Chapter 557 The Door to Truth (10k)
Elective classes are usually scheduled on Thursdays and Fridays, with occasional evening classes from Monday to Wednesday.
When professors arrange their schedules, they also make sure that courses do not overlap.
But if it’s unavoidable, students will be notified and asked to choose between two conflicting courses.
For example, “Alchemy Class” and “Knighthood Class” are both scheduled for the first period on Thursday morning and cannot be taken simultaneously.
“Transformation Class” is also set on Thursday evening, just like “Astrology Class.”
As for “Medical Class,” it is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
Dark chose two courses: one is the “Alchemy Class” in the first period on Thursday morning, and the other is the “Astrology Class” on Thursday evening.
Perhaps because he spent a lot of time in the clubroom, when he arrived at the “Alchemy Class” classroom on the fourth floor of the castle, he found that the classroom was already full.
He habitually entered through the back door; the sound of the door opening slightly attracted the attention of a few students in the back row, but that was all.
In a classroom that can accommodate hundreds of people, there were less than thirty students seated, ranging from second year to fifth year.
The classroom was very quiet, unlike the noisy classrooms of the first and second years.
Even those who were talking would try to lower their voices.
Most of the students were quietly reading books.
“Alchemy Class” is not an easy subject to learn.
Its practicality is far inferior to “Mana Theory” in this era, yet its learning difficulty is much higher.
Students who choose “Alchemy Class,” even if they come out of admiration, usually have extremely high learning abilities.
In other words, everyone present is an outstanding student from each grade!
Dark slowed down as he walked forward and noticed that most people were sitting in the front row—seemingly to better admire the alchemy master. The middle and back rows were almost empty.
Considering that sitting in the last row would seem too out of place, he moved forward a bit.
Of course, he still chose a window seat.
The windows in the classroom were mostly open, and the wind blowing in from outside carried a hint of the morning’s coolness.
After Dark sat down, he took out his “Mana Language” textbook.
With some time before class started, he planned to review the “Mana Language” knowledge he had mastered yesterday.
However, after flipping open the book, his gaze involuntarily swept across the classroom.
There were unexpectedly many familiar students in this classroom.
Just among the second year students, there were Sarah Swati, Emma Maltis, Eudora Envy, and Vanessa Bolt from the Fool’s Academy.
Seeing this second-year class president again, Dark finally showed some surprise in his eyes.
Professor Kazel only selected five students from the second year, with one from each academy. Being chosen alongside Sarah and Emma, this Vanessa Bolt must possess some precious qualities not easily seen.
Dark paid more attention and looked at the students from other grades.
There were more third-year students in school uniforms compared to second-year students, but there were seven of them.
Among these seven third-year students, he could only recall the name of the senior he once defeated in his debut match—Else Kevin.
Else Kevin had also won the “Crimson Star” award during the Halloween event in the first year and was an outstanding student from the Noble Academy.
Dark hadn’t expected to someday attend the same class as this senior.
However, he wasn’t very familiar with the other third-year students.
Even if they had crossed paths in the castle, he could hardly call out their names.
On the contrary, several fourth-year students were recognizable.
Fourth-year students were the most numerous in this classroom.
Dark quickly counted and found there were exactly twelve of them!
One of them was Winny Scarlet, a famous descendant of the “Winter Sage” from the Mana Academy!
Another fourth-year student from the Mana Academy whom Dark was relatively familiar with was Angelia Hudson.
She was a Mana Academy student who only joined the Dueling Club recruitment in the second semester of the third year.
Dark had a deep impression of her.
Apart from Winny and Angelia, the fourth-year senior from the Noble Academy, Mike Owen, who had risen to the rank of senior, surprisingly also chose this elective course.
Additionally, Tom Nixon, a fourth-year student from the Fool’s Academy, a half-breed born in the slums who had made a deal with the “Blood Princess,” was sitting alone in one of the rows.
