Chapter 36: Caught On The Spot!!
Yuan Xiaoling hadn’t even said anything yet, and Bai Ling had already guessed the gist of it.
In her previous life’s research on Spiritual Power, there was a theory called “Homogenization Influence.” Simply put, the powers of a spiritual energy user would affect those around them; the longer or closer the relationship, the greater this influence would grow.
For instance, people around spiritual energy users were more likely to awaken their own spiritual power compared to other ordinary folks.
Expanding on this theory, if “rebirth” was also an expression of one’s own strength, then Yuan Xiaoling, who maintained the closest relationship with her over a long period, might have been influenced by her rebirth power. This could cause her to entangle with her past self from the timeline of her previous life, thus starting to regain memories from that decade.
Whether it’s quantum entanglement or some other kind of entanglement, somehow it all lined up.
Learning that Yuan Xiaoling had started regaining her memories, Bai Ling herself hadn’t expected it and subconsciously felt a surge of joy.
Upon reflection, in her ten years of scarred and broken existence filled with hatred, bloodshed, and betrayal, this cheeky little girl with a well-endowed chest was, surprisingly, her only memory worth cherishing.
[“The topic of memories is the most precious thing between two people, requiring long-term companionship to accumulate enough of them.”] — Bai Ling suddenly remembered a sentence from a forum post.
How miraculous, after ten years adrift in a sea of blood and death, resetting to zero, she could still reclaim something precious.
”Haha, I don’t understand what you’re talking about,” Yuan Xiaoling chuckled nervously, trying to bluff her way through, “Bai Ling, you’re acting weird again, speaking in riddles.”
Bai Ling narrowed her eyes and let out a cold chuckle.
Precious as memories were, the accounts of the little missy’s flip-flopping behavior in those memories still needed settling.
”I liked your half-dreaming state earlier; you were more honest then.”
”…Huh?”
”So, I’ll have to make you pass out like last night and wake up in that semi-conscious state again.”
As she spoke, she reached out and began unbuttoning her clothes.
”No no no, I’ll tell the truth!” Yuan Xiaoling hastily changed her tune, panic-stricken. “You ask, I answer.”
Simultaneously using both the old-school manual method and the new-school telekinetic force, who knows how terrifying Bai Ling had been last night.
”When did it start?” Bai Ling asked her first question.
”About one or two weeks ago, maybe earlier or later,” Yuan Xiaoling answered honestly, “Since it happened in dreams, I couldn’t really tell…”
This was the truth; during the first few instances of memory-laden dreams, she thought they were just regular dreams until she saw the system’s reward records last time, which made everything click into place.
Bai Ling nodded and continued with her second question: “How much do you remember?”
”Not much, just a few fragmented images,” Yuan Xiaoling hesitated for a moment before quietly saying, “Like when Yi Jie betrayed us, and you at the foot of the broken bridge…”
”Just those?”
”Just those.”
”Just these tiny fragments,” Bai Ling raised an eyebrow, “And you figured out the truth?”
To know she was a reborn soul just from that?
”In what era are we living? Who wouldn’t guess? I read web novels too,” Yuan Xiaoling puffed out her cheeks, “And when you caught me the first time, you said some strange things, as if I would do something unspeakably evil in the future…”
It was indeed a reasonable explanation, but… Bai Ling smirked mischievously, “So, do you know what bad deeds you will do in the future?”
”I don’t know,” Yuan Xiaoling quickly replied, “I haven’t recalled that much yet.”
”Really? The two fragments you’ve recalled both feature your presence,” Bai Ling sat on the edge of the bed, inching closer, “Don’t tell me you selectively ‘forgot’ the endings of those fragments.”
At the broken bridge, Yuan Xiaoling popped out dancing on graves. In the alley with hidden enemies, it was Yuan Xiaoling again, mocking her for picking a team full of spies.
Xiaoling’s face turned red: “Well, there must be some misunderstanding. We’ve known each other for so long, you know I’m not that kind of person…”
Bai Ling chuckled, thinking to herself, after ten years and one month of knowing each other, she was quite certain Yuan Xiaoling was exactly that kind of person.
She extended her hand toward Yuan Xiaoling: “Come here.”
Yuan Xiaoling hesitated for a moment, cautiously scooting closer a bit, then was immediately pulled into Bai Ling’s embrace, her Dabeitù firmly held down.
”Wahh…”
Bear with it, caught with incriminating history, can only temporarily endure Dabeitù’s suffering. I’ll get my revenge when the time comes, pressing it hard onto her face!
”Are you thinking about doing something bad?” Bai Ling suddenly asked.
”Nope, how could I,” Yuan Xiaoling blinked innocently, “I only think about good things.”
Facial cleanser isn’t bad, right?
Bai Ling didn’t press further, asking after a while, “How did you start recalling memories, under what conditions?”
Yuan Xiaoling’s body tensed slightly as she forced herself to appear calm: “I don’t know, it seems like every so often, I recall a small segment of memory. Maybe it will gradually recover with time.”
Since the first goal of “hiding the recovery of memories” had failed, she quickly shifted to the second goal—absolutely not letting Bai Ling know the condition for recovering memories.
Because the condition was “getting knocked out.”
Bai Ling looked at her serious little face suspiciously: “Really?”
”One hundred percent true!”
Alright, whether Blonde-haired Maiden knew or not, it couldn’t be questioned now, only to be tested for opportunities.
Must find a way to help her remember everything sooner.
”Why do you always look for chances to mock me in the future?” Bai Ling asked the big-chested girl in her arms.
She was genuinely curious about this.
”I don’t know, I’ve only recalled two fragments,” Yuan Xiaoling tilted her innocent little face, “I think it’s probably a misunderstanding, or just a joke, like last night.”
Bai Ling rolled her eyes, guessing Yuan Xiaoling would respond this way. Blonde-haired Maiden was always timid yet trouble-prone, cowering instantly upon facing adversity—something she’d known from the previous life.
”Don’t worry, I’ll figure out the conditions for memory recovery,” she grinned slyly, “and help you regain all your memories quickly.”
Yuan Xiaoling stiffened her face, barely managing to crack a smile:
”Thank you.”
After having her cuddled enough, Bai Ling released Yuan Xiaoling, along with her Dabeitù.
”The visit to Xiangshan Tea House is not happening today, as you said, it’s unlucky. The agreed-upon time is tomorrow. Let’s rest today and organize the information.”
She stood up, took out a stack of items from her backpack, and placed them on the desk where Yuan Xiaoling usually did her homework.
”The Murong family from Yunhai Company, members of the Haitian Yise Chamber of Commerce, and the Zhang family before, those wearing gray cloaks—do you know why I killed them?”
Perhaps this wasn’t Bai Ling’s deepest secret buried within, but it was certainly the most painful one. Aside from Yuan Xiaoling, who had been with her for ten years, she wouldn’t share it with anyone else.
