Chapter 839: The Unawakened Witch
After two rounds of battle, Lan Li’er faced off against Meilu and Pandora’s combination, with Lingxin serving as the referee this time.
Both sides became more proficient after playing several rounds, starting to strategically arrange their forces on the table, engaging in a back-and-forth struggle for dominance.
“Activating the spell card ‘Whispers of the Underworld,’ any creature with less than 3 life points on the opponent’s field dies instantly and transforms into a skeleton with 1 attack and 1 health point on our side. Then, I use the creature card ‘Black Sorcerer of the Mercury Era’ to turn our skeletons into ‘Black Iron Zombies’ with 2/3 stats.” (Attack 2, Health 3)
Meilu, following Pandora’s thoughts, played a silver-bordered card depicting a wizard clad in tattered black robes and a hood, only revealing his lower face with a wicked smile. He aimed his staff at a skeleton rising from the ground, and the skeleton’s lower body began to be covered by a dark substance.
On Lan Li’er’s side, besides a single “White Tower Mage Swordsman” with 3/4 stats, there were no other creatures. Pandora’s side had three “Black Iron Zombies” with 2/3 stats, one “Black Sorcerer of the Mercury Era” with 4/3 stats, and a “Resurrected Bone Elephant” with 4/1 stats, though its original stats were 4/5 before losing 4 health points due to battle.
“Now Lan Li’er is in trouble, hahaha,” Ye Ling said happily while sitting aside, hugging the chubby Dai Ju and rubbing her, causing her to protest loudly.
“If she doesn’t clear the field, Lan Li’er will be in danger next round,” Loran Hill glanced at the scoreboard. Currently, Lan Li’er only had 6 health points, which was not safe.
“It’s hard to say,” looking at the scene, Lan Li’er laughed and then took out a card she had been holding for a long time.
“I play the ‘War Golem of the Guard City’ card, dealing 3 damage to all enemy creatures when it enters the field.” She then played a creature card depicting a massive golem with distinct Rou’erna style, standing behind the city wall, firing powerful shots at the charging iron cavalry outside.
“Hmph, even such a cumbersome card,” Ye Ling commented grumpily, seeing Lan Li’er successfully clear the field. Although the golem was powerful, it required 8 mana, generally needing to wait until the later stages of the game to use.
“But it is indeed very useful. During the ‘Battle of Broken Bows,’ such golems greatly hindered the Empire’s offensive,” Loran Hill recalled the historical records she had seen in the academy.
On the other side of the field, Meilu and Pandora did not seem surprised. Meilu touched Pandora’s head in surprise and then placed her last remaining card.
“Spell card ‘Prosperous Era of the Mercury Dynasty,’ when the total number of creatures in both graveyards exceeds 50, summon the three great witches of doom and activate their entry effects.” She played a dazzling card, showing a sky filled with dark clouds and lightning, with three tiny figures descending from the magnificent sky. Below them was scorched earth, burning giant trees, collapsed palaces, and mountains of corpses and bones.
“These three witches are ‘Witch of the Hades Soul,’ ‘Cruel Deprivation Witch,’ and ‘Fiery Annihilation Witch.’ Among them, the Witch of the Hades Soul randomly summons the three most expensive creatures from the graveyard, allowing them to attack this turn. The Cruel Deprivation Witch makes all enemy creatures lose all abilities and effects, and they cannot attack or move until the next turn. The Fiery Annihilation Witch deals 10 points of unavoidable true damage to all enemy creatures and the main combatant.”
“In that case, Lan Li’er has lost,” Lingxin announced.
“Wow, she actually brought this card,” seeing the result, Lan Li’er pouted on the table, frustrated. This card was powerful but rarely used because the conditions for activation were too stringent. Only the Necromancer Sequence would bring such cards due to having many creatures in the graveyard.
“Careless, if I had taken the risk earlier, I would have played Dorothy first,” she reflected afterward. Perhaps this was her only chance to turn things around.
“Unexpectedly, Pandora is so strong, even though she is still quite young,” Lan Li’er lifted her head after a moment and looked at the timid little girl across from her.
While usually shy, during the card game, she seemed to have divine luck, always drawing key cards and predicting the upcoming scenes.
“Now it’s just Lacy who hasn’t joined yet. Shall we try with Pandora?” Lan Li’er suddenly suggested to the girl flipping through the cards nearby.