It seemed that Senior Tom Nixon was on good terms with Wit Gold due to his connection with the “Blood Princess.”
“More familiar faces in the fourth year than I imagined.”
Dark clicked his tongue, then glanced at the fifth-year students.
There were only six fifth-year students.
Unfortunately, Pandora Dragon was not among them.
Dark did not pay much attention to the other fifth-year students, and could only recognize one as the current president of the Dueling Club, Inia Knight from the Knight Academy.
And another was “Fairy Princess” Eluri Clarissa.
This senior, who has royal blood and is known as the “Princess,” once participated in the Easter Duel Festival.
But after a grueling battle of thirty rounds, she lost to the “Dragon Slayer” Luke Beck.
The remaining four students couldn’t be named, but they were likely excellent students.
…
Dark observed briefly and then withdrew his gaze.
Although it felt great to attend classes with so many outstanding seniors, they wouldn’t help you learn. Ultimately, what you learn and how much you learn depends on yourself.
Dark quickly focused on the textbook.
But soon, a pink-haired little cutie quietly moved something to his right seat.
Dark glanced sideways and noticed Eudora staring intently at the desk, her ears turning red, completely losing her ability to communicate.
He couldn’t help but smile helplessly and didn’t ask her to move away.
Times had changed.
Dark Demon was no longer the kind of teenager easily stirred by “Bliss.”
He had considerable composure.
…
“Ding-dong!”
As the bell rang, Professor Kazel walked steadily into the classroom.
When he reached the podium, his height suddenly seemed to increase.
Experienced as he was, Dark naturally knew there was a footstool under the lectern.
Professor Kazel waved his wand lightly, and the glowing light left ripples in the air.
He looked energetic, smiling warmly, and said in a gentle tone, “Thank you all for choosing this ‘Alchemy Class.’ Despite ‘Alchemy’ being a relic of the past era,
, yet we can always find some embers from the ashes.
“I hope that in the coming year, you can also learn something beneficial for your own growth from my class. That would be enough for me.”
His voice seemed to possess a magical power, causing all thirty students below to involuntarily focus their attention.
Professor Kazel’s gaze swept over the faces of these thirty students in an instant, then he smiled and said, “As for the self-introduction segment, let’s skip it for now. I already know each of your names, and I’m sure you know mine too.”
Even so, he still wrote his name on the blackboard.
Then he continued, “At the beginning of this class, I want to know how much you understand about alchemy. Who would like to share their views? What is alchemy?”
…
What is alchemy?
Dark could not help but ponder.
His concept of alchemy was mainly derived from information gathered from various works in his previous life, and he did not have much in-depth understanding of real alchemy in this world.
Like magic, alchemy requires a vast amount of knowledge as a prerequisite, making it daunting for many.
However, if forced to summarize, he had some understanding of what alchemy is.
But just as he was about to raise his hand, he noticed straight arms rising from the front row.
“Good students indeed rush to answer…”
Dark lowered his slightly raised hand and prepared to be a listener.
…
Professor Kazel’s gaze then swept across the students’ faces, before pointing at Emma.
Emma immediately stood up.
Even when taking classes with so many seniors, she didn’t seem overly nervous; her voice remained as clear as ever.
“In my view, alchemy is essentially a transaction. An alchemist pays a price to trade with the Door to Truth, thus obtaining an equivalent return, which is alchemy itself.”
As Emma shared her insight, the expressions of the seniors varied, but most of them lowered their hands, contemplating carefully.
A visible smile appeared on Professor Kazel’s face, and he raised his voice, “Excellent, very excellent. Although there are slight flaws in the wording, this is indeed an interpretation of alchemy. Emma Maltis gets five points. So, Mr. Kevin, do you have any new insights?”
Else Kevin from the Third Year Noble Academy stood up, first glanced at Emma who had sat down, then said, “My understanding differs from Emma Maltis. While alchemy is always claimed to be ‘equivalent exchange,’ how exactly do we measure value?
