Chapter 5 Victoria and Carlos
“Did you already know?”
Carlos looked slightly surprised at this.
“Mm-hm.”
I nodded, then asked him, “Why did you go over there?”
“…Some matters.”
“What matters?”
Carlos seemed reluctant to say, but seeing me persistently pressing for an answer, he scratched his head in distress.
“How should I put it? It’s not something that can be explained in just a few words… A few years ago, my teacher, Sir Sword Saint, was secretly investigating something in the Eastern Continent, and this matter has some connection with me… Now, there’s been significant progress, but my teacher seems to have encountered a more complicated issue, so…”
He turned his head towards Victoria, “Your Majesty, you’re aware of this matter, right?”
“So what if I am?”
“Tell little Schie.”
“You’re telling me now.”
“……”
I pretended not to pay much attention to their brief exchange, lowering my head and fidgeting with the sealed wax on the letter. My nails were all bitten off, so I couldn’t scrape it off. I didn’t want to tear the letter inside by force, so I frowned and thought for a moment before opening my mouth and biting down on the wax seal, spitting it out onto Carlos’ arm with a “pfft.”
“Ew! That’s disgusting…”
Carlos jumped in shock, nearly leaping up, and flicked the wax off his arm with obvious distaste using two fingers.
I had intended to apologize, but hearing him say that, I got annoyed and glared at him immediately.
“Who’s disgusting!”
“You spit on my arm…”
“So what!”
“Mr. Carlos, is this how you treat your host every time you visit?”
Victoria suddenly interjected, her tone still indifferent, but she emphasized the word “host.”
She remembered when Carlos entered and called her a guest…
“Your Majesty… It’s been a while, you don’t need to always maintain such a rigid attitude toward me as a ‘guest.'”
Ah, Carlos rebutted…
“Your Majesty? Carlos, since you know who I am, why didn’t you kneel when we met? And sitting at the same table with me, are you showing disrespect to royal authority?”
“Hey hey, there’s no need to be so formal…”
“Then how should I act?”
Uh…
The atmosphere became tense.
I didn’t dare to interrupt, so I lowered my head like an ostrich, pretending to read the letter carefully, though I wasn’t really focused. I just glanced over it briefly.
Like the previous one, the letter was written by Headmaster Grandma, with meticulous and delicate handwriting. The content wasn’t long. It started with a formal thank you and greeting, a few sentences expressing respect for me, followed by a summary of the academy’s recent situation.
When the Ironclad Guards stormed the city, they didn’t cause too much trouble. This incident didn’t seriously affect the academy. However, many students and teachers left afterward, so classes were suspended for a period. After things settled down, many people returned intermittently, and they decided to resume classes on May 4th.
[If Miss Silvija has no other plans, please return to school then to avoid falling behind in your studies. This is also the intention of His Holiness.]
The last sentence of the letter was written this way, signed by Principal Bertha.
She said Angel’s meaning…
What does that mean?
And…
“Can I return to school normally now…”
I couldn’t help but mutter to myself.
“Relax relax~”
Carlos waved his hand dismissively, “The hype will die down eventually. After some time, people’s attention will shift to other things, and you won’t face those situations anymore… At least not being surrounded by enthusiastic crowds in the streets. Well, that’s probably it.”
“Probably?”
I rolled my eyes impatiently.
“Why?” Victoria looked at me inquiringly.
Carlos answered before I could speak, shrugging his shoulders towards Victoria. “The Herald almost focused entirely on little Hill this time, aiming to divert public attention. Judging by the current reaction, this seems to be quite a clever move… Probably the idea of His Holiness? That’s my guess.”
Victoria heard this and tapped her fingers on the tea table, then turned her head to look at me intently.
“What do you—”
I was somewhat intimidated by her gaze.
“Your hair is too eye-catching.”
Huh?
“And your eyes… but your hair is indeed the biggest problem.”
“That’s right.”
After hearing Carlos’s words, Victoria nodded gently. “As long as we cover up your hair, the chance of being recognized will be very small.”
“How about shaving your head bald?”
What…
I looked left and right, a bit confused about these two… Weren’t they about to argue just now? What are they talking about now?
And Carlos…
“Smack,” I slapped Carlos’s shoulder and shouted viciously, “Shave your head bald!”
“Pain pain pain…”
Carlos immediately grimaced and stepped aside.
“Pei Pei, I’ll have someone find you some hats or scarves tomorrow. Let’s see if we can cover up your hair.” Victoria, as if she hadn’t seen what had happened just now, said calmly.
I quickly shook my head. “No need, I have…”
I had bought some sun hats before, but hadn’t worn them yet.
But clearly, Victoria didn’t listen to me. She had already decided in her mind, unwilling to waste another word, and moved on to another topic.
“Speaking of the academy, isn’t there a girl named Sophia who lives in the same dormitory as you?”
…Sophia?
I was taken aback and nodded subconsciously. “Yes… why… what’s wrong…”
My words were somewhat hesitant, and my tone uncertain. I looked at Victoria nervously, seeing her expressionless face, suddenly feeling uneasy.
Why did she bring up Sophia…
Could it be…
Did Sophia say something to Victoria?
I don’t know if Victoria saw that beam of light smoke being sucked into my chest when I killed Nero… At that time, there was thick frost all around us, visibility should have been very low. To Victoria, what might we have looked like, standing in the center of the frost?
I’ve never dared to mention this, but after several encounters, Victoria didn’t say anything or show any unnatural behavior. Later, I calmed down, thinking she must not have seen anything, but now she suddenly brought up Sophia, making my heart race again.
“That girl is quite nice… Why are you looking at me like that?” Victoria frowned slightly, her gaze showing a hint of dissatisfaction, “Do you still worry I might do something to her?”
“Haha—”
Carlos accidentally let out a puff of air beside us.
Seeing both our gazes turn towards him, he waved frantically. “Nothing nothing, don’t mind me…”
But there was an uncontrollable smile on his face.
Hmm?
Does he know that Victoria is…
“I received the holy miracle from the Holy Lady at the church back then.”
Victoria ignored Carlos and continued with the conversation she had been having with me.
“The poison in my body was cleared. However, when I just woke up, I felt quite weak. The scene was chaotic, it seemed there was a fire outside. I called out a few times but no one responded, so I tried to get up to check outside. Suddenly, two assassins broke through the window, both members of the Truth Gate sect.”
“We fought our way out of the house, into the crowd outside. I had no weapons and struggled to kill one of them, while the other used a civilian as a hostage to threaten us. Then that girl Sophia stepped forward, using her sharp tongue to attract the attention of the heretics, giving me a chance to kill them… She was injured, and after telling me she was looking for you, she fainted.”
