Chapter 37

Episode 37. The Godslayer (2)

***

Special Forces ‘Misteltein.’

“Target eliminated.”

Another monster fell.

Misteltein is a unit created to kill gods. Naturally, they face the most dangerous missions and the most dangerous enemies, but…

“Is the target dead?”

“I don’t know.”

They were witnessing something like this for the first time. They couldn’t be sure, but multiple divine entities and their toys were roaming the city. What on earth happened here?

***

White mist swirled in all directions, and above, a bizarrely colored sun cast a rainbow hue over the dim sky.

That’s the supernatural space for you. At least the disgusting tentacle balloons in the sky are gone, thank goodness.

I reloaded the gun I was holding.

*Click, click.*

I don’t know why I feel so good. There are corpses or something lying all around, but…

Every time a zombie’s head explodes, every time a wooden doll is crushed, every time some grotesque humanoid monster I can’t even name falls, I feel happy.

“Hehehe…”

My clothes were soaked in blood from head to toe. Wearing a gas mask, I should be safe, but I feel like there was something I was supposed to do.

*Sigh.*

I’m dying.

I leaned against the remnants of a nearly destroyed building.

The drugs and cognitive disasters are making my head spin. What was I doing just now? Who am I? Where is this?

I wiped the blood off the gas mask goggles.

First, stay calm. I feel like I say that ten times a day. It’s probably a temporary phenomenon.

If I think about it a little, I might remember, but I can’t take off the gas mask and take an anti-hallucinogen pill here. This place… well.

It’s a really shitty place.

Let’s try to remember what I was doing.

I’m a Foundation employee. This is… some small rural town whose name I can’t remember.

I came here to research the supernatural phenomena in this town and rescue people. Judging by the state of the city, it seems I failed.

Where is this? Who am I? I looked at the things I was holding.

There’s a pistol holstered at my waist. Something that looks like an assault rifle is strapped to the side of my bag, and a shotgun is lying next to me.

What is this? Am I John Wick?

“Director Kim! Snap out of it!”

A cat appeared in front of me.

What is this now? A talking cat? I feel like Alice or something.

“Hehehe…”

“Director Kim. What’s 25 squared?”

“625.”

“26 squared.”

“676.”

“Keep going.”

“729. 784. 841. 900. 961. 1024.”

“Feeling calmer now?”

Deep breath.

It’s a bit of a silly method, but it actually worked. I closed my eyes for a moment. The cat stared at me with its blue eyes.

After a while, I nodded.

“Ha… Speak, Administrator Patreus.”

“No, look around. You killed the crocodile, took out dozens of zombies and wooden dolls. Do you remember what you were doing here?”

“I did all this?”

“First, explain how you took down the lizard god. What on earth did you do?”

“Ah, yes. The liquid in that vial was a memory erasure agent. Since we couldn’t kill it physically, I used another method.”

“Why did you bring the memory erasure agent?”

“We brought quite a few supernatural phenomena this time. I thought it might come in handy.”

The cat frowned.

“That’s pure memory erasure agent. Forget the cost, it’s enough to kill a thousand people. How did you even carry it out?”

Good question. I don’t remember exactly, but I should remember where I found the memory erasure vial. I didn’t just pick it up on the way.

“That was given by the Research Department Head— Ah!”

Damn it. Let’s go back and see.

***

I gathered my gear and resumed moving.

The city was in ruins, but there might be one or two survivors in the city center.

The people who caused this, or the fanatics who summoned their forgotten god. It’s worth checking out.

“Director Kim. Director Kim! Can you explain to me what you’re doing right now?”

Annoying.

“Why are you following me? Just run away, Administrator Patreus.”

“Sorry about earlier. Explain.”

Being stubborn won’t help.

“We’re heading to the police station. There should be a bunker or weapons there. If there are survivors, that’s the most likely place.”

“Our rescue team is heading towards the destroyed armored vehicle. Wouldn’t it be better to hold our position rather than running into the city?”