Do things considered equivalent in alchemy truly hold the same value?
Even in ordinary markets, the value of every item changes over time, let alone the materials used in alchemy. Therefore, alchemy cannot simply be equivalent exchange.”
Professor Kazel’s eyebrows twitched, and he smiled, “Great insight. Then what do you think alchemy is?”
Else Kevin straightened her back and said, “Personally, I believe alchemy is magic. Despite the difference in terms and methods of casting, alchemy undoubtedly requires mana support, just like magic, to create extraordinary objects.”
Professor Kazel clearly felt very pleased with Else Kevin’s unconventional response.
He clapped his hands and said, “Every object seen from different angles reveals different appearances. Only by trying and thinking can we make new discoveries. Else Kevin gets five points. Tom Nixon, you’re next.”
Tom Nixon from the Fourth Year Fool’s Academy stood up, his eyes peering out from under his black bangs with a hint of mockery.
He glanced at Else Kevin and said, “Professor, indulging students recklessly won’t do. If what this younger brother Kevin said were true in ancient times when alchemy was prevalent, he would have been caught and burned alive.
The equivalent exchange in alchemy is not something market prices can compare. Younger brother Kevin thinks the value of an item changes over time, making it impossible to measure.
But anyone who knows anything about alchemy understands that its concept of value is fundamentally different from general understanding.
Its standard is inscribed within the ‘Door to Truth,’ and the ‘Door to Truth’ has long been proven to exist.”
Else Kevin heard the mocking tone and frowned, “I didn’t deny the principle of equivalent exchange. Furthermore, has the standard set by the ‘Door to Truth’ for measuring the value of items remained unchanged for millennia? If so, why are most ancient alchemical recipes no longer usable?”
Tom Nixon looked at him and raised an eyebrow, “That is precisely what I want to learn.”
Seeing the two about to argue, Professor Kazel quickly interrupted, “Having more perspectives means having more paths to explore. This is not a bad thing. Does anyone else have a different perspective?”
At this point, most of the students in the classroom had lowered their hands.
But when Professor Kazel asked again, someone raised their hand once more.
Kazel pointed his wand at her.
Vini Scarlet stood up, instantly drawing the entire classroom’s attention.
Whether they were third-year or fifth-year students, they all paid close attention to her.
She placed her hand on the book and said, “In my view, alchemy is a tool for exploring truth. Alchemists seek to glimpse the inside of the ‘Door to Truth,’ digging out the truth, and striving to discover methods that can cause the ‘Door to Truth’ to react. These methods are alchemy.”
Tom Nixon immediately retorted, “How noble can alchemists be? The original alchemy was merely a technique developed to refine gold.”
He was originally a very low-key person, but after shining in the Easter Duel Festival, he became more high-profile.
However, Vini Scarlet clearly ignored his implication and sat down immediately after answering the question.
It seemed like she was just mechanically collecting credits.
…
Professor Kazel signaled Tom Nixon to sit down, then waved his wand and said, “The origin and purpose of alchemy have always been questions lacking definitive answers. Some say alchemy was a technique developed by ancient alchemists to produce gold, others see alchemists as tools for exploring the ‘Door to Truth,’ and even some believe the purpose of studying alchemy is to achieve immortality…”
“The river of history is too long; we can no longer investigate it, but we can know where alchemy is heading and grasp it with our own hands.”
“Now turn to page one of The Secrets of Alchemy.”
As doubts about where the Secrets of Alchemy were, a golden light appeared unexpectedly before everyone.
Professor Kazel pointed his wand, and thick volumes of the Secrets of Alchemy appeared within the golden light.
Dark lowered his head slightly and saw the textbook in front of him.
The Mysteries of Alchemy was truly a “golden book.”
Before being opened, it looked like a solid gold brick, with the gold on the cover seeming to flow at any moment.
Following Professor Kazel’s instructions, he turned to the first page.
In the middle of the page, there was a small scale drawn, and below it were still those four words—”Equivalent Exchange.”
