Chapter 46: Borrowing Troops

Chapter 46: Borrowing Troops

The smile on Suratu’s face made Alexander realize just how terrible his own expression must look at that moment.

He hurriedly composed himself and returned to his usual posture, focusing on his teacher.

He had a feeling that his teacher definitely held the key to solving their predicament.

Facing Alexander’s hopeful gaze, Suratu calmly began, “Your Majesty, as you just mentioned, the magic of the Elven Race is indeed powerful. However, our Human Race has reached this point because our capabilities are no less than those of the Elven Race. It’s just that in the realm of magic, where the Elven Race excels, we have room for improvement. I hope you can keep this firmly in mind, Your Majesty.”

Alexander nodded vigorously.

After some careful thought, he looked at Suratu with a puzzled expression and asked, “Teacher, you’ve said so much, but it seems you still haven’t told me how to break this deadlock?”

He understood the big picture, but what he needed to know was how to change the current situation.

They couldn’t just sit here being pushed back by the Elven Race.

After all, the daily consumption of their enormous army was astronomical.

Moreover, due to years of warfare, his treasury was not in a healthy state.

Most of the assets acquired during the war had been distributed as rewards to his subordinates, leaving barely anything to replenish the treasury, which was persistently in the red.

If they remained stuck here without making any progress, he would have no choice but to order a retreat.

But doing so would deal a significant blow, not just to him, but to the entire Human Race.

This was easy to understand.

If the war failed, his reputation would plummet.

Furthermore, with the treasury drained by war, his authority as emperor would be severely weakened.

Those races he had previously conquered or other human countries would certainly start to entertain thoughts of rebellion under such circumstances.

His control over those territories was not very stable at the moment.

In light of this, the human empire he had worked to establish could very well crumble to pieces.

The Human Race might find itself in a predicament similar to that of the former Elven Empire, facing both internal and external threats.

In such a situation, it would be remarkable for the Human Race to maintain its current status, let alone pursue the throne of world dominance.

The potential consequences had caused him to feel so despondent in the first place.

All those years of hard work could be destroyed in an instant!

Honestly, that wasn’t even the worst part.

What mattered most was that his dream of leading the Human Race to world supremacy was on the verge of collapse.

“Your Majesty, I hope you haven’t forgotten how the Human Race has come this far?”

“No, I haven’t.”

With some confusion, Alexander replied, “Teacher, you once told me that our Human Race has made it this far by leveraging the strengths of other races for our own use.”

Suratu nodded, “Exactly! Now we find ourselves in a position where we must borrow that strength once again.”

“Borrow what strength?”

Alexander was completely baffled.

Could the Human Race really learn new powers?

And could this newfound power help them defeat the Elven Race?

“This borrowing isn’t about power in the usual sense; more accurately, it’s about borrowing troops.”

Suratu replied with a smile.

“Borrowing troops? Where are we going to find troops? Is there really enough time?”

Alexander fired off three questions in rapid succession.

“Please rest easy, Your Majesty. The place where we borrow troops is not far, and time is definitely on our side.”

Noticing Alexander still looked confused, Suratu motioned for him to look down at their feet.

Looking down, Alexander saw the wooden planks beneath him.

Planks?

No, wait.

If it’s not just planks, then what exactly was his teacher pointing to?

The ocean!

In a flash of insight, the term burst into Alexander’s mind.

They were on a ship, which was currently sailing upon the sea.

In other words, beneath them was a ship, and at the same time, it was also the ocean.

Borrowing troops from the sea!

Finally, Alexander understood.

Beside him, Suratu looked at Alexander with a sense of relief.

“Teacher, is this plan reliable?”

Although he had pieced it together, Alexander still felt anxious.

Those sea creatures had rarely interacted with their land-dwelling races; they had always basically maintained a “live and let live” attitude.

Would those creatures really provoke the Elven Race just for the sake of aiding the Human Race?

Even if the Elven Race was currently less powerful than before, a dead camel was still taller than a horse!

The weakened Elven Race had proven to the world that even in decline, they were not to be trifled with.

In this regard, Alexander himself was a prime example.

He attempted to conquer the Elven Race, only to end up in this rather awkward predicament.

Stuck with no way forward or back.

“Your Majesty, the harsh reality is that we have no other options left.”

Suratu stated bluntly about their current predicament.

“Alright then, Teacher, what should we do next?”

Alexander, having resigned himself to the situation, asked.

“Your Majesty, next I’ll give you a brief overview of the current situation in the ocean. I believe once I finish, you will come to your own decision.”

“Please go ahead, Teacher.”

Alexander immediately assumed a listening posture.

He knew his teacher was doing this to test him.

“In the vast ocean, the Merfolk are nearly the rulers of all marine races. Consequently, the queen of the Merfolk is also known as the Sea Empress.”

Alexander nodded.

“However, the Merfolk do not have a large population. Like the Elven Race, their dominance relies on their exceptional racial talents.”

At this, Alexander furrowed his brows slightly.

Ignoring Alexander’s expression, Suratu continued, “For a long time, the Merfolk’s ruling position has been secure. The other sea races see no hope of overthrowing this rule, but those races are also very much yearning for freedom.”

“So they lie in wait, biding their time, just like how our Human Race managed to break free from the control of the Elven Race.”

At this point, Alexander chimed in.

Suratu nodded.

“Teacher, I understand now.”

Receiving Suratu’s acknowledgment, Alexander spoke up.

“So what will you decide to do?”

“Though it seems there are two choices, in reality, we only have one, don’t we?”

Alexander retorted with a smile.

Suratu also chuckled.

The master and disciple shared a moment of joyful laughter.

Once they finished laughing, Suratu looked at Alexander and said, “Your Majesty, before we carry out that plan, you must have lunch first.”

“Understood!”

Alexander decisively nodded.

Then he called back the servants he had previously sent outside, asking them to bring his lunch over.
