Chapter 22

I utilized every possible means to somehow teach the primitive persons how to create fire.

Honestly, it wasn’t easy teaching these creatures, who were barely using tools and mostly acted like beasts, such complex concepts. After countless trials and errors, and many wooden planks breaking in the process… well, I managed to teach them somehow, so it should count as a success, right?

Skipping over the sacrifices of those humans whose hands blistered from relentless rubbing until they were raw…

Once they successfully ignited a flame, I had them set up campfires with firewood. That went well enough, but honestly, these humans… How do I put this? They’re excessively curious.

At first, they were terrified of the intense heat and bright light, refusing to go near the flames. But once they realized that staying at a distance meant no harm would come to them, they started staring blankly at the fire. Now, they’re experimenting by throwing all sorts of things into it! What is this madness?!

Before I knew it, they were skewering meat on branches and roasting it over the fire. They even tried charring some fruit and occasionally burned their hands while doing so, letting out ear-piercing screams. And why are they throwing leather into the fire?! Don’t throw grass or wood unnecessarily! The flames are getting too big!!!

There was a minor incident where a few of them almost caused a massive blaze, but… well, let’s call it a small event, shall we?

Anyway, now that I’ve taught them how to maintain and utilize fire, my work here seems done.

Perhaps I should move on and teach others about the use of fire.

“Gurrrk?! Is that… the Creator Dragon God?!”

“Oh, you remember me well.”

The Lizardmen surprisingly remembered me.

It’s been dozens of generations since our last encounter, yet they’ve preserved my story with remarkable detail.

“Of course! Gurrrk! The numerous histories of the Creator Dragon God’s deeds have been recorded on stone tablets and passed down through the generations!”

Wait, did they really need to pass it down for generations? And carve it into stone tablets?!

“Especially during times when sin overflowed in the world! As the Destruction Dragon God, your acts of punishing the sins rampant in the world must be remembered! As descendants of those who witnessed such events, we will never forget this warning!!”

What?! Destruction Dragon God?! That sounds way too dramatic! Was that when I ended the Age of Dragons in a fit of rage?! Seriously, I regret that decision somewhat even now, and I assure you, it won’t happen again!

Spreading someone else’s dark history around like that is just… too much!

I hid my inner thoughts and maintained a calm exterior before speaking.

“It seems you’re doing well, which brings me great relief.”

“All this is thanks to the Creator Dragon God watching over us. Though the festival dedicated to the Creator Dragon God has become an annual celebration, our faith in you remains unwavering.”

Hmm… Despite their intimidating appearances—muscular lizard-human hybrids—they truly are decent fellows.

If only dragons had followed the example of these guys’ claws, maybe certain events could have been avoided. Sigh.

“But what brings you here suddenly?”

“Nothing much. Just thought I’d give you a little gift.”

The mention of a gift made the Lizardmen tilt their heads in confusion.

“We’ve already received so much from the Creator Dragon God. Another gift?”

“I feel it’s time to share something useful with you all.”

I gathered magical power and conjured a flame in my palm.

“What… is this?”

“This is a flame. It generates intense heat, banishes darkness, and consumes everything in its path.”

The Lizardman observed the flame with awe.

Ah, wait. Didn’t they develop magic rituals that borrow the power of spirits? If memory serves, there were fire spirits among them, yet I’ve never seen them actively use fire.

“This energy… It resembles the energy of spirits who refuse to heed our calls.”

“Hm? They don’t listen?”

“Yes. Some spirits are capricious and don’t properly communicate with us. Their energy feels similar to this fire.”

Oh, hmm… Could it be that they’re incompatible with fire spirits?

Looking around, I noticed water spirits and wind spirits, occasionally earth spirits, but no signs of fire spirits nearby.

Is it due to poor compatibility between the Lizardmen and fire spirits, or does their humid environment negatively affect fire spirits’ perception?

Whatever the case, something seems off.

“In any case, learning about this fire can prove quite beneficial. Take it.”

I distributed the necessary materials for igniting fire among the Lizardmen.

Indeed, communication makes everything easier. I should definitely teach humans language next.

“That’s just wood, isn’t it?”

“Yes, wood. If you could harness the power of fire spirits, this would be simpler, but since you can’t, this will suffice.”

Hmm. In a way, it’s fortunate that the Lizardmen and fire spirits aren’t compatible. Imagine if I came all this way to offer a gift, only to hear, “We already know about it!” How embarrassing would that be?

I demonstrated the method of igniting fire using friction by rubbing wooden sticks together, creating sparks, then nurturing them into flames with dried grass and leaves.

Naturally, providing sufficient oxygen by blowing air is essential.

Conveniently, their scaly skin prevents blisters, making the process smoother.

“Oooh… So the wood catches fire.”

“That’s right. Now take these well-dried logs… oh dear.”

Come to think of it, the Lizardmen live in a humid environment. Can they even produce sufficiently dry firewood? And will they withstand the intense heat without issue?

Although some lizards thrive in desert climates, I’m unsure about the Lizardmen. Let’s see how this goes.

“You can ignite fire by transferring the flame to dried wooden chunks.”

However, the flames didn’t grow as expected. They were less than half the size compared to when I lit fires for human groups. Hmm…

Could this be related to the absence of fire spirits nearby? Quite intriguing.

“While this is certainly fascinating, what exactly can we do with it?”

“Well, it can illuminate darkness and provide warmth. Aren’t you vulnerable to cold?”

“Indeed, that is true…”

Due to their inability to regulate body temperature, Lizardmen struggle to survive outside warm environments. With fire, their activity range could expand significantly.

Perhaps… they might even encounter humans someday.

Humans who haven’t yet mastered stone tools versus Lizardmen wielding obsidian weapons. I wonder what’ll happen when these two meet. Hmm.

“Place a Lizardman suffering from low body temperature near the fire, and their temperature will quickly rise. That alone makes fire valuable.”

“But approaching it makes our scales feel parched…”

“It’s similar to your usual sunbathing routine, just faster and more intense. Be mindful of this, and you can use fire to expand your activity areas. Pay extra attention to hydration.”

The Lizardmen bowed deeply in gratitude.

“To receive such a precious gift… We don’t know how to express our thanks.”

“Don’t worry about it. Even if I hadn’t shown you, you would’ve discovered it eventually. I’ve merely expedited the process.”

I smiled lightly and pointed to the crackling campfire.

“This fire not only provides warmth but also lights your way in the dark…”

With a flick of my finger, I pulled a drying fish closer.

A gutted fish prepared for long-term storage.

“You can cook fish or animal meat using the heat.”

The slightly fishy-smelling piece roasted over the fire for a while, transforming into a delicious grilled fish.

It would’ve tasted better with salt or spices, but beggars can’t be choosers!

“There are other uses as well, but discovering those will be your homework.”

It’s not because I’m lazy that I’m not telling you. Definitely not.

Definitely.

“Oh, there are other ways to ignite fire besides this one.”

I briefly demonstrated methods like creating fire using a bow made from a grass rope and spinning a stick in a groove. Rubbing hands together is the hardest way, so it’s good to know alternatives.

As for flintstones… These guys seem capable of figuring it out themselves since they already use stone tools. Striking stones together shouldn’t be foreign to them.

Alright, let’s observe how fire transforms human civilization for a while.
