Chapter 299: Oranges and Potions
After leaving the observatory, Lolan Hill brought Keti back to the fortress in the Eastern Region. She had initially thought that this reincarnated Fire Witch might be afraid, but in fact, she was mostly curious.
Like a newborn bird, this Fire Witch found everything novel, and when flying in the sky, she would ask Lolan Hill all sorts of questions, such as what the large statue below was, what the group of white buildings were used for, and if the birds in the sky could be eaten.
Lolan’s initial concerns gradually dissipated as she engaged in continuous dialogue with the Witch. At least, this Fire Witch was quite easy to understand and talk to, and answering questions wasn’t difficult. The young lady was still quite patient regarding these matters.
In truth, Keti was quite clever. With gradual explanations, she managed to grasp most of it. Although she was somewhat shy, she could discern who had ill intentions towards her, not because she was adept at reading people, but simply because she was powerful enough to sense emotions through her soul. Unless someone was above Sequence 9, it was nearly impossible to lie in front of her.
Perhaps this was also why she had the audacity to be reborn several times.
Descending slowly from the sky, they approached the lake and stopped at a small viewing platform outside the fortress. Lolan opened the sturdy iron gate and let Keti come in behind her.
The corridor in the afternoon was a bit dark and slightly cool. After closing the iron gate, there was almost no light. In the black environment, Keti’s long hair emitted a faint fiery glow, and occasionally, tiny magic particles could be seen scattered around.
“Keti,” Lolan called out to the Witch ahead.
“What is it, Lolan?”
This young lady turned around, her flame-colored pupils standing out strikingly in the dim environment, complemented by her black silk dress and red hair, giving off an indescribable allure. If not for the innocence on her face, there truly was a peculiar charm that captivated one’s heart.
“Can you control your magic now and change your hair and eyes to black like mine?” Lolan thought, otherwise, this would be too conspicuous for school.
“How do I do that?” Keti blinked, puzzled.
“Well, okay, then I need to add another task. Today, I need to concoct a few bottles of specially made rainbow potions for this pure-hearted Witch to take. Seeing that Keti didn’t understand, Lolan didn’t press further and first took her back to the bedroom.
“First, this is where we sleep. There are two beds; choose one.”
“This… this, I don’t know how to choose,” Keti seemed hesitant, turning to look at Lolan for help.
“It doesn’t matter much. It depends on whether you like sunlight or not.”
“What is sunlight?” Keti began another round of questions.
“It’s being illuminated by the sun. Yes, just like that.” Lolan pulled Keti to the window, allowing the slanting sunlight to warm them in the winter.
“Why do we need sunlight?”
“It probably makes us feel warm, and seeing the light should make one feel comfortable.” Lolan rarely pondered this question deeply, but she did enjoy the warmth of the sun.
“But I am fire, I’m not cold at all. And if I want light, I can create it myself.” Keti raised her index finger to her chin, thinking earnestly and simply.
It seemed so. Lolan began to slowly realize the difference between a Witch and an ordinary person. At this moment, her hand was grabbed gently by Keti and shaken lightly.
“Lolan, can I use fire now? Can I demonstrate? I can also create light,” Keti pleaded excitedly.
“If you use it, start with the smallest amount and ensure you don’t destroy anything in the house. Only then is it allowed,” Lolan felt like she was a child trying to tame an elephant. If Keti went wild, she wouldn’t be able to stop her. Fortunately, their conversation had made her understand that as long as she explained things clearly, this newly born Fire Witch was quite well-behaved.
“Okay~”
With a small cheer, Keti blinked, and a tiny flame appeared in front of her, orange-red in color, quietly burning and emitting a faint glow.
It didn’t seem too big. Lolan nodded slightly, and with permission granted, Keti blinked again, and the flame grew to the size of a ping-pong ball.
This still isn’t normal! Lolan watched the distorted light and the flames burning space, instantly reacting inwardly.
Although it looked small, under the keen perception of the young lady, this flame resembled a miniature black hole. The internal heat was terrifying, but the Witch controlled it well, not letting any escape. Only the faint orange light showed itself, visible to others.
“I see, you can put it away now,” Lolan nodded expressionlessly on the surface, but was internally astounded. If this Fire Witch threw the ping-pong-sized fireball, it could probably dry up the entire Silent Moon Lake, transforming it from simple flames into a concept of combustion and decomposition, ignoring some basic physical rules.
“So fast? Okay,” despite not being fully satisfied, Keti obediently extinguished the flame and looked at Lolan expectantly.
“Lolan, I’m hungry.”
