Chapter 88

Kyle, who was patrolling the village on Raul’s orders, cursed under his breath. He could understand being sent to patrol in case something happened, but the girl clinging to his side was completely unexpected.

“So, did Oppa really kill that giant beast back then?”

Unable to hold back his rising anger at Rizel’s annoying questions, Kyle shouted.

“Yes. Yes. YES!!!! He smashed the head of that beast the size of a small town with a staff!!! I’ve told you 50 times already, damn it!!!”

Kyle had just encountered a disaster comparable to that horrific battlefield. The constant repetition of her brother’s story was so irritating that he felt like pulling his hair out.

Honestly, he wanted to say, “If you’re going to act like this, why pretend to be a good little sister now?” But if Rizel started crying, Raul would definitely blow him to pieces.

“I’d rather die than deal with this, damn it. If only he hadn’t taken me in.”

“But what did you do before Oppa took you in?”

“Nothing special. Just what any poor farmer’s son would do. Then dragons attacked our village, killed everyone, and I became a thief…”

The story of how he tried to pickpocket Raul and his friends and got beaten to a pulp was no secret anymore.

Then Raul recognized his talent and took him in, teaching him all sorts of skills and martial arts, allowing him to reach his current position.

“There’s not much of an age difference… but he’s like a real father to me.”

“So, are you my nephew?”

“… I almost seriously punched you just now.”

“If you did, I’d tell Oppa.”

“Damn blood relations. I should curse that blood even if I have to go to hell. Seriously, the Berze family has no redeeming qualities…”

Just then, Kyle spotted a carriage heading down the hill and made a genuinely disgusted face.

The carriage heading toward the village bore the Berze family crest.

“Ah, damn it, the annoying ones are coming.”

“That’s Mother’s carriage…”

“Miss, please wait here for a moment.”

“Hey, wait!”

Kyle threw the staff he was holding, stopping the carriage.

Then he jumped down the 10-meter hill and locked eyes with Latri’s coachman.

Kyle knew that coachman well. Most of Latri’s personal servants ignored Raul, so it was no surprise.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa. This isn’t your front yard, why are you trying to barge in?”

“Do you know whose carriage this is?!”

“I know, that’s why I stopped it. I don’t usually do this. But I can’t stand seeing a dung-filled cart entering my superior’s residence.”

The coachman immediately reached for his sword.

“You insolent thief…!”

“Let me warn you, if you draw that, you’ll die by my hand. I have the skills to make you bleed under the guise of self-defense. Ah, forget it, I’ll just kill you.”

As Kyle swung his staff, the coachman and even the horses were terrified.

As the situation grew more serious, a cold voice like dawn broke through.

“Enough. I’ll handle this, don’t waste your life.”

The woman who stepped out of the carriage was stunningly beautiful.

She looked so young, it was hard to believe she had grown children, almost like a girl in her late teens.

Though petite, her dignity was so overwhelming that even Kyle felt pressured.

Latri Berze, the mother of Raul and Rizel, once considered the strongest knight in the Empire.

“But, Madam…”

“Wow. If someone saw this, they’d think the coachman’s mom… no, mother was here. The coachman’s life is precious, but the son’s life is worth nothing, huh?”

As Kyle taunted, Rizel, who had hurried down the hill, covered her mouth.

“You crazy bastard! How dare you talk to our mother like that…!”

“If I get beaten to death by Raul for this, so be it. Even if I die, I’ll say what needs to be said. Hey, lady. Why are we being so ugly? Don’t you feel ashamed dragging out a broken relationship? Oh, right, you have no conscience. I’m talking music to a deaf person!”

“……”

Latri looked uncomfortable, but Kyle didn’t care. Raul had taught him to speak with dignity, but unfortunately, the others had taught him how to curse and provoke.

“Language is the mirror of one’s soul. But such vulgar words… I didn’t expect to see such a lack of education and refinement so clearly.”

“Then are you admitting you’re a terrible mother?”

“Don’t wag your tongue so carelessly. One mistake could cost you your head.”