“Administrator.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

***

I frowned. All sorts of monsters are rampaging in the city. Just getting to the police station is going to be tough. What should I do?

*Click.*

The assault rifle spat fire, and the monsters filling the street were swept away. Though the bizarre vegetation covering the streets didn’t change.

Monster corpses littered the ground. This time, for some reason, they were humanoid things made of flowers and grass.

Moving to the next point.

“Dr. Kim. That’s not a normal bullet, is it?”

Administrator Patreus seemed to have lost his composure, probably because he had no control over the situation.

“It’s special ammunition.”

I checked the corpse at my feet.

“By the way, Administrator. Wooden dolls, librarians, and now gardeners are appearing. It seems like the hostile groups are having a gathering here.”

“Definitely.”

“Let’s observe for a bit. Something big seems to be coming…”

The ground shook with heavy footsteps.

It’s probably a creature from the garden. A bear or monkey-like being wearing a giant deer skull on its head.

Behind the massive creature were those flower people. A few seconds later, the deer-headed thing and the flowers attacked some tentacle monster roaming the street.

It’s a confusing sight.

“Mr. Crystal Clock. Anything to say?”

[That’s a Wendigo. Its weaknesses are fire and silver.]

I don’t know what a Wendigo is, but if its weaknesses are fire and silver, we can handle it. I brought incendiary grenades and silver bullets in my bag.

An indescribable roar followed.

Which side will win? The tentacle monster’s black tentacles wrapped around the deer-headed thing’s arm, but… it’s hard to describe how they’re fighting.

The tentacle monster seemed to be causing some kind of spatial distortion. Judging by the opponent’s reaction, it didn’t seem to have much effect.

“Kieeeeeek!”

The deer-headed thing grabbed the tentacle mass and tore it apart. A metallic, glittering dust scattered everywhere.

The deer-headed thing won, but it seemed to have paid a price. The divine entity was bleeding.

I threw an incendiary grenade from behind cover.

*Boom!*

The explosion echoed.

From the sound of something collapsing, it seemed effective. Peeking over the wall, flames were engulfing the target.

Reloading first. I peeked over the half-collapsed wall and aimed my gun at the target about 50 meters away.

It’s still alive. I emptied the magazine into the deer-headed thing. These are god-killing bullets. Silver-plated bullets with cinnamon or something inside.

*Thud.*

The deer-headed thing’s antlers fell off under the barrage of bullets. The monster wasn’t moving anymore. It should be safe to move now.

I stepped back into the street.

“Director. Look over there.”

“What is it?”

“Over there. The library building is strangely intact.”

The cat was right.

I thought for a moment. If there’s a reason to keep the building intact, it’s more likely to be people than monsters. I attached a bayonet to my rifle and ran towards the building.

***

The door wasn’t locked.

I slowly entered the building with my gun pointed forward. It didn’t seem like there were any dangerous monsters inside. Maybe there are survivors—

Movement.

I pressed myself against the wall and hid.

“Administrator. Go ahead and see what’s up front.”

“What—”

Christopher did as he was told.

“There are three humans up ahead.”

“Ah.”

I checked if the gas mask was properly covering my face, then pulled out another grenade from my waist. I don’t have many left.

“Are you Foundation employees? Answer me.”

“You’re from the Foundation. We can help—”

“Are you Foundation employees?”

“We can help—”

First, that person isn’t an ordinary survivor from Yulje-myeon, and they’re not a Foundation employee either.

“……”

It’s likely a hostile humanoid supernatural phenomenon.

“Everyone, gather here. Show your faces. We want to survive together.”

Please fall for it.

There was no answer, but I could hear some footsteps. Did they fall for my offer? Are they really all gathered here? What weapons are they holding?

From the sound of footsteps, all three are gathered. What needs to be done is clear. I pulled the pin on the grenade and rolled it into the building.

*Pop, hiss.*

Colorless, odorless sarin gas must be spreading through the building. It should take effect in a few seconds.

*Thud.*

The sound of someone collapsing. Success. I grabbed my gun and rushed forward.
