Page Thirty-One: The Mid-aged Uncle’s Super Evolution
It was half past eleven at night, and we were by the riverbank beside the highway.
Under the cover of darkness, we crept along the bridge piers, reaching the outside of the bridge tunnel where Old Feng lived.
On the opposite bank, the brightly lit Tianping Business District illuminated the night sky, making it impossible to see any stars.
Tonight was crucial for both Old Feng and me.
Xiao Lei was still responsible for reconnaissance, while I communicated with her through the headphones. It wasn’t that I was passing off troublesome tasks to Xiao Lei; rather, she was a non-existent entity, and even if discovered, the risk to her was lower than mine. Plus, she was more agile in movement, making her the ideal candidate for this task.
Absolutely not passing off troublesome tasks to her!
“Tell me what the target is doing?” over
“The ingredients have been moved, and he’s now washing dishes,” over. Xiao Lei was clearly just a few steps ahead of me, but all I could hear was her faint voice through the headphones.
“Wait until Old Feng returns to the bungalow, then approach him quietly. Tonight’s mission isn’t just about turning Old Feng into a beautiful girl; we also need to know his appearance after the transformation,” although I explained the mission in a low tone, the seriousness dropped several levels when mentioning ‘beautiful girl’. It felt somewhat absurd.
“Copy that.” Xiao Lei crouched against the wall outside the bridge tunnel, observing Old Feng intently.
“Chairman, Old Feng is admiring the moon quartz; this might be a good opportunity to make our move… it will surely convince him that this is the miracle of the Goddess of Beautiful Girls,” the headphones carried Xiao Lei’s excited voice.
Originally, we planned to wait until Old Feng entered the room before making a move, which would be more covert. Who knew if there were any passersby on this riverside? Also, it would be easier for Xiao Lei to get close and take photos.
But as Xiao Lei said, if Old Feng transformed while holding the moon quartz, he would undoubtedly believe in the beauty goddess cult.
I replied, “Makes sense,” and took out my black notebook [DEATH NOTE] from my shoulder bag. But when the pencil touched the page, I froze, unsure how to proceed. I was deeply troubled.
I hesitantly began, “Xiao Lei, you know, do you know Old Feng’s full name?”
We had always called him Old Feng or Uncle Feng, so I had forgotten his name! When did I learn his name?
Xiao Lei fell silent too. At some point, we had accepted “Old Feng” as his name.
“It seems to be three characters, but I can’t recall the full name… honestly, you’ve come this far, yet you don’t even know the target’s name?” Xiao Lei sounded annoyed.
“I’m sorry, I was really careless this time… maybe we should find out tomorrow and come back?” Although I suggested it, I didn’t want to give up due to such a reason.
“Don’t worry, there might be clues in Old Feng’s room. I’ll check it out soon,” Xiao Lei was equally reluctant to give up.
The room Xiao Lei referred to was the two bungalows under the bridge tunnel. According to Xiao Lei, they used to be part of a bridge maintenance facility, presumably for maintaining the bridge overhead. Now, the department had been disbanded or relocated, leaving only these two empty rooms, which Old Feng had rented.
From my angle, I couldn’t see the situation inside the bridge tunnel, so Xiao Lei sent a photo.
The two yellow tungsten lamps on the eaves of the bungalow were the only outdoor lights in the pitch-black tunnel. Old Feng, under this dim light, silently washed dishes at the sink… the yellow glow of the tungsten lamp unintentionally added a vintage feel to the scene.
“Old Feng really washes dishes thoroughly… even when I wash dishes at home, I don’t scrub them this many times.”
This taciturn man was meticulous in his work, whether it was his personality or perhaps a result of a food poisoning incident long ago.
“Damn, finally done! Good thing it’s summer break, otherwise I’d be late for sure.” Just as I was about to doze off, Xiao Lei’s coarse whisper brought me back to reality. Washing a basin of dishes and utensils took over half an hour, dragging us until midnight. Usually, I would already be asleep by now.
“Shouldn’t Old Feng be heading back to the room?”
“Yeah, he’s gone in. Should I go?”
I approached the corner where Xiao Lei had been squatting. By now, the tungsten lamps on the bungalow eaves had gone out. Xiao Lei had to enter the bridge tunnel in the dark, and I couldn’t find her until she got closer to the bungalow.
She bent down, tiptoed toward the last light coming from Old Feng’s window.