“Considering how much you’ve failed your son, it doesn’t seem like you’d do that.”

“That such a vulgar man holds a key position in the military… the Empire’s standards have fallen. How lamentable.”

“And you have no standards.”

Even a demon would be shocked by such blatant insults, but Latri’s expression didn’t change.

Neither Raul nor Rizel had ever seen their mother’s expression change.

With a face as cold as Arctic water, she retorted.

“Even vicious dragons have their merits. They devoured your clearly inferior family, making the Empire a bit cleaner.”

“…”

Unable to contain his anger, Kyle swung his staff, and Latri swung her sword, aiming for his neck.

Their weapons clashed, creating an ear-splitting noise.

“Getting angry after provoking someone else’s family. Don’t you think that’s funny?”

“I insulted you. I never insulted your family. And you were aiming for my neck from the start?”

“You brought up my husband’s death. As his wife, it’s my duty to take your head.”

“What a great wife you are. And the worst mother. Whatever, it doesn’t matter… considering what you’ve done to my superior…”

Kyle, stepping back, glared at Latri, gripping his staff.

“You won’t be leaving here in one piece today.”

“There’s nothing uglier than speaking of things you can’t accomplish.”

Kyle charged to break Latri’s arm, and Latri prepared to strike his neck.

As their weapons swung, a blue spear deflected Kyle’s staff, and a black shoe stomped Latri’s sword into the ground.

“Ha, this village is always in chaos. Do I have to step in every time?”

“… Long time no see, Countess.”

The two who had flown in at the commotion looked quite uncomfortable.

“I wish we could have one quiet day, but that seems impossible.”

“… On that, we agree, Camilla. I detest chaos, no matter who causes it.”

Kyle immediately dropped his weapon and bowed.

“I apologize for unintentionally causing a disturbance. Also, my earlier remarks…”

“I’m not here to blame you. You didn’t touch her honor, and you weren’t the main cause of the disturbance. The main cause was…”

Raul looked at Latri with dry eyes.

Latri’s cold, Arctic-like eyes met Raul’s desert-dry eyes, creating a storm of tension.

Who would think these two were related? Probably not even themselves. Not anymore.

“Are you blaming me now?”

“… Still as wise as ever.”

“My vulgar subordinate used your husband’s death as a weapon in an argument. Yet you turn the blame on me?”

“I didn’t turn it. The arrow’s trajectory is straight.”

“… You’ve changed a lot.”

“Have you ever seen me? It’s foolish to speak of changes in something you’ve never observed.”

Considering Raul’s usual tone, this was an incredibly sharp rebuke.

“Dare you lecture me?”

“Strange. The word ‘dare’ implies a specific relationship or condition. Does such a thing exist between us?”

“…… Your tone hasn’t changed.”

“Neither has your gaze, Countess. It was the same when I fell ill, when I was injured in a carriage accident, when I almost died to an assassin. Always those eyes.”

“I gave you medicine for your illness. I shielded you during the accident. I killed the assassin who tried to kill you. Isn’t it thanks to me that you’re alive?”

“… It seems you have no intention of understanding my words.”

Raul sighed, clearly fed up.

“Had I not recovered from my illness, had I been more severely injured, had that assassin stabbed me that day.”

Raul bit his lower lip.

“I wouldn’t have had to see you today. What a pity.”

“What…?”

“Truly a miserable feeling. Just standing face-to-face with you like this.”

Latri seemed slightly shocked, her brow twitching.

Then, regaining her composure, she spoke in a cold voice.

“We need to talk.”

“… I have nothing to say to you.”

But Latri didn’t back down, and realizing the situation was at a standstill, Raul sighed.

“Follow me. For the sake of the lingering affection at the bottom, I’ll grant you one last conversation.”

The Terminally-Ill Lord Desires Hospice Care

Status: Completed

I am a mediocre person.

As a lord, as a knight, as a family member, let alone as a human being.

Therefore, I wanted to let go of everything that was too much for me and abruptly leave.

No one would want to stop me, nor could they.

I just wanted to breathe easily in a quiet place and disappear like that.