If Lacy also lost, it would prove it wasn’t because she was weak, but because Pandora was truly exceptional.
Lan Li’er harbored an ulterior motive, encouraging the quiet girl to join the game.
“I’m not very familiar with these cards, I might not play well,” Loran Hill stated that she hadn’t even finished reading the instructions on the cards and was a first-timer today, making it difficult to perform well.
“Don’t worry, just give it a try,” Lan Li’er’s eyes sparkled, urging Loran Hill again.
“Well then, okay,” she thought, it was just a game after all, not much to worry about winning or losing.
Afterward, she looked through the cards and prepared a deck, sitting down at the battle position.
“Hehe, the final match today starts now, with me as the referee. The contestants are Lacy and Pandora.”
Pandora still used the Necromancer Sequence deck, while Loran Hill used a rare Angel Sequence deck this time. Cards from the Angel Sequence were mostly less offensive and rarely used.
At the start of the battle, both sides summoned small creatures in the low-mana phase.
“Using the perpetual spell card ‘The Primordial Flame,’ which accelerates rituals by one turn when active,” Loran Hill laid down a yellowish ancient bronze card, with a black stone pillar bearing a book inscribed with flames.
“Using ‘Funeral of Mercury’ to send cards from hand to the graveyard, then draw an equal number of cards,” for a moment, neither side had any creatures on the field.
Next turn.
“Using the spell card ‘Ritual of Angelic Descent,’ summon the ‘Great Angel of Sacred Flame’ after three turns, but due to the effect of ‘The Primordial Flame,’ it becomes effective after two turns,” Loran Hill then laid down a silver card depicting a splendid church interior, with white-robed priests praying towards the center, emitting white light, and a shadow of an angel gradually appearing.
“Using the spell card ‘Trembling Skeleton Storm,’ summon five 1/1 skeletons onto the field,” Meilu and Pandora played a card adorned with countless graves and bones.
“Using the creature card ‘High Priest of the Sanctuary,’ any enemy creature that dies in combat with it is purified and excluded directly,” Loran Hill laid down a targeted card, depicting the High Priest of the Sanctuary, one of the twelve palaces of the Holy Land, dressed in white and gold robes, with two standing priests holding staffs behind him.
“Lacy’s High Priest has a protective effect, you must defeat it before attacking the main combatant,” Lan Li’er blinked and explained to those beside her.
“Poor little Pandora,” Lingxin sighed.
In the subsequent rounds, Pandora continuously attempted to pile up the graveyard and control the field, but Loran Hill steadily resolved each situation, purifying enemy creatures and preventing them from entering the graveyard while maintaining high health.
“Huh, it’s already the twelfth round, feels like this game will drag on for a while,” Lan Li’er remarked, feeling a bit hungry.
“Lacy will definitely win,” Ye Ling naturally believed in Loran Hill.
“This turn, using ‘Book of Enlightenment’ to draw two cards, then using ‘Ritual of Angelic Descent’ again,” Loran Hill continued her turn methodically, seemingly unconcerned about defeating the opponent quickly.
Across from her, Pandora struggled visibly, her actions becoming hesitant and uncertain compared to before.
In Pandora’s eyes, this seemingly tranquil older sister stood like an insurmountable mountain range, exuding overwhelming pressure that made her previous invincible feeling shrink and become ineffective.
Oh, can’t win?
Pandora lowered her head, then looked at a new card drawn by her mother, a magnificent card depicting a witch with black hair and purple dress, familiar and comforting.
There was no choice but to try. She extended her tender fingers toward the card.
“This one? Yes, seems there’s no other way,” Meilu murmured.
“Using ‘Hades Soul Witch,’ summon three creatures from the graveyard, attack the opponent’s ‘White Armor Knight of the Sword Palace,’ then attack the main combatant,” she played the unique witch card, breaking through the knight’s defense, then attacked Loran Hill, reducing her life to 8 points.
“In that case, use this, the spell card ‘Seal of the Great Whirlpool,’ which prevents all creatures from attacking for one turn when active,” Loran Hill laid down a platinum-framed card, with a large swirling vortex surrounded by various sages on different peaks, casting spells amidst the storm, forming a golden array above, slowly covering the vortex.
“Then we can only increase the creatures on the field. Using the creature card ‘War Beast of Ethereal Flames,’ dealing 5 damage to the opponent’s main combatant upon entry,” Meilu and Pandora played another card, leaving Loran Hill with only 3 health points.
