Chapter 5

Episode 5: Homeroom Teacher

When all the classes for the day ended, Shion headed to the faculty document storage located at the edge of the main school building.

That day, he had been asked by his homeroom teacher, Rina Restia, to “come to the document storage after school to help carry some documents.” It was to assist her in preparing for the class she would teach the next day.

Shion often helped Restia with her class preparations, even though he wasn’t a class representative or officially assigned as her support staff.

However, being personally favored by Restia, Shion frequently received such requests from her.

There was a reason Restia liked Shion.

Restia’s class was on plant-related magic, a subject at Crawford Magic Academy that didn’t involve practical or academic exams.

Moreover, Plant Magic wasn’t particularly popular compared to other fields, and there were few professions that dealt with plant-related magic. As a result, most students didn’t take her class seriously.

During Restia’s class, most students either studied for other subjects or simply dozed off at their desks.

Amidst this, Shion Kurosaki took her class seriously.

His knowledge of magic was fairly extensive, and he didn’t really need to pay close attention to most classes.

However, this only applied to the magic classes he had already been interested in and studied before.

He was only interested in magic that he deemed useful for combat, basic elemental magic, or magic that looked cool. He never bothered to learn other types of magic on his own.

And plant-related magic had been outside his interests until he enrolled in the academy.

The reason was simple: it just didn’t seem cool enough.

But deep down, Shion had a personality that enjoyed learning new magic. After attending Restia’s plant-related magic class for the first time, he began to take it seriously.

Restia always taught with sincerity and enthusiasm.

Even though most students didn’t listen, she never cut corners. She made her lessons easy to understand, engaging, and interesting.

And when students asked questions about the class content afterward, she would be visibly delighted that someone had shown interest in her teaching.

Shion liked people who were passionate about something, even if they weren’t recognized by others, and who took pride in what they did.

Even if society didn’t value it much, the magic Restia taught—such as “magic to grow and multiply various plants” and “alchemy of plants for medical ingredients”—was undoubtedly useful to people.

That’s why Shion took her class seriously. He believed Restia’s class was worth taking seriously.

Though he kept a composed expression, he listened intently, took notes, and visited Restia after class to ask about things he didn’t understand.

Since no other student visited Restia to discuss her class, Shion naturally became the student in Class C who interacted with her the most.

…Once, he even told Restia, “I like your class, sensei.”

For Restia, who had always taught diligently despite being ignored by her students and receiving no recognition, Shion’s words were a tremendous comfort. That day, she even teared up when she got home.

Because of this, Shion, who had the most interaction with Restia and shared a mutual understanding with her, often received various errands from her.

He wasn’t obligated to accept her requests, but Shion always gladly did so.
