Chapter 78

Alright. To every race, there’s something called a ‘mutant.’ A mutant—an organism that exhibits new traits not found in its lineage and passes them on genetically. There are cases where they have an extra arm compared to others of the same species or possess additional body parts from birth.

Or, there could be issues with intellectual abilities—whether exceptionally higher or lower. Mostly, it’s the latter. Mutants exist in every race: humans, elves, dragons, demons, dwarves, and naturally, even ‘monsters’ have them. Monsters are living beings too, just more savage and violent than others.

And right here… across the continent and the Demon Realm, there’s a mutant of a peculiar race considered the most ‘inferior’ of all.

Squeak—

“Chirp, what’re you doing?”

“Chirp, chirp.”

Surrounded by a shredded wild boar, goblins were tearing into it with dirty hands. Their skin was a darker green than nature’s pale hue, and their necks were bent forward like turtles.

Goblins. Though born with decent strength and agility, their severely lacking intelligence and desire-ridden minds place them at the bottom among all monsters. They generally live in groups and are adept in the shadows of mountains and toxins. Deep greed and lust for females define their hearts.

A single goblin’s power is laughably weak—physically akin to a thirteen-year-old human, untrained, with a protruding belly. If not for their group lifestyle, the goblin race would’ve surely gone extinct long ago.

Of course, the goblins themselves didn’t realize their inferiority. The absence of such awareness hindered their progress…

“Chirp.”

“Chirp?”

“Idiot, moron, fool. Chirp.”

“Chirp!? Did you just insult me!?”

“That’s praise.”

“…Praise? Chirp! I feel good! The wild boar tastes great!”

‘To call you guys idiots is an insult wasted. Morons.’

There was one goblin slightly taller than the rest. His neck stood upright like a human’s, with clearly defined abs showing off his bulging muscles beneath his green skin.

While all other goblins feasted on the hunted wild boar, this lone goblin focused on training his body—push-ups, sit-ups, and the like—all while lying flat on the ground.

The other goblins eyed this mutant’s behavior with suspicion but didn’t bother stopping him. The weaker he got, the more food for them. They merely thought of him as an oddball.

‘You fools. You’ve seen humans in the forest cooking meat over fire, so why eat it raw? It’s tougher and less tasty.’

Sweating profusely, the mutant glanced disdainfully at his kin.

Goblins’ teeth, sharper than humans’, aren’t quite on par with those of fierce beasts. Some goblins cried out in pain when trying to tear through the boar’s hide, loosening their own teeth in the process.

Yet, not a single goblin—not even the ‘chieftain’—considered improving. Except for the mutant goblin.

‘If they keep thinking only about survival day by day, a monster like an ogre will show up and wipe them all out! Why don’t they think about getting stronger!’

The goblins were inferior and crude. The mutant found this fact deeply unsatisfactory.

Why didn’t they train?

Clearly, they had the will to survive, so why did they rush to satisfy their desires?

No, why did they tie their lives to their urges? What’s so important about that?

In the past, the mutant goblin had witnessed the massacre of his kin.

Back when they lived in the forest, a group called the ‘extermination squad’ passed by the goblins. Even as a young goblin then, the mutant immediately knew these weren’t ordinary humans riding tall horses clad in steel armor. The instinct to flee surged through him.

But the other goblins thought differently. Seeing the knight’s beauty at the front, they charged recklessly.

The result was horrific. Each flash of the knight’s sword sent spurts of blood flying. The goblins’ struggles were small, weak, and powerless. Human hooves crushed goblin heads, and entrails soaked the ground.

Escaping with all his might amidst the carnage, the mutant couldn’t help but wonder:

‘Why didn’t they know to run until death approached?’

‘Why are they so stupid, crude, and inferior?’

‘Humans aren’t much stronger than us. So why are these humans so powerful?’

‘Is it simply a difference in intelligence…?’

‘Or… is it because of the one who created us…?’

Thud.

A quiet footstep interrupted the mutant’s thoughts.

Hiss, hiss. Not just the mutant, but all the goblins turned their heads, catching the scent of outsiders carried by the wind. In their line of sight stood a group of humans.

“Chirp!? Humans! Humans!”

“Chirrrk! Chirp!”

“Human… why here… chirp. They’re armed.”

Confused yet quickly readying for battle, the goblins gripped their axes, fitting for a race born to match the wild.

“Goblins! What do we do? Claire?”

“…What can we do, fight obviously. Goblins are still monsters.”