No matter how the value of something was measured.
However, “Equivalent Exchange” remained the fundamental principle of alchemy.
In other words, measuring value was the authority of the “Door to Truth,” while paying the price was the obligation of an alchemist.
The fairness and justice of alchemy were built upon the fairness and justice of the “Door to Truth.”
Dark turned to the second page and saw the title of the first chapter under the table of contents—”Value!”
“An alchemist’s primary task before mastering alchemy is to clarify the value of anything.”
“From the perspective of the ‘Door to Truth,’ evaluating the value of things, only after confirming the value can one place it on the same scale as their desire.”
“The earliest alchemists did not know the intricacies; they evaluated the value of things from their own perspectives, believing weeds were certainly worthless, and diamonds were certainly priceless.”
“But from the perspective of the ‘Door to Truth,’ diamonds are often just weeds.”
“And alchemists who cannot provide sufficient value reliably encounter alchemical failures, and at worst, they are consumed by the ‘Door to Truth’ as greedy people.”
“Of course, as Else Kevin said, even the ‘Door to Truth’ sees the value of things constantly changing. Therefore, a secret technique—the ‘Eye of Truth’—is needed!”
“The ‘Eye of Truth’ is a secret technique developed by powerful alchemists after establishing a connection with the ‘Door to Truth.'”
“It allows us to evaluate the value of things from the perspective of the ‘Door to Truth.'”
“The closer the connection with the ‘Door to Truth,’ the higher the precision of the ‘Eye of Truth.'”
“Our main topic next will be mastering the ‘Eye of Truth.'”
…
Professor Kazel’s teaching style has always been very straightforward.
Apart from occasionally interjecting a few jokes that catch students off guard, he handles the focus of the lesson extremely well.
Whether it’s through examples to warn students or through future forecasts to create anticipation, he does it effortlessly.
For example, seeing the students’ lack of interest in the “Eye of Truth,” he directly gave several examples and vividly described several major historical alchemical accidents.
From the death of an alchemist to the downfall of a glorious nation, most alchemical accidents caused by failed alchemy were due to inaccurate value assessments.
Attempting to open the “Door to Truth” without paying the full price was a suicidal act.
These historical accidents finally made the students alert.
…
With thirty minutes left before the end of the first “Alchemy Class,” Professor Kazel stopped lecturing and put down the textbook, saying, “Our theoretical lecture for today will end here. Next, I will lead you all into the ‘Door to Truth’ to experience ‘Truth.'”
His casual words stirred up a storm among the students.
The second and third years took a moment to react, while the fourth and fifth years immediately began to chatter.
Even though they had limited contact with alchemy, knowledge accumulates in various ways.
In the midst of the commotion, Vini Scarlet suddenly raised her hand high.
When Professor Kazel called her to ask a question, her tone was even more excited than she had ever been on the dueling stage.
“Professor Kazel, can we really enter the ‘Door to Truth’?”
Professor Kazel smiled slightly, “It’s not difficult.”
…
Not difficult?
The classroom erupted instantly, with students’ exclamations growing louder.
Dark pressed his hand on the textbook, trying to hide his shock.
He had always held Professor Kazel in high regard, yet he had underestimated him.
How many alchemists spent their entire lives trying to touch the “Door to Truth,” even at the cost of their lives.
But Professor Kazel not only touched the “Door to Truth,” he could even bring others in!
Anyone with even a little knowledge could understand its terror.
This was akin to someone understanding advanced calculus without knowing multiplication tables—yet he truly could do it!
[Greedy +1]
Ignoring the indicators passing in front of him, Dark raised his hand.
Professor Kazel found him amidst the crowd and pointed his wand at him.
Dark understood and stood up to ask, “Professor, what can we gain by entering the ‘Door to Truth’?”
Professor Kazel kindly replied, “To feel ‘Truth,’ one must touch ‘Truth.’ After leaving a mark inside the ‘Door to Truth,’ it becomes easier to build a connection and receive a response from the ‘Door to Truth.’
