Chapter 527 Invitation
When the underground passage reached its end, a copper-colored door came into view. It bore deep hues and worn edges that gleamed faintly, but what caught the eye more were the chaotic scratches that seemed to have been left by fierce battles involving swords and guns. This made one wonder about the tumultuous events that might have occurred within this heavily fortified structure.
Click-click-click—
The sound of a winch tightening. Then, the heavy door slowly opened, revealing thick, polished teeth at the bottom. According to Lolan Hill’s estimation, the door was about 0.8 meters thick, and its material was almost entirely made of mountain bronze. The internal structure was crafted using some secret technique, making it nearly impossible for even a Sequence 8 entity to break through without spending considerable time.
After they entered, the first thing they noticed were six guards on either side of the door. They wore extremely heavy armor, with only their eyes showing through narrow slits. One of their arms was as thick as Lolan Hill’s waist, though her own waist was notably slender.
Next to catch the young lady’s attention was a massive silver disc overhead, radiating white light. Upon closer inspection, intricate patterns could be seen within it.
This disc appeared to be some sort of instrument, emitting faint silver lines that swept over the three entrants before illuminating them with a burst of white light.
At this moment, the six black-armored guards standing guard at the passage finally stepped aside to clear the way.
As they moved forward, the door behind them slowly closed, leading them into a hall. The walls were embedded with large white gems that emitted cold, white light, illuminating the entire hall.
Around the hall were seven iron doors leading to unknown directions, all tightly shut.
“Miss Lohil, please wait here for a moment,” one of them said, then took out a key and inserted it into a door. With a secret incantation, the door opened, revealing a deep, dark passage leading to an unknown subterranean location.
Before coming here, Lolan Hill had thought that Lord Kewus wanted to understand her perception of the chaos disaster. However, as she entered the building, she felt a slight tension.
It wasn’t due to distrust of the Holy Land, but rather an unease stemming from a lack of security. After all, a true gentleman doesn’t stand under a dangerous wall.
She gently touched the butterfly hairpin by her ear. The magic left by Crystalina resonated distantly in her senses, providing some comfort.
If things turned violent, her best bet would be to use the hairpin to save herself. She would then take out the pocket watch given by Chris, and call for help—specifically, waking up Ctea to protect her.
If that didn’t work, she could only resort to using the magic mirror to seek help from Chris and the Night Mistress. Given Chris’s capabilities, she could summon four or five witches in no time, thus breaking through the defenses of the Holy Land.
In the domain, there shouldn’t be much of a problem, the only thing to consider is that angel whose existence is uncertain.
However, this would mean owing a great favor, which could lead to various complications later on. If not absolutely necessary, she thought it would be better to just call Cedi over to handle the situation.
In the hall, as the two waited quietly, the black-robed person assumed that the young lady was too nervous to speak, after all, most people who came here were like that.
But in reality, Lolan Hill was thinking about how to break through this place.
A few minutes later, the iron door opened, and the aforementioned black-robed person stepped out.
Is he Kewus? The young lady thought, then watched as this person stopped in front of her.
“Hello, Miss Lohil, please follow me. This time, we want to test your perception of the Chaos Phantom, and then ask you to help with the search.”
Seeing that the silver-haired girl dressed as a nun was motionless, Kewus thought she was afraid and worried, and had no choice but to explain.
Although he himself wasn’t concerned about the reputation of the Judgment Bureau, considering that she came from Emanas, it wouldn’t be good to force her. If he didn’t explain, it might make her feel more resistance, which would affect the subsequent mission.
“Alright.” The young lady nodded slightly, coming back to her senses from her previous thoughts, and followed this high-ranking figure of the Judgment Bureau into the passage.
Let’s take it one step at a time for now; the impression the Holy Land has given her so far is still quite good.
The walls still emitted cold light from the gems, and the passages on both sides were tightly locked iron doors, making it impossible to see the internal structure. As the four of them went deeper, they finally entered a large open door.
It seemed to have been prepared in advance; three black-robed personnel stood around, and the room was quite spacious, about the size of a basketball court. However, what was strange was that there was a curtain in the middle, separating the things behind it.
“Miss Lohil, can you perceive how many people are behind the curtain?” Kewus began asking immediately after bringing the girl into the room, not wanting to waste any unnecessary waiting time.
Lolan Hill closed her eyes slightly, her perception spreading like ripples, and the scene behind the curtain appeared in her mind. There were eight figures tied to iron racks, three of whom were already dead, one was half-dead, two were asleep, one had their mouth sealed and was struggling, and another remained silent.
Among these people, one of the three who were already dead had been affected by the Chaos Phantom. Among the five who were still alive, the one remaining silent seemed like a mist, with a peculiar distortion in his soul and consciousness.
But this was not the end. As the young lady’s perception continued to extend backward, passing through a thick wall three meters thick, there were still four more people behind. These four people were not evenly distributed, with the farthest one being about 40 meters away from Lolan Hill, and somewhat blurred in the girl’s perception.
After a moment, Lolan Hill opened her eyes and began to narrate.
Behind the curtain, eight people were present; three of them were already dead. Among the two who were related to the Chaos Phantom, she raised her wrist and pointed in two directions successively.
“Very good,” Khus’s voice under the mask was still deep and calm, but compared to before, one could detect a hint of joy.
“However, behind these eight people, that is, behind the wall, there are four more individuals. One of them is problematic,” the young lady continued.
“Which one?” Khus sat on an iron chair beside him and tapped the armrest slightly.
“The one bound upside down to the stone pillar,” Lolan Hill slowly spoke about her discovery.
“Truly impressive. How did you manage that, Miss Lohil?” Khus looked up.
“Perhaps it’s a gift,” she explained.
“What a wonderful gift. This makes me even more curious about that bold rumor.”
“However,” he changed his tone.
“You are indeed the purest soul I have ever seen.”
“According to the intelligence we obtained at Emanas, you can freely switch between the Angel Sequence and the Demon Sequence, and you also have another name, Lolan.”
“When we tried to learn more about your origins and past, some influential figures obstructed us with subtle means, cutting off the leads.”
“Certainly, you don’t need to be afraid. I am not threatening you. Rather, I want to convey that you don’t need to be so cautious. Even if you show something unusual, we won’t be surprised or suspicious of you.”
“A person’s life from birth to death is a long, dynamic process of change. It’s hard to evaluate with just two words, good or evil. Our Judgment Department doesn’t concern itself with personal inner good or evil.”
“The only criterion for judgment is what a person has done. As long as they haven’t crossed those insurmountable red lines, in our Judgment Department’s view, they are trivial matters.”
“Compared to those who use live subjects for experiments, participate in forbidden research, torment souls, become corrupt and twisted, or even betray humanity by joining the Chaos side, the small matters you’ve hidden are almost endearing like a little white rabbit.”
“Therefore, we have no ill intentions toward you. On the contrary, we wish to invite you to join us in future searches and captures.”
“Furthermore, we know that Miss Lohil recently wanted to look up some church records but lacked the permission.”
“If you’re willing to help us with this small favor, the Judgment Department will grant you high access rights to peruse the scriptures in the secret chambers. Not only that, but even some of our department’s confidential materials would be available for your review.”
“Compared to those ancient and blurry records, our department’s records might be more truthful and brutal.”
“What does Miss Lohil think about this?”
