Chapter 150: Stepping Through the Snow in the Mountain
The pale boots made soft sounds as they stepped into the snow. The sensation transmitted through her feet made the young lady clearly feel the fluffy snow being compacted onto the ground, then the cool feeling, like stepping on shaved ice.
The snow piles between the mountain range and the forest were quite thick, almost half a meter high, but fortunately, they hadn’t reached Lolan Hill’s knee height. Otherwise, walking in the snow would have been much more strenuous for her.
A gentle breeze blew through the mountainside. The snow had already lessened; only a few flakes still drifted, occasionally landing on her cheeks, feeling like icy sand particles brushing against her skin. The young lady pulled her hat slightly askew to shield one side from the wind and snow.
The shape of the hat resembled that of a witch in fairy tales, with a large brim and pointed, slightly bent corners. However, to match the white winter dress, the hat was also white, adorned with ice-blue ribbons for decoration, making it less monotonous.
The hat was made by Lolan Hill herself, using pure white star-patterned cloth she had woven. With some free time lately, she wanted to make something with her own hands.
Actually, she had failed twice before due to lack of experience, and the shapes and sizes weren’t satisfactory. It wasn’t until the third one, which she wore now, that she felt relatively satisfied. Initially, she hadn’t thought much about it, but later found it surprisingly nice when worn.
The large brim could shield falling snowflakes from reaching her cheeks and neck. With the hat covering her head, she felt warm, unlike before where her body would heat up while her head remained cold, which was quite uncomfortable.
After finishing the hat, Lolan Hill took a moment to examine herself in the mirror, spun around, and felt something was missing. She then went to an amber maple tree, broke off a branch, trimmed it, and fashioned it into a cane, holding it lightly and twirling it. Paired with this outfit, she looked just like a white witch from a fairy tale.
She initially tried sitting sideways on the cane to fly, but found it odd because she could always pull out the cane and place it aside. Her flight relied on the atmosphere rather than the cane, so doing this would make her look like she was flying on an air chair, which seemed very strange. Therefore, she simply stopped sitting on the cane.
This time, she wanted to experience hiking in the mountains again.
Humans are indeed interesting creatures. Things they enjoy doing for a long time can sometimes make them curious about trying new things. Lolan Hill had always been flying through the forest.
Alright, it had been a long time since she last walked through the woodland on her own. This was back when she had just awakened.
In fact, she had thought about this question later on too: why was she lying there, and what was her true origin?
Was it a穿越 (time travel)? But she wasn’t like this in her previous life.
Was it a夺舍 (possession)? After becoming an Extraordinary Being, she ruled out this possibility because her soul and body were highly compatible, far exceeding that of an ordinary person.
To put it metaphorically, if the body and soul were like a screw and nut, using another body would cause strong rejection, which would harm both parties.
Ordinarily, one could say that the body and soul are born simultaneously, perhaps with a tiny gap.
But for her, it felt more like her soul existed first, and then a body was created based on that soul, making their compatibility reach over 100%, almost perfectly integrated.
But who would do such a thing, and who could accomplish it? There were no gods or deities recorded in this world, and even the Mercury Dynasty, which had existed for nearly a millennium, only obtained some vague legends from the Elves. It was said that before the era of Giants and Dragons, there were deities in this world who created many creatures.
However, this was merely a legend. Apart from a few written records and oral traditions, there was no artifact or relic proving the existence of such powerful beings. Even the long-lived Witches mostly reached Sequence 9, failing to break this limit.
If she was created, then there must have been a purpose or mission. As the Young Lady walked through the snow, she slowly pondered this.
The only clue she could grasp was the system in her consciousness. She once believed the system to be omnipotent, but gradually realized that it wasn’t. This system couldn’t change the world or create physical objects; it was more akin to an observation and guidance function.
It would provide some guidance and assistance to her, yet wouldn’t interfere with her thoughts and views, seemingly wanting her to experience and think more about the world, waiting quietly for her to make a choice.
Perhaps one day, it would reveal her ultimate mission.
First, she passed through the towering redwood forest. These redwoods in the woods stood up to one or two hundred meters tall, with dense canopies blocking most of the sky, so there were few shrubs below, making it easier to walk.
After crossing several hills and turning several bends, Lolan Hill finally stepped onto a pathway cleared in the mountain area, and here she was close to Rabbit Ear.
The city of the tribe was not far away.
Snow blanketed the world, and there were few carriages on the wide road. Although the internal traffic of the Rabbit-Ear Tribe’s cities remained smooth, the roads connecting with the outside world were not passable. The newly opened paths were very difficult to travel, and when heavy snow blocked the mountains, few tourists and merchants remained in the Tixilai Mountains; most had returned home to rest.
The natural attributes of winter always made people inclined to reduce activities and rest at home to conserve energy.
When Lolan Hill stepped through the gates of the Snake-Slaying City, it was nearly noon. Inside the city, the small houses made of green stone bricks emitted white smoke from their chimneys, and occasionally, the scent of cooked rice wafted from nearby homes.
Dong dong dong.
The young lady did not go to the city lord’s mansion but instead went directly to the school gate and knocked on the door.
Aunt Monica opened the door. At first, she was somewhat puzzled, but when she saw Lolan Hill lift her hat brim, revealing her face, she was greatly surprised. Just as she was about to bow her head in greeting, the young lady interrupted her.
“Monica Aunt, no need for that. Today I just came to take a look.”
“Yes, Your Highness. Please come in and sit down. I’ll go find Mira,” Aunt Monica replied, still a bit nervous in front of Lolan Hill, worried she might make a mistake or displease the adults. After settling the young lady, she prepared to immediately go to the classroom to fetch Mira.
“No need, I’ll go directly there.”
Lolan Hill removed her hat, shook off the snow, and straightened her clothes slightly before gently stopping Aunt Monica.
She walked through the corridor in the courtyard toward the direction of the classroom. The grass outside the railing was covered with snow from last night, and some of it began to melt under the sunlight, revealing the green grass below. As Lolan Hill walked on the stone bricks, she occasionally heard the sound of learning and reading coming from the classrooms.
How nostalgic, she thought, preparing to knock on the door when a synchronized voice came from behind it.
“Dignity is not something given; it must be earned by oneself. Only actions can wash away past failures, and this is how we become strong.”
These familiar words made Lolan Hill recall something, and she put down her hand that was about to knock on the door, her cheeks blushing slightly with embarrassment.
What a middle-schooler’s embarrassing line, and everyone is reciting it.
