Chapter 44: The Ship at Ebb Tide

Chapter 44: The Ship at Ebb Tide

Lolan Hill had initially signaled the two of them just to be safe, but she hadn’t expected Jerlink to actually dare to make such a move, attacking at home that very night.

Whether in the West Wind or in Vergha, it is extremely taboo to kill someone when they are a guest. It was utterly disgraceful, but it turned out that Jerlink and Angus’s relationship was indeed extraordinary. Even if he didn’t care about his reputation, he still wanted to thoroughly investigate the matter.

“Mr. Jerlink, I believe there might be some misunderstanding between us. Could we talk alone?” Lolan Hill suggested to the guards both inside and outside the door.

Jerlink remained unmoved, and the situation became tense. However, Lolan Hill wasn’t surprised; if this family head were easily swayed, he wouldn’t have acted in the first place. She signaled Chelsea to take out a small box from her bag and retrieve Angus’s last will.

Then, slowly unfolding the document, the first two lines were revealed before Jerlink.

Jerlink stared at the familiar handwriting, his pupils narrowing slightly before he waved his hand slowly.

“Please leave,” Jerlink gestured for the people around him to leave. Then, Lolan Hill also instructed Sares to take the Carites family members away, leaving only the young lady, Chelsea, and Jerlink in the room.

“Chelsea, could you explain?”

Jerlink looked at the maid standing behind the young lady, as if they had known each other for a long time.

“Jerlink, you’re still so impulsive,” Chelsea pushed up her glasses.

Chelsea did not back down from Jerlink Yagdiling’s status as the head of the family. In her eyes, this man before her was still the same as he was in her memories—still that playboy who used to hang out with Angus at bars, full of empty promises and promiscuous affairs.

Following this, Chelsea handed Jerlink another copy of Angus’s handwritten will.

Angus had two wills. One was publicly announced, stating that he would transfer all his property to his daughter, Lacy. The other was a private one, informing his close friends and subordinates that he and Elain had been killed, and that the guild would be fully entrusted to a young lady.

Jerlink picked up the will and scrutinized it for a long time before putting it down slowly.

“It turns out it was like this.” A hint of sorrow appeared on his face. His old friend had left the world, and now even all his possessions were being transferred to a stranger.

“It is indeed Angus’s handwriting, but this doesn’t entirely prove what you said is true. I know many extraordinary sequences can manipulate and confuse others,” Jerlink still did not believe it, as the whole thing seemed too incredible to accept.

Seeing Chelsea getting angry, Lolan Hill reached out to stop her from drawing her sword.

“Head of the Jerlink family.”

The middle-aged man opposite her was puzzled. Why would this young lady suddenly address him this way?

“Mr. Angus once told me something. If I tell you, you will believe me,” a smile appeared on Lolan Hill’s face.

Cunning as a fox, her smile was rather endearing.

“What is it?”

The middle-aged man suddenly recalled some unpleasant memories, feeling a chill run down his back.

“A black dress and dancing shoes.” With that said, the young lady fell silent.

Chelsea was confused; what did this mean? Had Angus ever given Jelinka a dress? They were good friends, but surely not gay.

“Hold on, hold on.”

Jelinka’s expression changed drastically, urgently calling for a stop and hastily preventing the young lady from continuing, as if there was a great secret she couldn’t reveal.

“I believe you, my dear niece. From now on, if you have any difficulties, come directly to me. Treat me like your own uncle.”

At last, Jelinka believed that this troublesome young lady was indeed entrusted by Angus. Otherwise, she wouldn’t know such a secret. This was something Angus had promised never to tell him, but someone else learned it before he died. It seemed that Miss Lacy wasn’t lying.

Lolan Hill smiled and replied, “Thank you, Uncle Jelinka, for your assistance. When we encounter troubles, Lacy will not hesitate to seek your help.”

The young lady stood up, lifted her skirt, and bowed.

After a brief conversation, she took her leave and departed from the room.

Watching the blue-dressed young lady and Chelsea leave, Jelinka leaned back on the sofa, mumbling to himself after a while.

“Angus, Angus, should I call you lucky or unlucky? Even after you’re gone, you find such a capable client.”

