Chapter 49: To Our Passed 2005
Mei Lijun and Xiang Xiaxia briefly discussed the pros and cons of moving. Mei Lijun had thought his wife might resist, considering they had always been very affectionate and would worry about each other even when apart.
Xiang Xiaxia was quite controlling; though she was gentle to her children, she believed men would become bad with money. Thus, Mei Lijun always stayed poor.
In recent years, she understood her husband’s hardships and relaxed her control somewhat.
”Go if you must… Baishe City isn’t too far away, and you can still come back on weekends.”
”Um, there’s something else I want to discuss, about this matter…”
Mei Lijun sat obediently on the sofa, fidgeting like a child.
”Since we won’t be moving or buying a house, we still have some savings. I want to come back more often on weekends to be with you and the kids. But my old motorcycle can’t go on highways, and taking the bus is inconvenient. It takes a lot of time and costs money…”
”Stop.”
Xiang Xiaxia stopped Mei Lijun from continuing.
”Are you thinking you should buy a car now that you’re a section chief?”
”Mama! Mama! Let Dad buy a car!”
Mei Fang said innocently, “I want to see Dad on weekends and feel the warmth of paternal love!”
”You little rascal!”
Xiang Xiaxia pushed Mei Fang’s forehead with her index finger.
You naughty boy, always coming up with schemes…
Upon reflection, Mei Lijun’s warning might have been made up on the spot.
Mei Fang likely used the car as a lure to get support from Dad.
Although the story might be fabricated, the logic stands: taking Mei Ya to an unfamiliar city is risky.
”Look, even our son agrees. What do you say, dear?”
”Ms. Mei! Ms. Mei! If you need money for a car, I can lend you some!”
Xia Yuan took out her small savings book from her wallet, which she brought today for the plan to reclaim something.
She handed the book to Mei Lijun and Xiang Xiaxia, “I have six thousand yuan in my savings account. It could help ease your burden.”
”Wow, you carry so much money? Let me see…”
Mei Lijun checked Xia Yuan’s savings book and confirmed he hadn’t miscounted. He felt puzzled about life.
”Yuan Yuan, I envy you… You have more money than me.”
”Don’t embarrass yourself in front of the kids…”
Xiang Xiaxia tapped her father’s head and put away the savings book, giving Xia Yuan serious advice, “Yuan Yuan, don’t show this to others easily. If someone with ill intentions sees it, they might take your money.”
”It’s okay, I’ve only shown it to you and Mei Fang.”
Xia Yuan felt a bittersweet smile, as if spring flowers bloomed, “If it’s not enough, I’ll find a way! Uncle Mei is alone in Baishe City, Auntie Mei, please take good care of him!”
Though your support makes me happy, you little girl, your smile seems pitying…
Xiang Xiaxia sighed, “Since you’re going to Baishe City alone, I will definitely buy you a car. But I’m worried you might go wild once you have it and I’m not around.”
”Ms. Mei! Uncle Mei is not that kind of person!”
Lin You Xi also supported Mei Lijun, “Every time I eat at your place, Uncle Mei comes home on time. Clearly, he loves Auntie Mei and cares about you.”
”Look, even the kids understand this better than us adults.”
Mei Lijun and Xiang Xiaxia felt a bit embarrassed.
”Alright, alright, let’s buy one!” Xiang Xiaxia said seriously, “But remember, you’re buying a car for what reason.”
”To make it easier to come home, visit my wonderful son, daughter, and —”
”Stop being disgusting, look where you are.”
”Hahaha!”
Lin You Xi and Xia Yuan laughed heartily, and so did Mei Lijun.
The first Xiaoli car for a man, I finally meet you!
Xiang Xiaxia was also delighted, relieved of a heavy burden.
Little Mei Ya was happy in her sleep, having sweet dreams;
As for Mei Fang himself…
More than happiness, he felt a sense of gratitude.
Children can do many things.
Often, due to family environment and education, they lack experience and courage, waiting for adults to arrange their lives.
Those few who have such courage are often seen as troublemakers.
Most of the time, they don’t know what to do, even unaware of what they’ve lost.
Childhood often passes by in a blur, but it’s usually a carefree time.
At the end of 2005, Allen released a new album, “November’s Flute.”
Many songs in this album became timeless classics.
This was also the most beautiful youth memory for Mei Fang’s generation.
Unlike before, Mei Fang now had companions with shared memories.
[Your hair like snow]
[Melancholy the parting]
[I burn incense, moved by whom]
[Invite the moon]
[Let memories be pure]
[Love under the moonlight is perfect]
[Your hair like snow]
[Tears flying]
[I wait for someone to grow old]
[Red dust, drunk]
[Hazy days]
[I use no regrets]
[Carve a stone to love forever]
[Lala lala, lala lala, lala lala]
”Lala lala, lala lala, ah lala lala…”
”Copper mirror reflects innocence, tying a ponytail, if you challenge me, I’ll drink with you this lifetime.”
After humming a song, Mei Fang put down his black pen, removed his MP3 headphones, and took off his thick coat to look in the mirror.
In the mirror, he no longer had baby fat. Due to his sudden death in his previous life, he had always taken care of his health, so his face wasn’t too fat or thin, his forehead full, skin fair, with a hint of elegance.
But am I really that bad at singing?
Mei Fang stroked his growing beard and then touched his Adam’s apple, feeling the growth.
Now in puberty, he had a throat lump, his voice deepened, almost magnetic.
It shouldn’t be that bad.
But I still won’t sing in front of her.
After all, I’m a petty and vengeful man…
Just as he was thinking, the door to Mei Fang’s room suddenly opened, startling him.
”Afang, what are you doing? We agreed to go shopping today! School starts soon, hurry up!”
Seeing Mei Fang flustered, Xia Yuan asked curiously, “Wait… Are you admiring yourself?”
”Knock before entering! You two, how many times must I say it? We’re not kids anymore.”
”I knocked, but you were listening to music.”
Lin You Xi inserted her hand into her pocket, skillfully manipulating Mei Fang’s MP3 and putting on his headphones to listen to music.
”Stop fooling around, You Xi, you didn’t knock at all?”
”If you don’t do strange things, why be afraid of others knocking?”
Lin You Xi rolled her eyes at Mei Fang, then closed her eyes to continue listening. Mei Fang was about to argue when Xia Yuan started swinging her arm around him.
”Come on, Afang! Let’s go!”
”In this cold weather? It’s snowing in the south, it’s better to stay home! Or you and You Xi can go together?”
Xia Yuan shook her head, then earnestly said, “Three people are more fun! And someone needs to carry the bags.”
”So I’m just a tool…”
Xia Yuan hugged Mei Fang’s shoulder, carefree and close.
”Haha… Because Afang is our most reliable childhood friend!”
Xia Yuan displayed a radiant smile, while Lin You Xi closed her eyes, lost in the music, a faint smile on her face.
Time flies.
Three years, or less, passed quietly.
It is early spring of 2008 now.
Mei Fang, Xia Yuan, and Lin You Xi are around 12 years old.
This is their last year as elementary school students.
And the first year as middle school students.
Today’s early release is because I wanted to upload middle school character designs, but there was no related chapter.
There will be no update tonight!
