Werner’s mother was always busy, and young Werner was always surrounded in his room by toys gifted by Hadaesu. Most of them were either made by him or his children, so they were anything but ordinary. There was a water gun that spewed fire every time you pulled the trigger, a snow globe where 500 dinosaurs, enchanted with shrinking and immortality magic, battled royally every day, and a remote-controlled robot equipped with a mini nuclear missile.
Of course, those toys were relatively tame. If he brought the really dangerous ones, Sabriel would scold him so hard that tears would practically evaporate. Once, when Hadaesu brought a dragon doll that spewed unquenchable flames or a bead containing poison that could melt a star with just a drop, Sabriel nearly lost her mind.
“Ha… That old man sent toys again instead of coming himself… He’s still sulking, Young Master.”
Seeing the 50-meter-sized mecha T-Rex that arrived outside the house, Sabriel sighed, but Werner’s eyes sparkled with excitement.
“And what’s with this manual and remote control…”
Werner fiddled with the remote control playfully.
“The red skull button… makes strawberry ice cream…”
When Werner pressed the red button, strawberry ice cream actually came out.
“The green button makes chocolate ice cream…”
“The white button makes vanilla ice cream…”
“Yellow ice cream is banana ice cream… Wait, this is just a ridiculously oversized ice cream machine, you darn old man! Why did you make it the size of a 50-meter dinosaur?!”
But no matter how much she complained, Werner loved it. When Hadaesu and his sons were making this machine, they were incredibly excited, but his daughters couldn’t understand why they had to make an ice cream machine in the shape of a dinosaur.
“Well, the pink bear button… probably makes ice cream too…”
Just as Sabriel was about to relax, Werner pressed the pink bear button. And the manual read:
[Pink bear button: Launches an antimatter missile. *I just put it in because it was lying around in the warehouse. Definitely not because I wanted to add a missile feature.]
Reading this, Sabriel nearly fainted, and when a loud *KUGUGUNG* sound came from the machine, she panicked and read the last part of the manual.
[If you accidentally pressed the missile launch button, press the black button. Pressing the black button will…]
“Well, Father is a thoughtful person. He must have prepared for this situation.”
[You’ll hear a satisfying *click* sound, so just enjoy that and cheer up, you idiot lol.]
“That twisted old man!”
In the end, Sabriel had to stop the launched missile.
“ᛗᚨᚷᛁᚲ ᛏᚺᚨᛏ ᛞᛁᛋᛋᛟᛚᚢᛏᛖᛋ ᚨᛏᛏᚨᚲᚴ (Magic that annihilates attacks.)”
The missile disappeared without a trace, and Sabriel gasped for breath.
“Ha… That magic consumes too much mana… Damn old man…”
Her magic wasn’t bound by attributes. She simply twisted reality to create whatever she imagined. Of course, there were limits to what she could twist. Her father didn’t care about such things, but she was the weakest among the apostles, so she had no choice. Moreover, the mana consumption varied greatly depending on the range and intensity.
But even by the standards of an apostle, she was one of the strongest mages and a shield protecting God.
“…If it were Father, he would have just flicked it away with his finger… I guess a weakling like me has no choice, Young Master.”
Holding Werner’s small hand, Sabriel quietly began to vent. Honestly, whether the listener was a baby or not, she just needed someone to talk to. Especially if that someone was someone she loved.
“My father, as you can see, single-handedly makes up half of our combat power. And my older sister is also an apostle… She’s so strong that comparing her to me is an insult. Of course, I’ve never actually seen her fight. Someone like me… I’m the weakest among the apostles. Useless… If Father hadn’t taken me in, I would have died alone, right? And yet, I made him angry…”
The fragile girl was about to shed tears. But young Werner, true to his nature, wiped her tears with his tiny fingers.
“Kyaaah…”
“Ah, thank you. You’re so kind, Young Master. I always just receive help. It’s supposed to be my job to guard… But Father even took time out of his work to help me, and I made him angry… Ah, our Father is a kind person. He’s so obsessed with childcare that he can’t ignore children.”
After bragging about her father for hours, Werner started to look bored.
“Ah… Did I talk too much about personal stuff? Then what should I talk about? How my sister confessed to Father and got rejected? Or how Father killed a giant bigger than a star cluster?”
Werner’s face visibly twisted, as if he had bitten into something gross.
“Then should I talk about the magic I use?”
Werner’s expression suggested that would be better, and she spent about 5 hours explaining her magic theory. If Werner hadn’t started crying, it would have gone on for over 13 hours.
“Ah, you’re hungry. Should we eat first and then continue?”
After 6 hours of chatter, Werner vomited for the first time in his life.
============================================
Several months passed. Hadaesu, still in a bad mood, didn’t come to guard God’s abode. But he sent his children in his place.
“Kuhahahat! Is this the kid you’re taking care of, Sabriel? He’s so sharp!”
“Please, stop messing around. This is God’s child. Do you want to get arrested for blasphemy?”
A man with a giant scythe and a masked man lifted baby Werner high, joking around with their sister Sabriel. They weren’t all blood siblings, but they shared the same adoptive father. Their bond was thicker than that of real siblings.
“Be careful, brothers. If you drop him, I might kill you.”
“Hahaha! That’s my sister! So proud!”
“No, that’s terrifying. Why are you proud of that, idiot?”
“But I’m a little relieved you guys came. I was a bit worried being alone, guarding the abode and protecting the Young Master…”
“Father didn’t show it, but he must have sent us because he was worried about you!”
The guards Hadaesu sent in his place were an assassin and a warrior, each known as the pinnacle of their respective planets.
“You know Father’s personality. Just apologize and bring him a gift, and he’ll forgive you!”
“Yeah, you’re right, Garmel. What should we get him?”
“How about some ginseng candy? He’s getting old!”
“That’s a good idea!”
The self-proclaimed strongest warrior Garmel and Sabriel, an apostle of God, were having this level of conversation, making the assassin Galodos sigh.
“If Father hears this, he won’t talk to you for 3000 years. He’s already sensitive about his age… That’s why he doesn’t let us call him ‘Father.'”
“Then, Galodos, what should we get him?”
“He dotes on you, so even a random loaf of bread would make him happy. You know how he is, like a teenage girl.”
“Yeah, that’s true.”
“Right!”
If the man himself had heard this, he might have caused enough chaos to split a few planets.
In the end, Sabriel left to buy a gift, leaving Werner with her brothers.
And thus, the tragedy began.
If the apostles had listened to Hadaesu, or if even Sabriel had agreed with him, such a tragedy wouldn’t have happened.
The thickest shield protecting God and His child disappeared, and the thin shield that remained also vanished.
If Hadaesu had been there, he would have solved it with a flick of his finger. But this simple incident… became a catastrophe that twisted many lives.
