Chapter 24: Unnecessary Flattery
“See you tomorrow.”
Bai Ling put down the meal box, left a message, and then departed.
The girls’ dormitory of the Broadcasting Department is quite far from the Physical Education Department. There would be no school bus if they returned late.
Clang! The door closed, and simultaneously, three sighs of relief were heard in the dorm room.
“It’s not that I’m afraid of her,” Yuan Xiaoling said with a tense face, “I’m just letting her have her way.”
“That’s enough, alright?” Gu Hui waved her hand, “Eat first. You can boast next time.”
The dinner Bai Ling brought was the braised chicken leg rice that could only be bought by queuing up at the cafeteria, which tasted great. After eating this meal, Yuan Xiaoling felt like she could go on.
At this moment, Gu Hui suddenly thought of a question: “Did you tell her that we’re going for an internship outside tomorrow?”
“Yeah,” Yuan Xiaoling replied nonchalantly, “She wants to come along.”
“If she comes with us, that’s great,” Qiao Lili put down her mobile phone, “At least we won’t have to worry about safety issues.”
The video on the forum where Bai Ling tossed the basketball had deeply impressed them.
“I can protect us too…” Yuan Xiaoling muttered quietly.
Unfortunately, her roommate didn’t believe her and thought she was just boasting again.
Gu Hui climbed onto her own bed, muttering under her breath: “After today, there’s only one person who suffered the most.”
“You’re right, Zhang Shanshan.”
Zhang Shanshan indeed had it rough; her reputation at school was completely ruined, and even the previous incidents of her posting defamatory comments were dug up and settled.
She herself was utterly shaken, and when she returned to the dormitory in the evening, she barely recovered.
After recovering, she immediately called home to complain.
When Zhang Shengkang learned that his daughter almost got killed by a basketball at school, he broke out in a cold sweat:
“I’ve told you countless times not to provoke her recently!”
It wasn’t because she was good at basketball, but clearly used some unknown ability.
“I know, her spiritual power has awakened, and she has extraordinary abilities. So what? Can she just randomly attack ordinary people!” Zhang Shanshan complained into the phone, “Is there anyone who will handle this!”
Zhang Shengkang was momentarily speechless, hesitated for a while, then lowered his voice and said to her: “Just endure it. You won’t see her next week.”
…
Yuan Xiaoling recalled how she died after graduation, starting to look for a job. Of course, even if she hadn’t graduated, by the third or fourth year of university, there wouldn’t be many people left in the dormitory.
Now she finally experienced dorm life again.
In the evening, after the roommates finished eating, they were bored and Gu Hui suggested doing something together.
Qiao Lili suggested playing games together, Yuan Xiaoling immediately agreed, and seeing both of them agree, Gu Hui also joined in.
Then Qiao Lili asked Yuan Xiaoling what game to play.
“Honor of Kings?”
“Eh, no, mobile MOBA is hard to control.”
“Naruto?”
“Never played.”
“Peacekeeper Elite? It’s simple, starts off against bots.”
“Playing FPS games on a mobile phone is torture.”
This left Qiao Lili without any ideas, even Gu Hui looked at her:
“So what do you play?”
Yuan Xiaoling rubbed her hands awkwardly: “My phone only has an open-world game with two characters and a turn-based game with six characters.”
Both Gu Hui and Qiao Lili fell silent.
In the end, the online gaming activity in the dorm failed, so they turned off the lights and lay on their beds chatting.
Of course, Qiao Lili still held her phone, surfing the internet while chatting.
“By the way, the place we’re interning at tomorrow also makes anime games, is it the same as the ones you play, Yuan Xiaoling?” Gu Hui asked.
She didn’t really understand these things.
“That’s far from it,” Qiao Lili quickly said, “Although the types are similar, there’s a huge difference.”
“Huge?” Gu Hui asked.
“Let me put it this way, if we were dubbing for the kind of game Yuan Xiaoling plays, once we finish, we don’t need to come back. Forget studying, just go home, get a costume, start live streaming, do some dubbing gags, create some salary recovery plan program effects, then sit and collect money.”
Gu Hui listened in amazement: “That sounds amazing.”
Unfortunately, the teacher doesn’t have that much influence.
She thought for a moment and added: “I heard the company we’re interning at is new in the industry, but well-funded, and used to be a big enterprise.”
“Seems like it, let me check.”
Qiao Lili looked it up on her phone: “Correct, Yunhai Company, originally ran factories, had many plants. Some still remain, though profits are average. Now they’re trying to enter the gaming market. Oh, and it’s also a member of ‘Haitian Yise.'”
Yuan Xiaoling blinked: “Haitian Yise?”
Sounds like a guild name from a game.
“It’s an alliance of large enterprises in Tianhai City. Originally named very directly, just called Tianhai Chamber of Commerce, but later changed due to suspicion of monopolizing the local market. Officially, it’s a civilian charity organization, pretending everyone gathers just to do charity.”
No wonder Jo Lili, always glued to her B phone surfing the web, knows so much.
Gu Hui couldn’t help but laugh: “What a pretense, we know they’re lying, they know we know they’re lying, but as long as they lie, it’s fine.”
But what does all this have to do with ordinary female college students? They just chatted casually and soon forgot about it.
Actually, the Bai family used to be one of the big enterprises in Tianhai City, but discussing others’ family troubles behind their backs isn’t nice.
Yuan Xiaoling didn’t feel anything, after all, she wasn’t a native; she arrived last week.
Hmm, since arriving last week, every day has been filled with nothing but Artemisia and more Artemisia. Truly, it’s better to just go to sleep early.
Zzzz
For some reason, probably because there’s no pressure of finding a job, Yuan Xiaoling feels she sleeps particularly soundly after being reborn, even if she dreams of spicy things, she won’t wake up easily.
The next morning, the two roommates were already having breakfast when she woke up leisurely.
“Good morning… Hmm, only two meals?”
Before Yuan Xiaoling could feel sad, she heard Gu Hui say: “Of course only two, isn’t your breakfast supposed to be brought by Bai Ling?”
“How could that be, she doesn’t always…”
Her words were cut off when the door clicked open, and Bai Ling stood there holding a breakfast bag.
Yuan Xiaoling didn’t want to see the smug expressions on her two roommates’ faces, so she got up and rushed over.
“Bai Ling, you came so early.”
“Early? It’s nine o’clock now.” Bai Ling expressionless.
“Oh, I slept too long.”
Yuan Xiaoling’s face turned red as she took the breakfast and sat back down. Her two roommates also gathered around curiously to see what she brought.
Steamed buns, fried dumplings, potato pancakes, wontons, and a cup of strawberry juice.
“Wow, Bai Ling must have visited every breakfast stall at the school cafeteria,” Gu Hui said enviously, “And the cafeteria doesn’t have this drink, did she buy it from the fruit shop at the school gate?”
Yuan Xiaoling hummed, thinking unnecessary flattery, either penetration or transcendence. Translation: If she’s being nice to me for no reason, it’s either because she wants to penetrate me or transcend… Eh?
