Chapter 439: The Two Who Depend on Each Other
Winter Festival party? Lolan Hill recalled last year’s scene. She had fainted at the party due to the impact of the Chaos Phantom, but fortunately, Florasia brought her back, preventing any mishaps.
“Although I hadn’t considered this before, it’s fine to participate. I did promise you earlier.” It would be a memento before leaving the school; it wouldn’t be so convenient to meet in the future.
Seeing that Lolan Hill agreed, Florasia visibly brightened, but as a lady, she maintained her composure with restrained actions. However, the young lady clearly showed her relief through her relaxed brows and a radiant expression on her face.
The girl with golden hair like the sun was particularly beautiful when she smiled, her sapphire eyes as clear as a lake, seemingly speaking volumes.
“Then it’s settled.”
“Mm.”
—
Compared to previous years, this year they started school early due to the early break. It was still autumn, and the weather wasn’t too cold. Many students were still wearing summer dresses and light coats.
With a few days left until the official start of school, many people were enjoying leisurely strolls and gatherings around the campus.
On the west side of Temple Academy lay the town.
Unlike the towering city walls bordering the academy, the outside town felt much more warm and natural. Golden wheat fields surrounded the town, ripe for harvest.
A young lady wearing a light yellow hat walked through the wheat fields. She wore a white fitted blouse and a knee-length light brown plaid skirt. Her long, light red hair peeked out from under the hat, cascading down to her waist.
She raised her head, using her hand to shield her eyes from the intense sunlight. She gazed at the endless sea of golden waves. The wheat stalks swayed gently in the autumn wind, carrying the scent of dry wheat into her nose.
That was the smell of the sun baking the wheat stalks. The young lady extended her hand, plucking a wheat stalk and examining it closely in her fair palm.
The fibers within the stalk were clearly visible, along with a slender yellow leaf and tightly packed kernels. The kernels were quite full, each with long whiskers at their tips.
“Miss~” Another girl called out from behind.
“I’m here, Penny.” The young lady waved her hand in the air. This girl walking through the wheat fields was none other than Windy, formerly the young lady of the Anemeyia family.
Another girl approached her. She wore simple, practical clothes and appeared to be around 20 years old.
“Miss, are you looking at the wheat?”
“Mm, so this is how wheat grows,”
“It’s so beautiful.” Feng Nao spread out the handful of wheat ears in her palm.
“This is the fruit of hard work,” Penny took the wheat ears from Feng Nao’s hand, and they walked and talked in the fields.
“When I was young, I used to help my uncle’s family harvest wheat. Back then, a group of us would use sickles to cut the wheat stalks from one end of the field to the other, tying them up as we went along and stacking them.”
“Would that be very hard?” Feng Nao suddenly asked.
“In the past, she had never done any housework and was pampered like a young lady, but after living alone for some time, she began to understand the difficulties of ordinary people’s lives.”
“As for how hard it is, it is indeed tiring, but there is also a sense of happiness, especially during harvest season,” Penny peeled off the layers of wheat, walking ahead.
“The harvest will start in a couple of days. Would the young lady like to come and help?”
“I… I’m afraid I might not do well,” Feng Nao replied.
“As long as the young lady doesn’t mind, that’s fine. I didn’t expect you to also feel embarrassed sometimes. In the past, you did whatever you wanted without being held back by anything.”
“That was because I knew a simpler world before.”
“Haha, the young lady has grown too. Let’s not talk about this anymore. Tomorrow, change into something simple and come try it. There’s no need to contribute much.”
“If I come, does Penny look down on me?” Feng Nao laughed in response.
Since leaving Hope Lane and arriving at Emanas, Feng Nao had been staying at the school. During holidays, she would return to the small town to the west, which is where Service resides.
Service, although known as the legendary gem witch, is virtually unknown in her true identity in daily life. People only know her as the owner of a clothing store in the town. She has a large courtyard on the south side of the town and several fields and orchards.
After this year’s holiday, Feng Nao and Penny moved in with Service. Although they were still students, Service did not keep them out of sentimentality. Penny helped in the store regularly, and when Feng Nao had free time, she would also come here to sew and make clothes.
Without the former spotlight, Feng Nao had become more composed and no longer looked down on simple labor. She would personally try it out before giving an opinion.
—
The next morning, early.
People in the town began gathering, swinging their sickles to harvest these fields. It could be said that everyone, old and young, participated.
Unlike fruits, wheat can only be harvested within a few days, as matured wheat grains will fall off the stalk and become difficult to collect. Additionally, the straw becomes dry and brittle after maturing.
Lacking resilience, they would break over time. Of course, the worst was encountering rain, which could easily lead to mold and sprouting.
One resident after another in the small town bent down, working from morning until noon, when they finally took a break for lunch.
On a pile of straw next to the wheat field, Feng Nai lay there, using her hat to cover her face, shielding herself from the intense sunlight. Her originally fair skin now had a slight tan. Sweat rolled down her forehead with each breath, soaking the back of her shirt.
“Huh, I’m so tired.” She spread her hands, not wanting to move at all.
“Hard work, Miss. Would you like something refreshing to eat?” Penny sat beside the straw pile, watching her young lady with amusement. In the morning, Feng Nai had been full of spirit, but she had exhausted herself after less than two hours of work, cycling between resting and restarting.
“Yes.” Feng Nai extended her sore arm.
“Alright, I’ll get it for you.” Penny stood up from the straw pile.
“Thank you.” Feng Nai removed her hat, turning her head to look at Penny.
“Don’t you feel tired, Penny?” Despite the slight sweat on her forehead, the maid looked quite composed.
“That’s because I’ve done this before; I already know some of the movements.”
“Miss, who has never done this kind of work before, gets tired if she doesn’t do it properly.”
After saying that, Penny walked toward a nearby house where she had prepared a simple pudding earlier.
After Penny left, Feng Nai continued lying on the straw pile for a while before slowly getting up.
“Miss, here you go.” Penny brought a small bowl, the pudding jiggling inside.
“Mmm, Penny is really good, remembering that I like this.” Feng Nai picked up a spoon and started eating.
Watching Feng Nai eating on the straw pile, Penny reached out to smooth her messy hair and remove any stray straw caught in her hair.
Penny thought back on their past days. Although she came from an ordinary background, becoming Feng Nai’s personal maid had brought her family great benefits under the previous head of the family, which she was very grateful for.
In the past, the head of the family always instructed her to watch over Feng Nai, preventing her from causing trouble due to carelessness. Even though the Anemyi family no longer existed, she still remembered this kindness and wanted to take good care of this young lady living alone.
Moreover, after long periods of companionship, she couldn’t just leave this inexperienced young lady behind. Their relationship went beyond the usual master-servant dynamic.
Because we are sisters who rely on each other.
