Chapter 56: Cain: Legion Commander, You’ve Changed
After finishing that question, Arthur shifted his focus back to Airael’s form: “Ailia, is your body really okay?”
“I’m fine, you don’t need to worry about me too much. You probably have other things to handle, so hurry back and don’t let me hold you up,” Ailia replied.
“Alright!”
Although Arthur wanted to say more, Airael’s attitude left him speechless, and he could only agree.
Once he returned to his office tent, he bumped into Cain, who had come to report on his work.
After chatting about work, they started to shoot the breeze.
“Cain, do you have a girlfriend?”
Arthur suddenly asked, turning his gaze on Cain.
He found himself increasingly confused about Airael, so he thought he’d consult Cain for some wisdom and share experiences on this topic.
“Why are you asking that all of a sudden?” Cain was taken aback.
“I just wanted to know. To be honest, I don’t know much about your private life,” Arthur said.
“No!” Cain shook his head.
“Eh! You really don’t have one?”
“Yup! I haven’t really thought about that stuff yet.”
Looking at Cain, Arthur felt as if he was seeing his younger self.
Back when he hadn’t contemplated those matters either, planning to live his life solo—until Airael’s sudden entrance completely derailed his plans and turned him into his current self.
But he couldn’t say that this feeling was all that bad.
After some thought, Arthur said to Cain, “Actually, you should start considering that kind of thing, right?”
“Why are you suddenly telling me this today, Commander?” Cain asked, countering with a question instead of answering.
Arthur’s expression changed; he coughed a couple of times and said, “Ahem—! I just think it’s necessary for a commander to care about the daily lives of his subordinates.”
This made him feel quite awkward.
What he didn’t expect was that Cain, being so good-looking, was still just as green in this area as he used to be.
Meaning when it came to such matters, Cain was even less experienced than he was, so there was no way Cain could lend him any wisdom.
“Thanks for your concern, Commander, but I don’t think it’s necessary right now,” Cain said.
Seeing Cain’s expression, Arthur urged, “Actually, it’s quite necessary.”
Cain looked at Arthur.
Suddenly, Arthur felt a bit uneasy under Cain’s gaze.
After a moment, Cain spoke up, “Commander, do you know something?”
Know what?
“Before I met you, my impression of you was completely different from after meeting you.”
“What’s different?” Arthur asked.
“To put it plainly, there’s the matter of Miss Ailia. You used to be known as someone who kept their distance from women, but now…”
Cain didn’t finish his sentence and just shook his head, looking at Arthur with a face full of pity.
Arthur wasn’t angry about Cain’s critique; instead, he chuckled and said, “I think I’m doing pretty well now. Cain, I suppose this is what love is!”
“Love, huh?” Cain sighed.
He had no clue what that word meant.
Looking at Cain, Arthur realized his subordinate was just like he had been back then.
If not for some unexpected events, he probably wouldn’t have become this way either and might still be as innocent as Cain.
So, Cain definitely needed his own unexpected event.
Thinking about his own unexpected moment, Cain remembered that sword he had almost forgotten.
After Airael’s warning before, he had set the sword aside and not thought about using it again.
But now that he thought about it, even if that sword was considered a magic sword by Airael, he still owed it some thanks.
That night, back at his camp, Arthur dug out that nearly forgotten sword and placed it on the table for inspection.
No matter how you looked at it, that sword didn’t seem anything like the magic sword Airael described—instead, it looked more like a holy sword, a king’s sword.
And according to prophecy, it was supposed to be a king’s sword.
Airael, who hadn’t paid much attention to Arthur rummaging through his things, walked over curiously when she saw him take that sword out, asking, “Arthur, why did you suddenly pull it out?”
“I just thought it was a shame to leave this sword sitting here collecting dust.”
“This sword contains immense power, and using it would indeed grant you great strength. But, Arthur, do you have the confidence to control it?”
Arthur was momentarily taken aback by Airael’s question.
“Power isn’t inherently good or bad, but if it’s power you can’t control, then it certainly won’t be a good thing for you. It could turn you into a puppet of that power.”
“A puppet of power?”
“Do you remember Mork, who transformed into a demon at Malong Fortress?”
“Demon? Mork? Is that form he took really a demon?”
“Whatever it is, it was a sign that Mork couldn’t control the power inside him. However, he was incredibly strong; even though he couldn’t control that power, he managed to suppress it so it wouldn’t fully take over him.”
Airael’s expression showed appreciation.
Just this fact alone significantly changed Airael’s impression of Mork.
Arthur spoke up, “So, if I can do better than Mork or at least match him, I can use this sword, right?”
“That’s correct. Arthur, as long as you believe you can control this sword, I won’t oppose your use of it.”
Arthur nodded.
Then he put the sword away.
“Ailia, let’s get some rest.”
“Yeah!”
Airael nodded and moved in to help Arthur take off his armor.
Just after the armor was removed and set aside, Arthur wrapped his arms around Airael and asked, “Ailia, can we tonight?”
Airael’s face flushed bright red, and she quickly replied, “No!”
She was nearly certain she was pregnant by now.
At this early stage, the baby was incredibly fragile and couldn’t handle any roughhousing.
Disappointment washed over Arthur’s face, and he didn’t push Airael further.
They both put on their pajamas and lay down in bed to rest.
However, Airael didn’t fall asleep; under the moonlight, her big eyes remained wide open.
At that moment, she was snugly held in Arthur’s embrace.
She could distinctly feel something of Arthur’s pressing against her.
In this state, how could she possibly relax enough to sleep?
Although she trusted that Arthur wouldn’t take advantage of her vulnerability, it surely wasn’t easy for him to keep things bottled up like this!
“Arthur!” Airael called softly.
She knew without a doubt that Arthur wasn’t asleep either at that moment.