“Claire, be careful. Even if they’re goblins… we don’t know how the goblins of the Demon Forest will be.”

“Hmph! No big bad goblins in sight!”

“Warrior-san, please don’t get hurt. You always get injured in every battle, making me worry!”

“So what?! Every time my flesh is torn, the priest heals me!”

“…My divine power isn’t infinite, you know.”

There were five humans in total. The golden-haired youth standing at the forefront especially caught the eye.

“Chirp, something’s off.”

“Chirrrk? You grab your axe quick!”

“We need to be cautious. Especially that boy with the sword. His stance is solid.”

“Chirrrrk! What nonsense!”

Unlike the growling goblins brimming with fighting spirit, the mutant swallowed carefully. Despite facing dozens of goblins, the humans seemed unusually calm.

It was as if they looked down on them. And the truly chilling part was that this sense of superiority felt natural from the human party.

“Chirrrrk! Charge!”

One goblin shouted and ran forward, signaling the start of the battle.

Dozens of goblins rushed in a pack toward the humans. The mutant, though delayed, hastily grabbed his axe and joined the rear ranks. After all, the goblin race only became strong when acting as a group. Knowing the clear limits of individual goblin strength, the mutant raised his stone axe high and prepared to attack.

Until the golden-haired boy swung his sword.

Sliiiice.

The sound of flesh being sliced filled the air.

Immediately followed by the overwhelming stench of blood.

Suddenly, goosebumps erupted on the mutant’s neck.

When he regained his senses, dozens of his kin had already been wiped out in one blow.

“Ch-chirp…!”

Rooaaar!

“You guys stay back.”

“Claire?”

“I can handle this much alone.”

When the mutant’s kin attacked the ‘extermination squad,’ he saw an unreal scene for the first time in his life.

The dazzling light reflecting off the knight’s raised blade—an overwhelmingly powerful sight.

Right now, that very spectacle was being recreated from the hero Claire’s sword.

“Chirrrk! Wh-what is this!?”

“Chirrrrk!”

“Evil monsters! Vanish before the light of my blade!”

The hero’s sword struck like lightning. A devastating slash enveloped the gathered goblins. The path of the sword mercilessly split the flesh and blood of the goblins. Again, dozens of goblins fell without uttering a single scream.

“Ch-chirp…”

The mutant’s hands trembled uncontrollably. An irresistible force beyond resistance was obliterating everything around him.

“Chirrrrrrk!”

“Kyaahh!”

“Where do you think you’re running! There’s no place for vile creatures like you in this world!”

Crash!

Thud!

Not just the mutant, but the relentless sword strikes of the human youth were nothing short of a natural disaster to the goblins. The battle-savvy goblins gradually lost their fighting spirit.

“St-stop…”

Crack!

Though the mutant scorned the other goblins, he wasn’t devoid of affection for them. Sharing meals, sleep, and daily lives built bonds that weren’t insignificant.

Such goblins were now being cruelly torn apart. A groan escaped the mutant’s green lips.

Slice!

“All of you die! You wicked goblin bastards!”

“Chirrrk! That human’s weird!”

“Kyaaaah!”

Cries of fellow goblins echoed everywhere. Struggling to find hope, the mutant found none.

Flame (Fiamma)! Cut off their escape!”

Whoosh!

The girl wielding the staff sharply commanded, and flames shot up from the ground. It was absurd. How could fire burst forth from empty land?

But reality proved otherwise. The scorching heat and roaring flames surrounded the goblins. With their retreat blocked, the goblins panicked, darting around aimlessly.

Moments earlier, the place where the tribe ate and laughed together had transformed into a sea of fire.

Meanwhile, the hero’s sword continued its relentless assault, severing anywhere from a few to dozens of lives at once.

Total chaos ensued. All the goblins dropped their stone axes and fled desperately from the hero. Only the mutant remained, trembling while still gripping his weapon, but his fighting spirit was also lost.

Whoosh!

A crimson torrent of blood swept through. The faces of fellow goblins, who had just shared meals and hunts, were splattered across the mutant’s face.

In that instant, something snapped in the mutant’s mind.

“Chiiiirk!!”

This way, he would die. Like the hundreds of his kin whose breaths had been cut off, he too would perish meaninglessly.

Tap tap tap tap!

The goblin raised his stone axe high and charged, shouting. His target was the golden-haired boy with the sword. He had to bury the axe in the boy’s skull before the sword returned. That was the only way to survive.

However, the disparity in strength was far greater than hoped.

Wham!

“Kieek!”

“You bastard! Where do you think you’re going!?”