And only by building a connection with the ‘Door to Truth’ can one open the ‘Eye of Truth.’
Of course, this is just one practical effect. Everyone gains different insights after entering the ‘Door to Truth’; you will gradually discover them once you go in.”
After getting a satisfactory answer, Dark sat down, but immediately another student raised their hand and asked, “Professor, isn’t the ‘Door to Truth’ unsafe?”
Professor Kazel smiled, “Follow me, and you’ll be safe.”
…
The students, suppressing their excitement and fear, continued to raise their hands to ask questions.
Professor Kazel patiently answered each one until ten minutes before class ended, when he finally quieted the room and said with a smile, “After entering the ‘Door to Truth,’ you have five minutes to experience it. If you are fortunate enough to gain the favor of the ‘Door to Truth,’ perhaps you might even get answers from ‘Truth.’ Prepare by resting your heads on the desk now, yes, exactly like that.”
The students responded, placing their arms on the desks and resting their heads.
Dark rested his head and noticed Eudora sneaking a look at him, so he winked at her.
Eudora’s face flushed red, burying her head in her arms.
And Professor Kazel…
The voice entered everyone’s ears: “Close your eyes, listen to my voice. Even if there is no change in the surroundings, do not be surprised. The truth resides in the heart, and the Door to Truth will open within.”
The classroom gradually quieted down, and the minds of the Young Magi slowly calmed.
Under Professor Kazel’s guidance, complex thoughts gradually settled, sinking towards the center of their minds.
A Mana Card appeared in Professor Kazel’s hand.
The edges of the Mana Card shimmered with seven-colored glass-like light, and on its surface was carved a door twisted like a vortex.
This was the “Door to Truth”!
A masterpiece combining Alchemy and Mana Technology.
There was no second Mana Card like this in the world.
Professor Kazel infused Mana into the Mana Card of the “Door to Truth.” The door on the card began to rotate, and the entire scene gradually turned into chaos, ultimately leaving only a single pitch-black dot.
At almost the same time, a similar black dot appeared on the ceiling.
This black dot rotated in reverse, unfolding into a chaotic Golden Gate.
The entire classroom was bathed in golden light, shimmering brightly.
Professor Kazel slowly closed his eyes, while the students’ eyes opened in their hearts.
…
A droplet of water fell rapidly from an extremely high place.
Dark Demon suddenly opened his eyes.
“The surroundings have no sound.”
“The surroundings have no color.”
The most direct sensations for humans were sounds and light, followed by other elements such as smell.
Dark was certain he was no longer in the classroom, but he was still in the classroom.
The entire classroom lost its colors, turning a ghastly white.
Students lying on desks, the professor standing on the podium, birds flying past the window, and blooming flowers—all vanished.
Though this differed from what he imagined about “entering the Door to Truth,” he did not panic.
“Even if there is no change in the surroundings, do not be surprised.”
“It hasn’t changed, but it’s not completely unchanged.”
Dark stood up from his seat.
The whole world was white, even he himself was pale.
Except for him, nothing else could move, giving the feeling that time had stopped.
He walked out of his seat, instinctively heading toward the podium, but nothing changed.
“So where is the ‘Door to Truth’?”
Dark stood on the podium, facing the students who were deep in thought.
He was uncertain whether only he experienced this, or if everyone was experiencing it.
He had expected his consciousness to appear before a massive gate, and crossing that gate would lead to the “Truth.”
Even if he couldn’t grasp the mysteries of “Truth,” just leaving a trace behind to open the “Eye of Truth” would suffice.
But the “Door to Truth” seemed to play a joke on him?
He turned around and walked to the door, trying to open it.
The door opened smoothly.
He hesitated for a moment, extending his foot slightly.
When his toe touched the ground, he jumped out abruptly.
There was no resistance.
So he started walking down the corridor.
