Chapter 26: The Fine Mount
However, the reaction of the Orc Captain was not exactly what he had imagined.
His and Ailia’s continuous attacks did shock those Orcs, but the Orc Captain quickly made a rather wise decision.
Run!
For many warriors, this was a very humiliating thing.
Especially for those simple-minded Orcs.
Many Orcs would rather die in battle than run away.
But that particular Orc Captain decisively ordered his men to flee once he realized the enemy was too strong.
So, that Orc Captain was truly something special.
Axi was still pondering about the Orc Captain when Airael’s voice echoed behind him: “What a splendid performance! It’s such a pity that this show doesn’t have a perfect ending.”
As Axi chased down the Orcs, Airael stopped hiding and boldly stepped out.
However, she didn’t join in the pursuit; she simply followed at a distance.
Not getting too close, yet not too far away.
One reason was that those Orcs were assigned as Axi’s prey, so she wouldn’t dare take them.
The other reason was that she wanted to see if Axi could catch all the Orcs under these circumstances.
But it seemed a bit unlikely.
Upon hearing her words, Axi turned to Airael and sighed, “Indeed, it’s not very perfect!”
At this moment, he ceased to think about the Orc Captain.
There was no use worrying about it now.
The Orc Captain had already fled, and he couldn’t catch up.
He could only hope for another chance to encounter him!
However, considering the nearly identical appearances of the Orcs, Axi suddenly worried about whether he could recognize them next time.
Although he was a Wolf Cavalry Captain, there were many Orcs just like that, and their appearance was pretty much the same.
Maybe the Orcs could tell each other apart.
But no matter what, Axi, the human mercenary, was definitely excluded from that group.
“I think you should prepare yourself a fine mount; it would make chasing down your enemies much easier.”
From afar, Airael had noticed this as well.
If Axi had a decent mount for speed, then none of those Orcs would escape.
Just like those two horses she had enhanced with “Potential Activation.”
Their incredible speed could definitely help Axi catch up to the fleeing Orcs, while also reducing his own physical fatigue.
“Good mounts are hard to find!” Axi lamented.
He had thought about finding himself a nice ride.
But good mounts were not just something he alone was searching for.
Many others were also trying to find those fine mounts and tame them for themselves.
Compared to those people, he was a lone wolf.
How could he match their speed while searching alone?
There is strength in numbers.
Especially when those groups weren’t small in power either.
Otherwise, they wouldn’t have the ability to seize those rare mounts.
The saying “a sinner with no crime, but a precious thing can invite trouble” applies everywhere.
Moreover, good mounts weren’t easy to tame.
Sometimes, they’d rather die than serve as someone’s ride.
“I’ve been trying hard to find one, and as you can see, the results speak for themselves.”
Saying this, Axi wore a bitter smile.
It’s not that he didn’t want to search; the truth was it was incredibly difficult!
“Then just keep trying. Nothing in the world is difficult. Only those who lack the will are afraid. As long as you’re willing to work hard, you’ll surely find a fine mount.”
Airael said with a smile, starting to feed Axi some motivational words.
Axi shook his head and continued to smile bitterly, “It’s not as simple as you think. Some things can’t just be accomplished by wanting them badly.”
Of course, even though he said that, deep down he very much wanted a fine mount.
He just wasn’t pushing for it anymore.
Fate will come when it’s meant to.
If the timing isn’t right, no matter how hard you try, you can’t force it.
So, everything is best left to fate.
“Well, it’s up to you now.”
Seeing Axi’s weary expression, Airael didn’t say much more, dropping her words and turning to walk toward the village.
Their horses were resting there.
She did have a fine mount, she just couldn’t bring it out right now.
The presence of a Unicorn was just too conspicuous.
Although it looked like a white horse, its prominent horn set it apart. Even if she used some methods to conceal it, anyone knowledgeable would recognize the difference between a Unicorn and a regular white horse at a glance.
Though they might appear similar on the outside, the differences inside were vast.
After a while, Axi turned and followed Airael’s footsteps.
They arrived at the spot where the horses were tied up; the two horses hadn’t recovered yet.
The “Potential Activation” had drained their energy too much.
Airael’s magic only awakened their potential, and while it could convert into energy supporting their bodies, running like the wind was indeed entirely on them.
This was something Airael’s magic couldn’t substitute for their efforts.
“Looks like we won’t be leaving for a while.”
Seeing this, Airael spoke up.
“Then let’s just rest here,” Axi suggested.
Actually, he was feeling a bit tired too.
The previous battle plus the recent burst of speed had thoroughly drained his stamina.
“This is perfect; the sky color is turning, and staying here means we don’t have to worry about sleeping outdoors,” Airael said, glancing up at the sky with a smile.
Just as they were about to find a random room to rest in, many people suddenly poured out from the village.
Some were armed with weapons.
They called it weapons, but for some, they were just farming tools.
Like for example, pitchforks!
But for these farmers, these tools were the best weapons they could wield.
At least, they were quite skilled with them.
And don’t underestimate those farming tools; if you’re not careful, they could injure you, or even cost you your life.
Seeing these suddenly emerging farmers, Airael and Axi were momentarily surprised, but they quickly reacted.
Facing the Orcs and their Wolf Cavalry, these farmers probably wouldn’t get far even if they noticed the danger early.
Thus, hiding nearby was naturally the safest option.
So, there was definitely some hiding place in the village, only outsiders wouldn’t know.
Although the Orcs were aware of this, their pillaging approach was all about “speed.”
Quickly moving south, quickly pillaging, and quickly leaving.
There was no time to search thoroughly for those who had already hidden away.