“Mm, wait a little, we’ll go eat soon.” It was already past noon, and indeed time for dinner.
“I need to concoct a potion before we can go out. Eat an orange first,” Lolan took a green orange from the Chaos Ring and handed it to Keti, then prepared to teach her how to eat it properly.
“This is an orange, a fruit that can be eaten.” Lolan shook the large orange in her hand, catching Keti’s attention, and a smile appeared on her face.
“Is it tasty?” Keti seemed to smell the fragrance of the fruit, looking somewhat tempted, but didn’t dare to snatch it since Lolan didn’t offer it.
“It’s very tasty.”
Lolan sat down on the bed with Keti, placing the orange on the bedside table and slowly peeling it.
“First, use your nails to make a small opening, then peel off the outer skin, being careful not to break the inner flesh.” Lolan peeled the green skin of the orange, and a series of small yellow droplets seeped out, releasing the characteristic scent of tangerine.
“Then separate the segments and eat them one by one.” Lolan peeled the orange segments and placed one segment in Keti’s mouth, letting her chew and swallow slowly.
“Mm, tasty,” Keti said with slightly muddled speech, looking at the remaining segments in Lolan’s hand after swallowing one.
Lolan gave Keti another segment, and once she finished eating it, Lolan didn’t give her more, instead placing the rest in her hands, letting her eat it herself.
Keti held the orange and started thinking, noticing that the ones given by Lolan were already peeled, without the white pith, while hers still had it.
“Can I eat this, Lolan?”
Looking at the orange segments in Keti’s hand, Lolan fell into contemplation. Theoretically, oranges are eaten for their flesh, not the skin or the white pith. But in practice, she didn’t mind eating the pith if she weren’t peeling it for someone else, as completely removing it was time-consuming.
However, Keti was in a period lacking common knowledge. When answering her questions, it had to be straightforward—right or wrong, good or bad—simple binary logic was easier to understand. Otherwise, Keti would be confused, leading to more questions, and this kind of response would have no end.
Seeing Lolan’s hesitation, Keti quietly took back the orange, carefully peeling off the white pith, as if a student doing a wrong problem in front of a teacher.
“Here.”
Keti offered a perfectly peeled orange segment to Lolan, her fingers brushing against Lolan’s palm, making her feel a bit of warmth in the winter. This girl was indeed made of fire.
After finishing the orange, Keti sat by the bed again, looking at Lolan, her eyes seemingly asking when they would go eat.
Alright, alright, Lolan thought, shaking her head and avoiding those expressive eyes. She took two more oranges and placed them on the table for Keti to eat while she went to the adjacent laboratory to make the Rainbow Potion.
Though this strange potion only changed hair, skin, and eye colors, it was indeed quite useful. Lolan thought, perhaps she could sell it in the Caritas Chamber in the future, specifically targeting those who enjoyed it. If it were in her previous life, this would be a killer item for cosplay, something everyone needed at exhibitions.
Entering the dim laboratory, Lolan lit the gemstone lamps on the walls, filling the room with white light, illuminating the gray bricks and revealing a rather simple environment.
Fortunately, Lolan always carried experimental equipment in her spatial ring, which she quickly arranged on the table.
Generally, the effects of the Rainbow Potion could be controlled by oneself, but Keti might not be able to control it to the specified color. Thus, Lolan needed to prepare it in advance, ensuring it directly turned into the designated color and suppressed the flowing light.
In the laboratory, the gentle sound of test tubes colliding, boiling and mixing of potions, and faint smoke diffusing filled the air. After about ten minutes, a pure black potion appeared in Lolan’s hand, its liquid still steaming, and the test tube felt warm to the touch.
There was no need to find something to hold it; she could directly feed it to Keti. Thinking this, Lolan took the potion and walked back to the bedroom.
Keti remained quietly seated by the bed, lifting her head only after Lolan entered the room. The two oranges she had placed earlier remained untouched.
“Haven’t you eaten, Keti?”
“Mm, I was waiting for Lolan to come back and eat together.”
“Okay, but drink this first.”
Lolan held the black potion, pondering how to explain this unusual thing, but Keti showed no abnormal expression, quietly accepting the pure black potion and taking small sips.
“Mm, this doesn’t taste good,”
Keti murmured, then her hair gradually faded, and the slight firelight in her eyes gradually extinguished, turning into the same black hair and eyes as Lolan’s.
Now, she could finally take this person to eat. Lolan embraced Keti, comforting the young lady who was startled by the change in hair color.
Hopefully, nothing unexpected will happen in the dining hall.
