

Despite having just declared that she could’ve handled the attackers on her own, she now referred to herself as a “delicate lady.”

“…What do you want from me?”

“Very specially, and I mean *very* specially, you are to escort me to the town market! You should be grateful!”

“…What an honor.”

Despite having been paralyzed with fear just moments ago, desperately wishing for someone to save her, and still trembling from the lingering terror, the woman displayed an impressive boldness toward the person who had rescued her from that dire situation.

“(So, she wants me to walk her to town…)” Shion thought, placing a hand on his hip in exasperation as he agreed to her request. But in truth, he didn’t feel the slightest bit annoyed.

The woman in front of him was acting as if the earlier incident had been nothing at all.

But as she herself had said, a delicate woman like her couldn’t possibly be fine after such an ordeal.

If things had gone wrong, it could’ve left her with lifelong trauma. She might never have been able to face people again.

If things had gone wrong, she might have suffered from an unhealable wound in her heart, and it wouldn’t be far-fetched to think she might have even taken her own life.

Imagining all of that wasn’t difficult.

And so, he had no objections to escorting her to town to reassure her and ensure her safety.

If he was the only one who could help the person in trouble before him, he would do so without a second thought for himself. To him, that was the most natural decision.

It was the unwavering sense of justice, conscience, and conviction that lay at the core of Shion Kurosaki.

“…Alright, let’s go. I’ll take you to town.”

“Are you serious? Can’t you see me? I can’t even stand up because my legs are still weak! Think before you speak! Honestly, you’re such a clueless man. Just stand there with that dumb look on your face until I can get up!”

“(…Maybe I should just leave now.)”

For a moment, the conviction that had surely existed within Shion Kurosaki wavered.

In front of upper-class students who torment the weak, in the presence of a princess being chased by assassins, and facing the world’s strongest dragon attacking the academy… What if, in such dire situations, a magic student who only pretends to be concealing his true abilities, who in reality possesses only C-rank strength, appears? This is the story of a C-rank magic student, who indulges in the illusion of having hidden powers, acting as if he has more strength than he truly does.
