Chapter 14: The Pegasus Project Final Experiment
Three days later, since Airael had official duties to attend to in the morning, the final experiment was scheduled for the afternoon.
When Airael arrived at the Magic Research Institute, cradling Anna in her arms and flanked by a guard and maid, Domiya had everything ready.
Sitting in the observation area, Airael held Anna while gazing at a nearby machine.
It was a mechanical horse radiating a silver metallic sheen, complete with a pair of similarly shimmering mechanical wings.
At the moment, the wings were retracting.
Airael was quite pleased with this high-tech marvel.
Little Anna, nestled in her mother’s arms, stared wide-eyed at the fascinating sight before her.
Beside the mechanical creature stood a prepared Elven Knight.
He was donned in a white special protective suit, carrying a white bag on his back that held a parachute.
After all, ensuring the safety of the experimenters was paramount.
“Your Majesty, we are fully prepared and can commence,” Domiya turned to Airael after confirming with her assistant, Chris.
“Then let’s begin,” Airael replied, her excitement palpable for the Pegasus’s upcoming performance.
If the Pegasus Project succeeded, it would signal a resurgence for their Elven race.
With Airael’s permission, Chris stepped off the platform and approached the experimental participant, the Elven Knight, saying, “Knight Drevon, you may begin.”
“Yes!”
Fueled by excitement, Drevon mounted the Pegasus before him.
Their family had always harbored a dream of flying.
Long ago, their lineage was part of the Elven air force, piloting those flying creatures like Pegasi or Dragons capable of carrying passengers.
But now, many of those creatures had either vanished or grown extinct.
Take the Dragons for instance; though legends of them lingered, they rarely appeared before people, guarding their treasures in hidden slumbers.
The declining Elven race no longer had the means to develop an air force.
After all, getting those flying species to pledge loyalty was no small feat.
Although this machine wasn’t one of those flying beings, it still held the capacity to let him soar through the skies.
According to Lady Domiya, if this experiment went smoothly and pleased Her Majesty, their creation could be mass-produced. As a descendant of a “flying” family, he would relive his ancestry’s glory.
With these thoughts in mind, Drevon took a deep breath and began controlling the Pegasus beneath him.
The retracting mechanical wings spread open, each measuring over two meters in length.
Then, the mechanical horse raced swiftly down the prepared runway. After covering a considerable distance, the horse reached its peak speed and, in that instant, leaped into the air.
At that moment, a powerful thrust erupted from the backside of the horse, propelling it skyward.
Drevon executed the maneuver with experienced precision.
Airael, watching the horse soar successfully, wore a look of pure excitement.
Next, Drevon showcased a range of aerial maneuvers in the sky.
The most thrilling was when the Pegasus, under Drevon’s control, dove down close to the ground and continued flying for a distance before climbing back up to the heights.
This indicated that the Pegasus was not just an aerial unit; it could also engage in ground combat.
But its primary function remained flight.
Yet Airael pondered how the knight maneuvered the Pegasus.
“Domiya, how did you design the control mechanism for this Pegasus?”
“Through this,” Domiya pointed to her own head and replied, “The core of the Pegasus lies within its body, a Magic Power Furnace. We can connect with the magic power to allow the knight’s mind to directly control the furnace inside. This way, the knight can easily achieve a unison with the Pegasus.”
“Does this involve magical communication technology?”
Having realized something, Airael asked, her face lighting up with joy.
Clearly, this was the surprise Domiya had in store for her.
Airael was thrilled.
Since Domiya proposed this technology, Airael had long been itching to see the results.
“Yes, indeed! The use of magical communication technology has greatly enhanced our design and manufacturing of the Pegasus.”
“So, to what extent have you developed this magical communication technology?”
“We found that realizing magical communication is much simpler than we imagined. Magic Elements are virtually everywhere in this world, meaning that wherever magic elements exist, we can communicate through this magic.”
Upon saying this, Domiya’s face displayed a hint of regret.
They had never considered this possibility before and only realized its simplicity and convenience after discussing it.
“Can it be made into equipment?”
Airael thought of those who lacked magic power or were not adept at using magic.
“Absolutely!”
“Teacher Domiya, with you around, our Elven race has a promising future!”
Airael beamed with happiness.
Little Anna, who had been intently watching the Pegasus, shifted her gaze to her mother at that moment.
“Your Majesty is too kind,” Domiya responded modestly.
“You deserve the praise,” Airael said before focusing back on little Anna, locking eyes with the adorable child.
Seeing her mother looking at her, Anna beamed a smile.
Airael, captivated by her daughter’s charming grin, gently pinched her cheek with one hand and said, “Come on, Anna, let’s continue watching the Pegasus.”
After watching Drevon’s performance for a bit longer, Airael turned to Domiya and asked, “Teacher Domiya, this experiment should be successful, right?”
“Yes, all data points are looking great so far.”
“Could you provide me with a data overview now?”
“Of course, no problem.”
Airael leaned in, ready to listen.
“Currently, our design for the Pegasus focuses primarily on flight. After all, our initial aim is to make it fly! The peak flying speed should be around 150 kilometers per hour, and with full magic power reserves, it can reach a maximum flight range of 1,000 kilometers.”
“So that means, after flying out 500 kilometers, it will need to return to recharge magic power?”
“Yes, or it can be replenished through Mages or other means. Additionally, if magic power is used for other purposes during combat, that distance will be shorter. For example, we’ve designed a Magic Power Shield that, if activated, will consume a portion of the magic power.”