The golden-haired boy’s kick struck the mutant’s abdomen. Despite all the training and daily sit-ups, the intense impact resonated through his entire body.

Gasping in excruciating pain, the mutant collapsed helplessly.

Crunch!

The hero’s boot pressed down on the mutant’s chest. Pressure like a boulder crushing him poured onto the mutant.

Swish.

“Die, goblin.”

“Chiiiiirk…!”

The sharp tip of the sword loomed before the goblin. Death. Those two heavy syllables descended upon him.

He was going to die.

When that sword fell, he would die.

Unable to move with his chest pinned down, the goblin screamed at the top of his lungs.

“Why!!”

“Hmm?”

“Why are you doing this to us! Chirp!”

“What nonsense.”

“We never attacked you! Why are you attacking us all of a sudden!? Chirp!”

Anyway, he was going to die.

The goblin had nothing left to lose, nowhere to retreat.

“To eat us? You humans don’t eat our kind! There’s no reason to slaughter us!!”

“Mutant, language skills…?”

“Why! Chirp! Why are you hunting us without any reason!!”

The humans’ gazes converged. Like looking at a curious monkey in a zoo.

“Ugh, uh! Chirp!”

Tears began to fall from the mutant goblin’s eyes. Embitterment materialized and fell like rain.

Looking down at this from above, Hero Claire coldly responded to the goblin’s desperate cry.

“Does humanity need a reason to kill goblins?”

“…!”

“You’re not beasts. You’re monsters. Monsters that humans must naturally exterminate. It’s justice to annihilate you when seen, and virtue to leave not a single one alive.”

“Chirp, chirp…!”

Punch punch.

The goblin’s fists pounded the ground.

“Unjust…!”

“What a strange one.”

“Why did you make us like this…!”

They weren’t lowly because they wanted to be.

They weren’t inferior because they chose to be.

It was simply how they were born.

Had he not been a mutant, he probably wouldn’t have even noticed this bitterness among the countless others.

“Chirp, chirrrk!”

“Chiiiiirk! Chirrk!”

Trapped by the wall of fire, sweating profusely while pondering, those fools would’ve stayed there.

“Who should I blame? The Supreme God who created you thus.”

“…God! God!!”

“Don’t dare mention the Lord with your filthy mouth.”

“What did we ever do wrong!? Living in this forest, we haven’t even met a single human!!”

“You.”

Despite the hero’s warning, the mutant’s grievances showed no sign of ending.

Since he was about to die anyway.

He intended to vent all the bitterness he had harbored in his heart without restraint.

“From birth, it’s been like this! God! That damn deity!! Because he made us this way!! Because he made us so that our reason would be disrupted by greed!!”

“Were we not supposed to exist in the first place!? Then why create us at all! We can think! We have friends, family! We aren’t trash that you humans can kill just because you see us! Ignoring even the laws of the wild, treating us as mere objects of slaughter!!”

“When we’re happy, we laugh! Sometimes we dance together! When we succeed in a big hunt, we throw parties! We get angry when a fellow dies! We feel sorrow when an old comrade passes away!”

“And if you made us this way…! At least give us the right to live! While you gave humans the ability to gain strength through training and knowledge through study!! Why do we have nothing!! No matter how long we live, we develop nothing! No matter how much we train, all we get is a bit more muscle, and no real power!!”

“For heaven’s sake! Why! Why are we like this!! Born as the ‘lowest monsters,’ no matter how hard we try throughout our lives, unable to escape this inferiority…! Born into a race with no hope…!”

“It’s too cruel…!!”

Tears streamed down endlessly, seeping into the ground. Hero Claire stared down at the goblin for a long moment.

“Done crying?”

“Guh, ugh, snifff…”

“What an extraordinary goblin. Speaks surprisingly fluently… The Mage Tower would’ve loved finding you.”

Swish!

With such calmness, the hero drove the sword hovering above the mutant goblin’s head downward.

The goblin squeezed his eyes shut. Tears spilled through his tightly shut eyelids.

Clang.

But the sword did not pierce his forehead.

Just before cleaving through his flesh, the sword’s path was blocked by a white glove.

“Such a genius was buried in a past life. Truly, fate is too merciless, huh? No matter how harsh fate may be, though.”

“…Who are you!?”

“Chirrk…?”

“Hey! Smart goblin!”

Appearing in the blink of an eye, holding back the hero’s blade, a white-masked figure shouted within the goblin’s field of vision.

“You possess the qualities to become a ‘god’!”
