Chapter 120 Like Gods
Boom… Boom…
Rumble—!
On the battered northern city wall, the clamor of battle spread from the intense explosions and surging flames. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky. The clash between holy light and infernal fire continued endlessly. Countless holy spears and fireballs crisscrossed through the air. The night wind howled, carrying the stench of blood from the battlefield into the city.
“Judgment Punch!”
In the dark sky, a knight with a fierce face roared in the halo of light. His massive figure crashed like a meteor onto the city wall, sending heretics who were attempting to cast fireballs at the elite knights flying away. Blood splattered through the air. Several figures tumbled off the wall. Intense fighting erupted instantly. Isaac, bald-headed, was like a tiger among sheep, slashing his way from the west wall to the east wall, tearing enemies apart with his bare hands as he went. Not a single piece of armor remained unscathed in his wake.
He shouted amidst the blood, “A bunch of scum! I’ll devour you all—”
On the northeastern side of the north wall, I stood atop the tower. Blue radiance shone around me. The surging frost mist rushed out like a tide, engulfing the heretics who dared to charge forward, turning them into ice statues. Over a hundred ice spears hovering above my head shot out at an almost invisible speed when I waved my hands, shattering the ice statues and piercing through the heads of the enemies. Groans echoed within the halo of light.
“Caw—”
From above, a black raven let out a loud caw, spreading its wings and circling before flying toward the southern part of the city. I looked up briefly.
The one who could create fog… seems to have hidden himself?
Is he afraid?
I activated the orderly force within me. Sharp ice spears jutted out horizontally from the parapet in various spots. In an instant, dozens of meters of heretics on the wall were impaled on the ice spears, immobilized, and quickly died in the frosty currents. Below the western wall, hundreds of elite knights galloped in through the massive gap, charging into the city with irresistible force, trampling over the struggling enemies, crushing bodies, and stepping over severed limbs, advancing northward through burning flames.
Among countless heretics, some began to flee—perhaps because the enemy had failed to organize effective defense. The expected fog never appeared. Breaching the city… seemed easier than anticipated.
The knights in the rear lines had already formed their ranks. Next, they would launch a charge, breaking into Alertheon City through the gaps and gates. The resistance of the heretics was already descending into chaos…
Bang—
Ice pillars shot up beneath my feet. Using the thrust, I leaped into the air, dodging a fireball. Looking up at the direction where the goat cheese was flying, I fell, landing on a roof, then jumped again, soaring over the city toward the south.
Whoosh!
Whoosh—
Fireballs kept coming from below, from the streets and houses. I dodged them one by one, not pausing in my steps. Strong winds whistled past my ears. My blood-stained skirt fluttered wildly. The cloak behind me flapped in the wind. Frost mist trailing behind me as I moved at high speed, leaving a glittering trail in the increasingly dimming sky.
Houses below raced backward in my vision. Among the shadowy figures in the streets, it was hard to see any living commoners in their rough clothes. Only the gruesome, scattered corpses remained.
The dead lay in the alleys and buried under rubble. Flames raged on the ground, rooftops, huge stones, and broken tiles, burning fiercely on people’s bodies. Blood mixed with mud, staining the streets. Naked women, ravaged beyond sight, lay dead in such filthy muck.
Occasionally, in the flickering flames, a heretic would lift their head and let out a roar like a beast at me.
A bunch of heartless bastards…
Thump thump thump thump—
Fierce frost mist spewed from my palms, striking down all the heretics below, engulfing their arrogant forms and extinguishing the infernal flames. Those bodies were also frozen solid. Standing on the rooftop, I silently observed for a moment, then followed the path of the raven, leaping away through the burning houses.
…………
In a dim alley slightly south of the northern city wall, a young knight named Barry struggled to his feet, one hand supporting the wall. His blood-soaked face slowly lifted in the dim night illuminated by flickering flames.
“You hear…”
From the northern city wall obscured by walls, the cries of combat and the muffled sounds of explosions faintly reached this side. Light flickered in golden hues in the sky.
The light poured over the city, falling upon the raging fires and ruins, casting an almost miraculous glow.
“Reinforcements have arrived…”
Lilith stood there, stunned, gazing at the golden light rising in the north, far away. For a moment, she couldn’t believe her eyes, unsure if what she saw was real or just a dreamlike illusion. She watched as the scene unfolded, hearing the distant explosions grow louder and closer. Tears unknowingly rolled down her cheeks.
“Reinforcements have arrived! It’s the First Knight Order! They’ve broken through the beasts’ lines and are storming into the city! Ahahaha—”
She heard the young knight’s ecstatic laughter. This boy, who was nearly three years younger than her and always seemed nervous when talking to her, suddenly looked radiant. His originally dull eyes now shone brightly. He seemed to have gone mad, dancing for a moment before turning and tightly hugging her.
“They’re here, she’s here too! Lilith, she’s here—”
Barry held her very tightly.
“You don’t need to be afraid anymore, you don’t need to be afraid anymore… Those damned beasts will soon be dead… they’re all going to die…”
Lilith caught her breath.
Still immersed in disbelief, her head spinning, her ears ringing, feeling the tightening arm around her waist, she could hardly react. She only felt the cold armor on Barry’s body and the pungent smell of blood. Only after a long while did she realize she needed to push him away. But as she heard the young knight’s choked words, somehow, her hands that were meant to push forward froze in mid-air.
“Barry…”
Whoosh—
Suddenly, a dazzling blue meteor streaked across the night sky, which had been blurred by tears.
That was…
The meteor flew swiftly toward the southern part of the city, breaking through the air with a dull roar that still sounded piercing even from hundreds of meters away. Lilith stared fixedly, her mind not catching up. She wondered if this was some powerful divine miracle, but the next moment, she noticed Barry lifting his head, his whole body trembling.
“That’s… my sister…”
The young knight’s voice trembled, his tone shifting rapidly from initial doubt to unwavering certainty.
“That’s my sister!”
He released his hold on her, dragging his battered body onto a shattered wall. Turning back, he pointed to the meteor in the distance, shouting loudly, “She’s here! Lilith, did you see it!? That’s Sir Silviana, the Pope’s Knight! My sister!”
The young knight’s eyes turned red as he shouted.
“Brother Mor!”
He roared desperately into the night sky.
“My sister is here, did you see it!”
“She’s here—”
“Do you…”
“See it…”
In the next instant, the meteor abruptly changed direction and accelerated, like a powerful predator sensing its prey. With a dense series of sonic booms, it dived towards the city below—
Then, it seemed to illuminate the entire great city.
Crimson flames and azure frost intertwined as if the heavens were collapsing, the collision sound yet to reach them, an unparalleled light already bloomed from behind the skyscrapers, where the meteor landed. From hundreds of meters away, Lilith felt her eyes sting, instinctively raising her hand to shield herself. Then, the shockwave hit her ears with a sudden impact.
Rumble rumble rumble—
The ground beneath her shook, strong winds forcing her eyes shut. Lilith staggered backward, barely maintaining her balance. The shock was like a massive wave crashing down, her scalp tingling. She faintly heard Barry shouting something, but couldn’t make out the words. As the impact subsided slightly, fear and trembling suddenly swept over her, causing her to involuntarily hug her arms tightly.
“Aaaaaaahhhhh—”
She could hardly hear her own scream.
Dazedly, the young knight descended from the wall, wrapping his arms around her shoulders, leading her behind the wall. His lips moved, seemingly asking if she was alright. Lilith was disoriented, unable to respond. She thought of Barry’s words.
That was her sister…
That meteor… was a person.
A girl…
Yet, she seemed like a deity.