“Usually, there won’t be anything with his name in the room. If there’s a desk, check for signed documents,” I suggested, seeing Xiao Lei approach the wall of the bungalow.
“Hush, quiet.”
Xiao Lei had reached the window, but she didn’t know what Old Feng was doing and hesitated to peek. She pressed her ear against the wall.
So she asked me to be quiet because she was listening to the sounds in the room?
“Water sounds, Old Feng is taking a shower.”
With this conclusion, Xiao Lei boldly peered into the room.
“Oh!” Xiao Lei gasped softly, “Could this be… Chairman, I know Old Feng’s name… Feng Jingsheng, Feng Jing, Sheng!”
Old Feng withdrew from the window, leaned against the wall, and conveyed the information with evident excitement.
“Great job!”
“… Wait! Old Feng is still in the shower!”
Because Xiao Lei hadn’t reacted immediately, I had already written Old Feng’s full name in the beautiful girl’s notebook. Writing “Feng Jingsheng” didn’t take much time.
“There’s white light in the bathroom, looks like it worked… shouldn’t there be a girl’s scream or something? Why is Old Feng so calm?”
How could the tight-lipped Old Feng ever scream in shock? Probably, he would observe silently, clean himself, dress, and leave quietly.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t witness the scene of a girl emerging from the bath from afar.
“Cough, though it’s a bit rude to transform during a shower, it’s something she’ll have to face eventually… open your phone’s camera and prepare. Take a picture when she comes out, then run. We’ll consider the mission complete.”
“But what if Old Feng comes out without clothes?”
I dismissed this concern, “Do you come out of the bathroom without clothes after a shower?”
“Maybe?” Xiao Lei tilted her head in thought, then nodded.
She pulled out her charged Apple phone, extending the camera out the window, presumably aiming at the bathroom door. Her eyes were fixed on the screen.
Stealth photography is illegal, right?
After waiting for about five minutes, Xiao Lei tapped the screen, then another half minute later, she abruptly put away the phone and ran toward me without looking back. She must have been caught by Old Feng.
The call confirmed my suspicion, “Chairman, I was discovered by Old Feng!”
Run, little girl, run! Hehehe.
I put the notebook back in my bag and started running before Xiao Lei reached me. Xiao Lei, being athletic, could easily catch up to me, who was a shut-in.
There was no real cause for concern. In the pitch-black surroundings, even if Old Feng chased us, he would only see a silhouette. At most, he might suspect the messenger he met during the day, which was Xiao Lei, but she was an entity that didn’t exist.
We continued along the riverbank highway until we reached Mí Fēng Street.
I bent over, panting, “Did you manage to capture Old Feng’s appearance?”
Xiao Lei gave me a thumbs-up, “Of course, I recorded it in high definition.”
She pulled out her Apple phone and played the video.
The video was shot from the corner of the bungalow, focusing on the bathroom.
As the bathroom door opened, the once middle-aged man emerged with the heat of the shower.
With a blank expression, similar to the original Old Feng, the girl still had an unwelcoming demeanor. However, compared to the frightening appearance of the original Old Feng, her delicate features made her look like a cold goddess untouched by the world.
“Ugh, I feel like Old Feng is prettier than me… does this notebook discriminate against me?”
Surprised by Old Feng’s exquisite aura, Xiao Lei seemed a bit envious.
“Beautiful girls come in different types. Old Feng is an ice queen type, while you’re… a genuine and cute type.”
“Genuine and cute sounds like a different level! She’s an SR card, and I’m an N card!”
“And I say, her chest… is way bigger than mine!”
Old Feng’s chest, held up by a slightly yellowish loose vest, showed a large expanse of pale side cleavage. I wasn’t familiar with cup sizes, but Xiao Hai Tang and Xiao Lei had nothing comparable to Old Feng, and even the orange seemed to bow in comparison.
But… in my dreams, my size seemed even better. This is something I shouldn’t tell Xiao Lei.
Old Feng wore green camouflage shorts, secured tightly with a rope belt, preventing them from falling off.
What stood out most about Old Feng’s transformation was her long hair, damp from the shower, cascading to her ankles, twinkling like stars in the night sky.
“Hopefully, Old Feng doesn’t cut her hair…”
Xiao Lei’s words made me shiver. Considering Old Feng’s personality, she might actually do it.
Old Feng picked up the moon quartz and seemed to be pondering something. Unexpectedly, her peripheral vision caught Xiao Lei’s Apple phone camera at the window…
The video ended there, as Xiao Lei had already started running.
