Chapter 319: A Medical Lesson
At the same time, Lolan Hill, who was studying medical knowledge at Temple Academy, was still listening attentively to her teacher’s explanation, completely unaware of the events unfolding at Fortress Academy.
She wore the main white uniform of the academy, walking alongside ten or so other students with their teacher through the northern wilderness near Temple Academy.
“Today, we will visit an ancient battlefield where chaos and disaster once took place. This site was only recently discovered a few years ago, and it contains the remains of many heroes who sacrificed themselves, as well as their twisted and terrible opponents.”
“But there’s no need to worry. Nearly a thousand years have passed since then. Even the chaotic phantoms have long since dissipated, leaving behind only the bones of those who possessed them.”
“Moreover, Emanas has been cleansed and purified by sages several times. Even if another chaos disaster were to occur, this would be one of the safest places in the world.”
The teacher, dressed in a black robe, walked through the mountain area. His skin was somewhat pale, as if he hadn’t seen sunlight in a long time. However, what drew everyone’s attention most was his long scythe. It had a rustic appearance, with a hint of copper in its blackness, and its blade, worn down over time, gleamed brightly under the white light of an overcast sky.
“We’re here. This is the spot,” the teacher stopped at a plain clearing and turned back with a grin.
His skin, tinged with blueish purple and paired with dark red lips, gave off an unsettling vibe that made several students behind him feel uneasy. Lolan Hill, however, watched the teacher with interest, knowing he meant no harm, just a bit of a morbid sense of humor.
“Today, I’ll demonstrate how to open a box. No, I mean, open a grave.” The teacher swung his scythe like a hoe, striking the ground and stirring up soft soil. Then he did it again, looking quite experienced at such tasks.
“It’s out.” The teacher’s scythe hit something and brought it out, which turned out to be a broken bone fragment.
“Come, come, everyone gather around and take a look. What kind of bone is this? Is it human, elf, or some other demonic beast or creature, and which part of the body does it belong to?”
The students looked at the bone, carefully observing and offering various guesses.
Due to extraordinary abilities, most external injuries and muscle tears could be treated relatively easily. But bones were different. If they were misaligned, incorrectly set, or missing, it could cause all sorts of problems. Therefore, orthopedics was scheduled early in the curriculum.
And when it came to this topic, the one who excelled…
The one who grew naturally was an Extraordinary Being of the Necromancer Sequence. In the history of Ivar, for a long period, doctors were actually concurrently held by necromancers. They had a profound understanding of the human body and rich experience in dissection. Starting from初级 necromancers, they would learn to sew corpses, and after becoming proficient, they could also stitch wounds on living people with ease.
常年 working on-site (cemeteries), practical operations (grave digging and bone examination), providing services from beginning to end (if unable to cure, there would be no waste even if death occurred), before the Angel Sequence became prevalent, these black-clothed Extraordinary Beings had always controlled the life and death of the general populace, holding a very high social status. During the peak of the Mercury Dynasty, becoming a doctor (necromancer) was a particularly honorable matter.
After hearing these students’ speculations, the teacher did not rush to deny them but instead asked everyone why they reached this conclusion before revealing the answer.
He first had the students scatter, then struck the ground with the long handle at the end of his scythe, causing a faint purple ripple to spread. It seemed as though nothing had changed. The students present looked at the ground, filled with various guesses and doubts in their hearts. Lolan Hill, however, perceived that within the range centered around that scythe, the soil’s usual connections were broken, turning into particles like fine sand.
Then, the ground undulated, and one by one, bones of varying sizes gradually surfaced due to the influence of the Necromancer Sequence’s ability. The bones previously guessed by the students were thrown back into the mud and sand by the teacher. Finally, a complete animal skeleton was pieced together.
It looked like a horse but wasn’t; this corpse had a long horn growing on its forehead.
Could it be a unicorn? Lolan Hill speculated in her heart, and many other classmates also had similar thoughts.
“It seems we’ve really been lucky this time. This is the corpse of a unicorn, but what’s special about it is that it’s a black unicorn, not the white unicorns we commonly see,” the teacher began to introduce in detail, followed by explaining how to determine the cause of death of this unicorn based on its bones.
After analyzing the injuries and death of this unicorn, although it was a medical course, this teacher of the Necromancer Sequence still didn’t forget his old profession and started introducing to the students how to maximize the use of this skeleton, transforming it into combat effectiveness.
Whether to add another skeleton to form a skeleton knight, or find other horse-shaped skeletons to make parts of a bone spike chariot, or simply remove the horse head and add a humanoid skeleton to become a composite half-human, half-horse undead knight.
The teacher discussed the advantages and disadvantages of various methods, as well as the difficulty issues. Unconsciously, the direction of the course veered off track.
After class, the students dispersed, and this black-robed teacher shouldered his scythe and turned towards his residence, which was a house located halfway up the hill.
“Back so soon?” A woman in her early forties placed the prepared dinner on the table and greeted her returning husband.
“How was your day today?”
“Not bad. I’ve been teaching these things for years now; I practically have them memorized.”
“You can’t just rely on rote learning. The sages have always said that one should adapt their teachings to current events so that students can better understand and absorb the material,” she replied, helping to brush the dust off his clothes before they both sat down to eat.
“You always like to add extra content during your lectures. The school has deducted your bonuses so many times already. Why can’t you just focus on teaching medical knowledge?”
The black-robed teacher held a glass of wine and sipped slowly.
“I wish I could, but… I just can’t.”
He sighed deeply.
“My ancestors, and their ancestors before them, were necromancers in the Mercury Dynasty. Our family rose to prominence through the Necromancer Sequence. Many of our family members shed blood for the dynasty in those bygone days, and it was a source of great pride and honor. But…”
“Since the fall of the dynasty, all necromancers have been persecuted. Some were exiled, others demoted, and many were forced to change their paths. Those who refused were often secretly executed by the ruling powers of the time.”
“It’s only because the Treise family of Cuifeng has regained its glory and shone brightly in the conflict between Cuifeng and Oz that the Necromancer Sequence hasn’t been suppressed even now. Despite its legal status, the sequence continues to decline due to its reputation.”
“I don’t want to see the day when the sequence is removed from Emanas because there aren’t enough practitioners.”
“So even if the sages criticize and reprimand me, I still want to let more students know about this extraordinary sequence. It is fascinating and unique, not at all what everyone imagines.”
“I admit we made mistakes in the past, but I believe it hasn’t sunk so low as to be despised.”
“Even if they scold me or cut my pay, as long as I remain at the school, I want more students to understand the value and intrigue of the Necromancer Sequence.”
He ate slowly, talking more than he intended, as if releasing the long-suppressed thoughts in his heart. His eyes seemed to recall the glorious era of the past.
Apologies for the late update, I will make up for it with extra chapters tomorrow 0 0/~
