Chapter 36 The Music Room
“Valar… why? Have we ever wronged him? Why would he do such a thing!”
Catherine bit her lip firmly, her face filled with resentment, clearly unable to understand Valar’s actions.
The Duke, however, seemed much calmer about it.
“This is something we need to ask him directly… Charles.”
He waved his hand toward the door, and a butler named Charles came in.
“What is it, Your Grace?”
“You go and tell the hunters outside that Hoover should notify Bella to check if Valar has returned to the workshop. If he hasn’t, send people to search the entire city. Once you find him, keep him under watch and report back to me.” The Duke tapped the table lightly, pondering for a moment before adding, “This matter needs to be handled quickly. Under no circumstances should he leave the city. After doing this… have Hoover come to my study.”
“Yes, Your Grace.” The butler bowed deeply, accepting the order and quickly left.
“Why not just arrest him?” Catherine clearly had some dissatisfaction with the Duke’s handling of the situation, her eyes wide as she looked at him.
“Well, don’t rush. Catching Valar isn’t difficult, but he doesn’t have a reason to assassinate Miss Sylvie. There must be someone behind this. Finding out who that person is is what truly matters.” He gave a slight cold snort as he said this, “To dare to order my people to assassinate my guest on my own grounds, they really have nerve.”
He turned to look at me, a hint of a smile appearing on his stern face.
“Miss Sylvie, as a Knight of the Pope, you might not fear these people, but I hope you will just wait for the outcome.”
At this moment, the Duke appeared quite composed, showing no signs of emotion on his face.
He was not the type of person with a gentle demeanor. Although he often wore a smile and acted approachable, there was an air of authority about him that was deeply ingrained.
Such a person could never be considered easy to get along with, yet I inexplicably trusted him.
“Mm-hm.”
I nodded, about to say some polite words.
Gurgle—
My stomach chose that moment to betray me.
“Oh, look at us, we’ve been talking so much that we forgot about dinner… You must be starving. Let me get you something to eat; it’ll be ready soon.” Lady Catherine gently patted my head and turned towards the kitchen.
Watching her swift departure, and looking at the Duke’s half-smiling expression, my face warmed slightly, and I lowered my head awkwardly.
Perhaps sensing my embarrassment, the Duke deliberately changed the subject.
“Miss Sylvie, do you like music?”
Music? In my previous life, I loved music very much.
Almost no one has heard this word in this world.
Perhaps it’s because Carlos is not a person with much sentiment.
“Like.”
“Can you play the piano?”
… Is there a piano in this world too? This is the instrument I’m best at. I just don’t know if the piano in this world is the same as the one I know, so I couldn’t answer his question and just shook my head.
“I don’t know.”
But the Duke obviously misunderstood me.
“Oh, I almost forgot that you don’t remember your past,” he paused, seemingly casually glanced at me, then continued, “There is a practice room for the piano in the castle, right next to the bedroom you’re currently staying in. That was specially made for Peyelo. She really likes the piano and plays it very well. Whenever I had something troubling me, she would pull me over and play some soothing pieces for me to listen to.”
Hearing this, I lifted my head and looked at his face in surprise. Those sharp features seemed softer at that moment.
Then he waved at me with a smile.
“Haha, don’t mind it. I was just saying it casually. If you like music, you might as well go take a look and try it out. I always think that such slender and beautiful fingers of yours would be a pity not to play the piano.”
It sounded casual, but there was a hint of expectation in his eyes.
“… Yes.”
I didn’t know how to respond, so I just softly agreed.
After a moment of silence, the Duke brought up another topic.
“Miss Silviga, since you lost your memory, it hasn’t been half a year yet, right?”
“No.”
“Did you forget everything before? I heard from Carlos that the church found you in the village. What were you doing there?”
“I lived there for a while. Later, I encountered the Abyss.”
“Did you forget everything before that? For example, how you ended up in the small village of Xierjiaya.”
I remained silent.
I didn’t want to deceive this person, but it was impossible for me to honestly say, “Actually, I am a monster of the Abyss.” After hesitating for a moment, I finally slowly shook my head.
“…Is that so.” The Duke murmured to himself.
“Haha, sorry for asking strange questions. I was thinking that since you don’t remember anything and have been acting with that boy Carlos, you must be quite clueless about many things now, right? I know that boy; he’s an action-oriented type and is not good at teaching others.”
This hit close to home, so I immediately nodded.
“How about this, after dinner, go to the study and take a look. There are some books I cherish there. Pick a few to read.”