Still no sounds, no colors, no smells, no moving life except for him.
It was as if he had entered a world where time had stopped, a pale world.
He even left the castle, spending far more than five minutes, yet found nothing.
No “Door to Truth.”
No “Truth.”
Nothing.
…
Unbeknownst to him,
Dark had returned to the classroom, back to his original seat when he first opened his eyes.
He sat down again, then lay on the desk, keeping the same posture as before, closing his eyes, expecting the world to regain its colors when he opened them again.
But it didn’t.
He looked at the still pale, colorless classroom, and a surge of extreme wrath suddenly welled up inside him.
The frequent flashing of “+1 Wrath” in front of his eyes made him sense something was amiss.
But that rage was uncontrollable.
He tried to activate the “Technique of the Shadow God” in this consciousness world.
But he couldn’t move anything.
This consciousness world’s structure was terrifyingly solid;
Professor Kazel’s words silenced her.
As for why Professor Kazel said that,
it was probably based on some rules like “heavenly secrets should not be revealed.”
Or perhaps, once spoken, there would be an additional cost to pay.
This cost might not be significant.
But of course, not paying it is better if possible.
However, if both knew, then it wouldn’t count as “revealing” anyway.
Dark was more concerned about how to explain to Emma—he had peeped at her “Truth”?
…
“After returning, digest today’s insights well. We will explain the structure of the ‘Eye of Truth’ in our next class,” Professor Kazel left the classroom after the end-of-class bell rang but did not assign any homework.
But the thirty students in the classroom were clearly no longer thinking about homework.
Some had flushed faces, seemingly eager to share their experiences inside the “Door to Truth.”
Others immediately took out their notes and started writing.
Some looked around curiously, their faces clearly showing interest in others’ experiences.
It wasn’t until several minutes later that someone finally walked out of the classroom.
Afterwards, the students gradually dispersed, and fewer people remained in the classroom.
Dark waited until half of them had left before getting up. Yudora had long packed up but remained seated.
“It’s time to go.” Dark reminded her helplessly.
“Oh. Where are you going?” Yudora hurriedly asked.
Dark smiled, “Should be heading to the clubroom, right?”
“Eh?” Yudora immediately showed obvious disappointment.
Dark’s clubroom was atop the Spiral Bell Tower outside the castle; it was impossible to walk the same route with her.
She originally thought she could take this opportunity to walk alone with Dark for a bit.
Such days when Diana and Rose weren’t around Dark were rare.
“I’ll go first then.”
Dark waved at her and turned to leave the classroom.
Yudora couldn’t help but clench her fist and comfort herself, “There will be other chances!”
…
After leaving the classroom, Dark didn’t head toward the clubroom.
He quickly found Emma’s back and deliberately waved in front of her, making Emma twitch uncontrollably. Finally, she couldn’t resist stopping to grab the windowsill and look outside, and only then did he calmly leave.
There was no other intention; he just enjoyed seeing her wanting to speak but unable to do so, earning some pleasure.
【Wrath -1】
…
“This trip through the ‘Door to Truth’ was truly a loss.”
“Forget it, I’ll make ‘Wrath’ the next subject of study.”
Dark glanced at the ‘Wrath’ indicator indifferently.
‘Wrath’ had not exceeded one hundred, still within the margin of error.
He adjusted his shoulder bag and headed towards the Spiral Bell Tower.
Climbing the tower, pushing open the door to the clubroom, Dark suddenly frowned and saw Little Dak hugging and telling stories to Tiny Dak on the sofa!
“Ditto…”
Ditto even imitated his youthful voice very accurately, and the storytelling tone was quite similar, captivating.
The guhu bird, having shed its feathers again, held its arm and chuckled, not knowing whether it was playing on a single bar or listening to the story.
Only Rose was diligently doing homework on the other side of the clubroom, while Diana had yet to return.
“Class is over?” Rose looked up and asked.
“Yeah.” Dark
……