“The decisive round will come next,” Lan Li’er observed the situation.
“Feels like Lacy is in danger,” Lingxin shared her thoughts, since Loran Hill hadn’t attacked yet, and Pandora still had full health.
“Oh,” Loran Hill looked at the new card she had drawn and examined the battlefield.
“My turn ends, ‘Ritual of Angelic Descent’ concludes, ‘Great Angel of Sacred Flame’ enters the field, restoring 3 health points. Then using this spell card ‘Sevenfold Chord of Angels,’ after completing seven ‘Rituals of Angelic Descent,’ summon the three Archangels of Salvation,” the card depicted a layer of clouds breaking, with brilliant sunlight illuminating the land, countless white wings piercing through the clouds, and at the center, the most glorious and intense were the three Archangels.
“They are ‘Archangel of Purifying Red Flame,’ ‘Archangel of Cleansing Purity,’ and ‘Archangel of Compassionate Healing.’ When ‘Archangel of Purifying Red Flame’ enters, all enemy creatures are purified and destroyed. When ‘Archangel of Cleansing Purity’ enters, all allied creatures gain +5/+5 stats and immunity to destruction effects. When ‘Archangel of Compassionate Healing’ enters, all allied creatures and the main combatant restore full health,”
With this, Loran Hill’s field stood a row of creatures with over 10 attack and health points.
“Huh, Lacy is really strong now. But she had patience, waiting until the seven ‘Rituals of Angelic Descent’ were completed. This spell card, the deck can carry at most three, the others need to be acquired and copied through special methods during the battle,” Lan Li’er briefly commented.
Meilu stroked Pandora gently and whispered softly.
“We’ve lost,”
“Yes,” Pandora nodded, she had anticipated this from the beginning, although initially uncomfortable, she now felt a sense of relief.
This big sister was special and different.
She vaguely sensed that no matter how many times they battled, she would still lose. It wasn’t about her deck composition or skills, but a premonition of fate.
As long as the big sister used cards related to the Angel Sequence, there was a sense of destiny, as if she was born to use such cards, giving them a sacred aura. Even during battles, Pandora could faintly see stars.
As the people in the room discussed the previous battle, Feng Na finally returned to the room.
“Excuse me, lunch is ready. Let’s all go eat, I bet everyone is hungry,” the girl with light red hair entered the room, momentarily interrupting the ongoing discussion.
“Geez, Feng Na, finally food? I’m starving,” Lan Li’er jumped up excitedly and hugged Feng Na.
The group then chatted and walked towards the dining hall. Upon arrival, the long table was already filled with delicious dishes: roasted suckling pig, steaming soup, steamed red crabs, grilled meat with a golden hue and fragrance, fresh fruits, and more.
“What a feast,” Lingxin whispered in awe.
“Rarely do we all gather together, so I asked Pan Ni to prepare extra,” Feng Na pulled a maid in black and white, who naturally was Pan Ni, the maid who had grown up with her. They were more like inseparable friends rather than master and servant.
Pan Ni still took care of Feng Na’s daily needs, maintaining the facade of a master-servant relationship.
“Thank you, Pan Ni,” everyone thanked her, then sat down together to begin the meal.
During the conversation, they talked about past events. Despite over a decade passing, their appearances had changed differently.
Meilu had changed the most; the once young girl had become a mature woman. Next was Pan Ni, the little maid who had grown more capable and taller. Then came Feng Na, Lan Li’er, and Lingxin. Though over a decade had passed, their appearances hadn’t changed much, still looking like young women in their early twenties. This was thanks to the anti-aging effects of the Extraordinary Sequence. Perhaps in another twenty years, they would show some changes.
As for Ye Ling, except for the small dragon horns on her head and occasionally spreading her wings, she hadn’t changed much.
Finally, Loran Hill remained frozen in time, still a serene girl around seventeen years old, quietly sitting at the table, savoring the new flavors.
“It tastes great,” the girl sincerely praised, the taste buds in her mouth bringing delightful sensations.
After finishing lunch, Loran Hill slowly reflected on and confirmed where the special feeling she had when seeing Pandora originated.
Just like when Lagetis first saw Dorothy, there was a vague familiarity and warmth.
This child is indeed an unawakened witch.
