Chapter 71: The Gates Are Breached

Chapter 71: The Gates Are Breached

“Fireball Technique!”

Airael shouted vigorously as a massive fireball flew towards the siege engine below.

Around her, the other elves capable of offensive magic began casting spells as well.

In an instant, colorful magic attacks rained down on the siege engine.

It looked impressively fierce, but the actual effect was less than ideal.

For instance, Airael’s upgraded fireball technique only left a small dark mark on the siege engine.

“Your Majesty, this siege engine from the humans has probably been reinforced with anti-magic materials.”

Hels, witnessing the results, spoke to Airael.

“So, magic isn’t much good against it.”

“Not that it’s entirely useless; it’s just that based on what just happened, standard magical attacks can’t destroy it.”

Airael felt a bit downcast.

Their magical attacks weren’t effective, and they had no other way to stop the siege engine.

They were left helplessly watching as the siege engine advanced towards the city gates.

It dawned on Airael just how cunning the humans were.

They had clearly calculated everything in advance.

First, they disrupted the elves’ setup on the city wall, then, amid the chaos, deployed the siege engine—this terrifying weapon—to break through the gates of Silnas Fortress.

Now, their objective was achieved.

Physical attacks with stones were beyond their capabilities, and their magical assaults were largely ineffective against the siege engine.

Below, the magical attacks led by Airael only mildly hindered the siege engine’s progress.

Then, the siege engine was pushed by human soldiers right up to the gates.

The human soldiers began swinging massive hammers against the grand door of Silnas Fortress, which was as majestic as the city walls.

“Boom! Boom! Boom!”

Three successive blows echoed with tremendous sound and violent shockwaves that spread across the vicinity.

On the city wall, Airael felt frantic watching everything unfold.

Inside the gate, elven soldiers gritted their teeth, fiercely holding back the door, resisting against the advancing siege engine.

But ultimately, this was not a sustainable strategy.

With each strike from the siege engine, their bodies endured immense shocks.

If this continued, not to mention whether the door could withstand the relentless blows, they themselves might collapse first.

“Hold on! We must hold strong! We cannot let the human race break through the gates!”

From the back, Hela shouted encouragement while casting spells to assist them, helping to alleviate some pressure.

But the siege engine’s power was simply astounding.

The magic applied to the gates was rendered utterly ineffective.

Thus, Hela had to settle for casting spells on the elven soldiers instead.

“Boom! Boom! Boom!…”

Outside, human siege hammers relentlessly pounded the gates.

Soon enough, a large breach was struck into the grand door.

“It’s broken! It’s broken!…”

The excited shouts of human soldiers rang out around them.

The assault of the siege hammer momentarily ceased.

“Don’t stop! Keep going!”

A human officer barked, his curved lips betraying the exhilaration hidden within.

The breach in the gates essentially meant the city had fallen.

He was about to earn great merit.

Such a significant achievement, acquired so effortlessly, was truly something to be excited about.

With the officer’s reprimands, the human soldiers quickly got back to work.

The elven soldiers behind the gates stared at the massive hole that had been smashed open, their faces pale as death.

They couldn’t blame themselves; they had given their all.

The gates were simply too fragile, or perhaps the enemy was just too strong.

Hela understood this as well.

So, she didn’t lay blame; instead, she spoke up, “Don’t worry about the gates anymore! Form a defensive line and hold this position! We cannot let the human soldiers breach into the city!”

The elven soldiers immediately obeyed, swiftly forming a defensive formation at the gate.

Under their watch, the already breached gates were soon completely smashed down by the humans outside.

With the gates broken, human soldiers surged wildly through the entrance.

However, waiting for them were Hela’s magic and the arrows of the elven archers.

In an instant, a host of human soldiers fell.

But at that moment, the human soldiers were in a frenzy.

The elves’ gates were breached, and that signified that the humans had practically secured victory in this battle.

At such a moment, anyone who dared to charge and survive would earn tangible military merit.

From that point, wealth and glory would be theirs for the taking.

On the city walls, with the gates breached, Airael was in a state of devastation.

She never imagined that on the very first day the outer city walls of Silnas Fortress would fall.

Though they still had an inner wall, how long could it hold?

The human soldiers were simply too frenzied; the elves couldn’t push them back.

“It’s broken!”

Victor, among the human army outside, shouted with excitement.

Suratu also wore a smile.

The progression of the battle exceeded their expectations.

They hadn’t anticipated things would go so smoothly.

Next, the entire human army moved into action.

With the elven gates breached, the battle reached its final decisive moment.

Countless human soldiers flooded towards Silnas Fortress.

Some rushed directly to the gates; others aimed for the siege ladders.

No matter where they headed, none were willing to lag behind.

At such a time, everyone wanted a piece of the pie in this imminent victory.

After all, this could very well be the last battle for conquering the elven race.

One last opportunity for a bounty; of course, they’d grab as much as they could.

“Your Majesty, we must retreat! The outer city can’t withstand any longer.”

Seeing the all-out assault of the humans, Hels said to Airael.

Upon hearing this, Airael forced herself to shake off her daze and looked at the human army outside the walls.

From her viewpoint, the human soldiers resembled a swarm of ants, densely packed.

Yet, it was such a swarm of ants that had shaken the mighty Silnas Fortress in less than a day.

“Your Majesty!”

Seeing Airael suddenly lost in thought, Hels had to call out to her again.

Airael snapped back just as she was about to leave the city walls with Hels.

She suddenly halted and continued gazing at the human army outside.

As she watched, the worried expression on her face vanished, replaced by surprise.

They were breaking ranks!

The human army was beginning to fall into disarray; although they still maintained some semblance of order, chaos was starting to show.

The human soldiers and officers were consumed by thoughts of how to gain military merit.

They failed to notice that in their mad rush forward, their formation was beginning to scatter.