Miss Lacy remained composed throughout, showing no change even when surrounded by a dozen Sequence 2s. Clearly, her cards went beyond what was visible on the surface. It seemed that soon, Vergha would stir up another wave of events.

Following this, the previous butler Owen returned to ask for instructions. After Jelinka’s nod, the guards of the Argidyllin family withdrew, no longer restricting the riders of the Callites Guild.

A little later, Owen returned with tea, quietly standing beside Jelinka.

“Has Miss Lacy of the Callites Guild left?”

“Yes, sir. They’ve already left. They’re probably heading back to the mansion now. We have people nearby, and they will report any unusual activities immediately.”

“Mm, just leave two or three people to observe briefly. The rest can return. Don’t be too obvious. Miss Lacy can be trusted.”

“Understood, Lord Jelinka.”

Owen nodded in response, not questioning the reason. Many things at home only required him to execute, without needing to inquire why.

Too much curiosity could easily lead to an untimely death, a warning his father gave him on the day he became butler.

Back at the mansion, Lolan Hill took a hot bath before sleeping.

The next day, Rachel invited Lolan Hill to visit her estate. The young lady agreed. The team needed time to rest and prepare supplies for the journey, so they would stay for two days. This was also a chance to learn more about Vergha.

Into this special country.

At a manor of the Arguthelin family, there was a fig tree forest around the perimeter of the estate, with a windmill and several houses in the center. Occasionally, one could hear the birds chirping in the forest during the early summer morning.

Under the laurel trees in the estate, there was a large swing. Rachel was sitting on it, swaying back and forth, rising and falling with each motion, and laughter echoed under the trees from time to time.

Lacy, also known as Lolan Hill, was sitting on a wooden chair beside her, watching the joyful girl, occasionally flipping through the pages of the book in her arms. The estate was only home to two young ladies and one maidservant.

These days, she had been traveling with the Carithes family’s large group. Today, she finally got some peace in this manor. She felt quite comfortable; she preferred a quiet and leisurely life. Being surrounded by people all day, always having to pay attention to etiquette, made her feel somewhat uncomfortable.

Sitting under the tree, listening to the birds singing, and flipping through the yellowed pages in the sunlight felt much more relaxed.

“Hey Lacy, don’t you want to try the swing? The feeling of the wind blowing against you is really pleasant.”

“It is pleasant, but why don’t you play while I sit quietly for a bit,” Lacy said, pushing her disheveled bangs back with her hand, then turned another page with her left hand. She read slowly and calmly, not in a hurry, as if merely passing the idle time.

“Do you know, Lacy? I’ve always wanted to learn a supernatural vocation related to wind, but unfortunately, no one in my family can teach me.”

“That shouldn’t be too difficult. Wind-related abilities seem pretty common.”

“Not exactly. Perhaps winged creatures among demonic beasts would have it, but humans don’t.”

“Maybe you haven’t been in Vergha long enough. Our Vergha Alliance mainly focuses on the War Sequence, Ocean Sequence, and Primal Sequence. Then there are a few angel sequences taught by priests in the church, but other sequences are quite rare. None of these mainstream ones are particularly good at wind or atmospheric abilities.”

“Isn’t there any school or mentor that teaches supernatural knowledge?”

“There are schools in the larger cities of Vergha, but they mostly teach arithmetic and language. There are schools for navigation and law as well, but supernatural knowledge is generally held by ‘masters.'”

“Masters? They don’t teach outsiders?”

“Not exactly. But you need to become their disciple and follow many of their traditions and rules. Otherwise, you’ll only learn superficial knowledge, and reaching Sequence 2 is the limit.”

“The Arguthelin family has existed for so long, they should have some insights, right?”

“This isn’t exactly a secret. Many people know about it. Our family possesses three advancement paths, ending at War Sequence 4 · White Shell Shield, Primal Sequence 4 · Piercing Wooden Spear, and Ocean Sequence 5 · Ebb Tide Ship.”

“In reality, not every generation produces a Sequence 5 · Ebb Tide Ship,” Rachel said, raising her hand to look at the sunlight filtering through her fingers, sounding a little disappointed.
