Chapter 44: The Rescue of the Dragon Beast
“It’s still alive!”
Airael exclaimed in surprise as she looked at the Dragon Beast.
Earlier, she thought the Dragon Beast was dead, mourning over it for quite a while.
“Yeah!”
Axi nodded gently, also gazing at the Dragon Beast. “But judging by its current state, it’s not far from death.”
After saying that, Axi’s expression was unreadable. He had somewhat grown numb to life and death.
Moreover, although the Dragon Beast was a respectable creature, their relationship wasn’t exactly close.
However, Airael saw things differently as she approached the Dragon Beast.
As she reached its side, she gently stroked the Dragon Beast’s head and said, “It would be such a shame for a creature like you to die.”
After speaking, she continued, “Hey, can you hear me?”
The Dragon Beast stared at Airael with its still-open eyes, but its gaze was quite complex.
It understood that Airael had a way to save it.
However, it also knew that there’s no such thing as free lunch; this human before it must have some ulterior motive if she was willing to lend a hand.
Understanding the Dragon Beast’s thoughts, Airael smiled. “It seems you’ve grasped my intentions. But rest assured, you don’t have anything I wish to gain right now. I just don’t want you to die like this. You’re the most interesting Dragon Beast I’ve ever encountered; losing you would be quite unfortunate. Helping you is merely a small favor and hardly worth mentioning.”
As she spoke, Airael continued to stroke the Dragon Beast’s head.
Though the Dragon Beast was somewhat annoyed by the gesture, it was too weak to resist at this point.
“Also, you helped us earlier, so saving you is the least I could do.”
As she said this, Airael pulled out a vial filled with a vibrant green liquid from her clothing (Storage Ring).
Even through the vial, the powerful vitality of the potion could be felt.
These potions were Life Potions; although not a specialty of their Elven Race, every race could produce some to varying degrees, but the effects were definitely best from the Elves, which Airael had brought along for emergencies.
Though the name sounded a bit cliché, its efficacy was undeniable.
It could bring the dead back to life and save someone from serious injuries, at least.
Just like the Dragon Beast in front of her.
It was gravely injured, and if left unattended, it would surely perish soon.
But with this Life Potion, things would be different.
It could help stabilize the Dragon Beast’s wounds, allowing it to rely on its own powerful self-healing abilities to recover.
Seeing the Life Potion, the Dragon Beast’s eyes glimmered with hope.
At this moment, all that remained for it was the instinct to survive.
And the Life Potion could save it.
It was willing to trust what Airael had just said.
Besides, it was about to die; what good was it to overthink?
Axi watched this scene without stopping Airael.
Partly because he felt sorry for the Dragon Beast; partly because, although the Life Potion was precious, it belonged to Airael, and she had the right to use it as she pleased.
“Can you open your mouth by yourself?”
Seeing that the Dragon Beast didn’t refuse, Airael asked.
The Dragon Beast struggled for a while, finally managing to open its mouth wide.
Without hesitation, Airael precisely uncorked the vial and poured all the potion into the Dragon Beast’s mouth.
Though it was the amount for a single dose, it could be used in several parts and even diluted to increase the quantity.
But now, it was all given to the Dragon Beast.
Even Axi, prepared for this, couldn’t help but wince.
The Dragon Beast desperately swallowed the potion.
Watching this, Airael smiled.
The Dragon Beast, in turn, began to memorize Airael’s face with its eyes.
Although Airael had said she wanted nothing in return, it had a different view.
While it might not be useful to Airael right now, there would surely come a time when it would be.
As for Airael’s earlier remark about “helping you is the least I could do,” the Dragon Beast completely disregarded it.
Airael might have said so, but it didn’t think that way.
Previously, in the battle against the Orcs, it had been outmatched.
After a while, the Dragon Beast felt some of its wounds begin to heal.
Seeing this, Airael let out a sigh of relief.
She looked at the nearby corpses of the Orcs and Riding Wolves and said, “Having wasted some time here, we should get going. You can eat them to help recover your body.”
Airael felt no moral dilemma about eating the Orcs and Riding Wolves.
Not to mention, wolf meat was quite tasty.
Orcs, despite resembling humans in shape, were ultimately not humans or Elves.
Besides, they could eat just about anything, including humans and Elves.
So naturally, the Dragon Beast could eat them as long as it could stomach it.
That’s how nature works—survival of the fittest.
Furthermore, it wasn’t Airael who would be eating them, but the Dragon Beast.
As long as the Dragon Beast didn’t mind, that was good enough.
And the Dragon Beast certainly didn’t mind.
These foods would greatly assist it in recovering from its injuries.
Especially the body of Sam.
As a hero-class warrior, Sam’s flesh and blood were packed with nutritional value.
At this moment, the Dragon Beast gently nodded its head and slowly got back on its feet.
“Looks like your self-healing ability is even stronger than I imagined! You’ve recovered your mobility so quickly!” Airael said in surprise as she looked at the Dragon Beast.
“Roar!”
The Dragon Beast let out a low growl, looking quite proud.
Then, it stepped towards the dead or injured Orcs and Riding Wolves.
What it was about to do was obvious.
The first to go was Sam’s body.
With its head lowered and mouth wide open, the Dragon Beast devoured Sam’s corpse in one swift motion, starting to digest it with its powerful stomach.
“Let’s go, Axi.”
Axi nodded gently.
The two began their journey back.
After they left, the Dragon Beast, while eating, glanced at them and then continued to feast.
At this moment, the most important thing for it was to recover from its injuries, as that clumsy bear could return at any time.
As Airael and Axi made their way back, they took their time, walking slowly.
Though Axi’s body was largely unaffected, it wasn’t suitable for strenuous activity in the short term.
