Chapter 596: The Pupil of the Sky
Under the sparse clouds of the Flowing Clouds, the two sides faced off, their lines stretching for several kilometers. With the sound of a horn, the lines of Clancia below began to move slowly at first and then faster, spreading forward like a boiling fire.
The Frost Union could not sit idle either; the airships adjusted their cannons and started firing. Crimson flames slanted down onto the Earth.
Behind Clancia, white-winged priests with silver eyes opened their wings and slowly rose into the sky. Their number approached 200, each being of Sequence 6 or higher. They were the core members of the Church this time.
These ‘angels’ wore robes with white backgrounds and gold edges, holding light-cast long swords. As they ascended, unquenchable pure white flames rose with them.
After ascending, they rapidly moved forward, resembling white fire meteors chasing each other in the sky, drawing intersecting curves.
Facing this sudden attack, the airships in the sky had no choice but to turn their cannons to counter this imminent threat. After all, in the minds of the high-ranking officials of the Frost Union, airships were much more valuable than the golems and soldiers on the ground.
Crimson beams of magic crisscrossed in the sky, striking down some ‘angels’, turning them into burning embers, while the remaining ‘angels’ used their long swords to slash open the airships, tearing through their armor and exposing their vulnerable cores before detonating them.
For a time, the sky became chaotic and intense. Explosions, shattering sounds, and tearing noises echoed continuously, accompanied by thick smoke and flames. Then, pieces of wreckage fell from the sky one after another.
The battle continued, not only on the ground but also in the sky.
High-ranking mages in the airships cast deep blue magical grids that spread across the sky, restricting these agile ‘angels’ so that their own cannon fire and skills could concentrate on eliminating these enemies.
Facing such a predicament, a silver-haired ‘angel’ gradually rose up, seemingly having prepared for this moment for a long time. When she ascended, she waved her staff, causing the air currents to stir and churn.
Lolan Hill felt the flowing atmosphere in the sky, the gentle breezes that responded to her command, as if extensions of her body. Compared to before, her strength had now reached the level of [Angel Sequence 6 · Pupil of the Sky] (Legend Coral Rank), allowing her to easily crush other Sequence 7 classes and even stand a chance against Sequence 8.
Perhaps due to awakening memories of the past or clearly understanding her origins, her control over air and wind was significantly stronger than before.
She could now directly deprive some lives and objects of their ability to manipulate air currents, preventing them from flying. Although airships mostly relied on anti-gravity devices, losing the ability to manipulate air currents made them become lifeless iron boxes.
A pale blue current blew forward, causing the propellers of the airships to spin idly, while the newly formed grid disintegrated into scattered sand and vanished into the air.
Thus, the ‘angels’ in the sky were not restrained, while the airships became even more rigid, making them easy targets for the enemy to tear apart and send plummeting.
“Damn!”
The airship general in black and red uniform punched the wall of the cabin, gritting his teeth as he watched the silver-haired girl in the sky.
“Who is she? Wasn’t she also there during the Falcon Kingdom incident? How did she do it? Could she be a witch who controls the power of ‘wind’?”
A high-ranking mage in purple robes observed intently and replied, “Lord Hunter, that might be Lolan Hill, the Star Witch of Clancia.”
“? ” Hunter furrowed his brows, finding it hard to believe, then picked up a nearby telescope to take a closer look.
“Such beauty is indeed impeccable, but why? Isn’t her power supposed to be controlling ‘starlight’?”
“I have never heard of a witch who can control two completely different powers, or does she possess some holy relic?”
“That’s hard to say. Most relics are…”
All were kept in the secret vaults of Emanas, watched over by that special sage. According to our intelligence, even after the previous great upheaval, the vault remained untouched.”
“Very well. But now that we’ve lost our aerial airships’ support, the battle below will surely be difficult.” Hunter, despite usually having little in common with the mages who operated the golems, knew he wouldn’t fare well if this battle failed.
“Do not worry, my lord. Below us, there are still four newly developed ‘Titan’ golems, each with power above Sequence 8. They won’t be defeated so easily,” reassured one of the soldiers.
While the battle continued in the sky, dramatic changes occurred below.
The fierce cavalry charge broke through the frost soldiers guarding the defense line. The musketeers, who had prepared to fire, found themselves unable to reload their weapons as the charging cavalry arrived, lances piercing through the fragile musketeers like skewering melons, trampling the scattered firearms beneath their hooves.
Smoke and the acrid smell of burning filled the air, with metallic clashing and shattering sounds echoing everywhere. After breaking through several formations ahead, the advancing cavalry finally clashed with the towering golems.
Lances struck the sturdy golems, their force and scorching torrents breaking through the outer layers and piercing inside. The lodged lances were abandoned, and warriors drew their long swords from their waists to continue their charge.
Thus, the battlefield saw these golems stand firm like reefs against the scorching cavalry tide, only to be pierced by sharp lances until they could no longer bear the weight, collapsing and fragmenting. The relentless cavalry cut them into pieces.
