Chapter 476: Magnetic Pole Swordsman
“Jenna, she is the daughter of Lund.”
Before she could respond, a mercenary who had defected spoke up.
“Oh, Jenna, what a lovely name,” said the swordsman with a smile, his eyes slowly scanning the girl.
“I never imagined that the man like Lund, as sharp as a sword, would have such a cute daughter.”
“Would you like to join us? Considering your age and being Lund’s daughter, I can take charge and offer you two hundred extraordinary gold coins right here and now.”
He laid out generous terms, causing those around him to look at the girl with envious eyes. This was exactly what the swordsman wanted; he aimed to use this envy to lower the girl’s resistance. Once she joined them, her father would surely not abandon her, and they would come over together.
To gain Lund’s willing cooperation with just two hundred gold coins would be quite a bargain, even if he had to explain it to Lord Shute later. The lord would commend rather than scold him.
Only about a hundred people remained standing in the courtyard, all loyal followers of Lund and comrades-in-arms through thick and thin over the years.
They were unwilling to betray Lund and join the enemy camp, but they also found it hard to kill their greedy teammates, as they were all fellow villagers and acquaintances.
Now, their eyes turned to the leader’s daughter. If she joined the enemy, Lund would inevitably accept Shute’s offer.
Under everyone’s gaze, Jenna felt a slight tension and slowly responded.
“But, I refuse.”
The girl’s youthful voice echoed in the quiet courtyard.
Jenna wasn’t like the ordinary mercenaries. After experiencing the vast world and learning about its history, her knowledge and insight made her clearly recognize the consequences of her agreement.
If she joined, her father would inevitably get involved, becoming a collaborator for Lord Shute, much like the tyrants she encountered on her journey, doing cruel deeds until they became pests in the field.
Once one sees through the essence of things, it’s hard to deceive them with mere words.
These mercenaries thought they were merely changing masters and getting more money.
But at this moment, Jenna knew they were walking down a path of aiding evil, becoming vicious dogs.
After all, mercenaries were driven by money and had no faith. Asking them to pursue morality was a luxury.
Seeing the girl’s firm refusal, the crowd in the courtyard calmed slightly, unlike before. The swordsman sitting at the gate slowly withdrew his smile.
“It seems the young lady is still too young, not thinking carefully about the benefits.”
The swordsman stood up slowly from his seat, rubbing his fingers, which made a cracking sound.
“Since Miss Jenna is so determined, we’ll have to resort to some force.” He raised his hand, and a group of mercenaries holding halberds stepped forward.
These men wore face-concealing armor, with heavy cuirasses beneath their red and yellow cloaks.
“Do not harm the young lady, attack!”
He waved his hand, and the group surged into the courtyard. The clashing sounds of heavy armor filled the air, followed by metallic clashes.
Though these halberd-wielding warriors were only around sixty in number, each was a seasoned elite at Sequence 2. Under their attacks, casualties among the courtyard’s defenders quickly mounted.
Heavy halberds slashed shoulders, splitting the shoulder guards and shattering bones, spraying blood and dyeing their clothes red. Then came a crushing blow to the helmets, knocking opponents unconscious or dead.
Under the swordsman’s orders from behind, these elite halberd wielders showed mercy, refraining from finishing off those who lost their combat ability. They still hoped to recruit Lund and did not want to kill too many.
Of course, letting the courtyard’s occupants go was not an option either; otherwise, Lund would surely flee. Only by capturing them all could they use them as leverage to recruit Lund.
As the fighting broke out in the courtyard, Jenna drew her blade.
The finely patterned longsword reflected dazzling white light under the sun, then danced in the air, forming silver lines as it cut through numerous halberds and wounded many enemies.
Seeing his subordinates start to suffer casualties, the swordsman could no longer stand idly. He drew his sword and met her head-on.
The long, heavy sword swept through the air, cutting with a circular arc toward her. Jenna tried to dodge, but her longsword suddenly became uncontrollable, slowing her movements. She had no choice but to meet the strike head-on.
The force transmitted through the blade numbed Jenna’s hand, and the subsequent sword withdrawal almost caused her to lose grip.
If someone familiar with the swordsman were present, they might explain the situation. This swordsman practiced the Extraordinary Profession of the War Sequence 5 – Magnetic Pole Swordsman, possessing the ability to manipulate magnetic forces.
Such a combat profession was very useful at low sequences because most opponents’ weapons were metal and had some degree of magnetism. By manipulating attraction or repulsion, he could easily expose their weaknesses and deliver fatal blows.
“Hmm, young lady, your longsword is quite something,” the swordsman observed the small nicks on his sword, looking at Jenna’s snow-silver longsword.
“Could you tell me the name of this sword?”
“Mountain Thrush,” Jenna slowly uttered these words, her eyes serious as she looked at her opponent.
This longsword and the ‘Gray Thrush’ in Bumansa’s hands were both crafted by the same master and stored in Emanas before being distributed as tournament rewards.
Although her Extraordinary Profession was above average at Sequence 3 and she could easily handle ordinary Sequence 4 opponents with her longsword, facing a Sequence 5 swordsman was much harder. After all, geniuses like Lolan Hill and Bumansa were few and far between.
It seemed she needed to prepare to escape.
Jenna glanced around the surroundings, but her movements became more aggressive, wielding her sharp straight-bladed longsword and charging directly at her opponent.
Facing Lund’s daughter, the swordsman couldn’t simply kill her recklessly. He slightly deflected the incoming longsword, using magnetic forces to guide it, continuously maneuvering and exhausting her strength, waiting for her to tire out so he could capture her.
The two moved back and forth in the courtyard, their blades clashing, sparks flying.