The cavalry pressed on without hesitation, their iron hooves crushing formation after formation, breaking through line after line, until they faced the four towering, nearly hundred-meter-high ‘golems.’
These golems stood like titans, reaching towards the sky from the ground, towering over the crowd below.
“It’s finally my turn,” Hedley said, seated inside a ‘Titan’ golem, overlooking the dense, surging cavalry below with bloodthirsty excitement.
Her previously damaged Sequence 7 golem had been wrecked during the mountain battle by Tug’s manipulation of plants. Repairing it would take a long time.
But in the meantime, decisive weapons had been transported via sea routes—four Sequence 8 golems, not only immensely sturdy but also exerting terrifying control over the battlefield.
“Let me show you the great wisdom of the Frost Union,” Hedley’s forehead glowed with a pale blue circle, her hair gradually becoming transparent and radiating light. Inside the golem, various gauges and images lit up.
Such facilities and designs were hard to imagine being produced in a world with such backward industrial levels; they seemed more like advanced technological products. If Lolan Hill were here, she would likely be amazed—the craftsmanship was already at its peak during the twilight era.
Though Dorothy, the temporal witch, had passed away centuries ago, her legacy for mages remained influential. Guided by ancient technology, they constructed defensive works and golems, developed biotechnology, and united with other nations like Xuehua to repel the attack of the Verdant Empire, preserving the flame of hope.
The Titan golem lifted its foot and stomped down heavily, raising a cloud of dark specks. Its chest core opened, and a ten-meter-thick scarlet flame shot out, sweeping across the ground, engulfing charging knights in flames.
“Hahahaha!” Hedley laughed maniacally.
“Indeed. Indeed, this feels so right.”
Hedley listened to the crackling sound of exploding flames beneath her feet, feeling immense joy. The sense of dominating and crushing life always held such allure.
“Break them, Cassius’ Spear!” A voice lamented from the top of the sky.
Hedley shifted her vision toward the sky. Above the endless expanse, a small black dot against the sun was indistinct, but the pale green wings and the
—
Countless currents converged into a verdant lance,
With the sky as the bow and the atmosphere as the arrow.
Layer upon layer of air currents twisted and swirled in the sky, wind columns entwined, emitting sharp and piercing sounds as they tore away. The airships in the sky had vanished without a trace.
“Ha, can even a hurricane pierce through a Titan?” Hedley, despite sensing the immense power within the gale, placed greater faith in the golem beneath her.
A dense barrier of silver runes rose from the exterior of the golem, forming a semi-circular shield to ward off the colossal spear of wind from the sky.
The air currents continuously rubbed against the barrier, emitting sharp sounds and flashes of light. Hedley was about to laugh when she suddenly felt a lightness underfoot.
At some unknown moment, the dispersed air currents reassembled, causing the towering golem to inevitably topple over.
She struggled to rise and sought help from several other golems around her, but unfortunately, the others were in similar predicaments. Even if they managed to withstand the onslaught of the wind spear, they still could not resist the overwhelming force that pushed them, ultimately toppling them over.
Boom—
Intense tremors echoed across the earth as four golems crashed to the ground. Sparks and cracks emitted from their mechanical components. Blood trickled from Hedley’s forehead as she sat inside one of them.
Clenching her teeth, she prepared to stand again, but the figure in the sky did not give her a chance.
Light blue wings turned white under the sun, then dazzling beams of light converged in the air, solidified, and fell.
These ten-meter-long beams of light pierced directly into the joints of the golems, cutting off the flow of magic, and immobilizing them. The once active cores of the golems slowed down and gradually dimmed.
“Move for me!” Hedley continuously poured her own magic into the core of the golem, trying to reactivate it, but to no avail. At this moment, the figures with fluttering banners approached again.
“Fools.” She spat out blood and commanded the golem to open its various compartments, releasing the accumulated fuel for flames. The fierce fire engulfed the charging warriors once more.
“What’s the point of such a charge? It’s merely the mournful cry of the old era,” she said indifferently.
But just as she struggled to get the golem back up, another violent jolt came.
“How… how is this possible?”
In her vision, the charging figures dashed through the raging flames, carrying burning bodies and desperate cries, surging forward like revenants from the underworld. They fearlessly collided with the golems, their blazing lances piercing the intricate bodies, igniting sparks.
Thus, the fearsome cavalry formation of the烈风骑军 (Stormwind Cavalry) reappeared, shattering one golem after another, annihilating them amidst the march of death and fire.
And so, the first clash between Starlight and Rose came to an end.
Under the relentless charge of the glorious cavalry, the forces of the Frost Union retreated in disarray, pursued relentlessly and forced to abandon their occupied lands within weeks.
From the Green Wild County in central Clancia, to the capital of the Vergha Alliance, Hope Lane, from the northern banks of the Black Pine River to the coast of Emerald Port, everywhere were abandoned supplies and fleeing soldiers.
A year’s worth of gains turned to dust in an instant, along with nearly a million combat-ready troops.
