Chapter 138

The Verde Jungle, known as a demonic realm teeming with countless monsters.

The numerous monsters inhabiting that jungle were dangerous beings, each capable of wiping out an entire village from the map.

Hydras that spew dangerous substances from their nine heads, giant ominous birds with wingspans reaching 20 meters, monstrous creatures each equivalent to a silver-grade monster, and even the Awakening Species, the One-Horned Rabbit, which preys on such monstrous creatures.

In this wild jungle, where even a Basilisk, which would reign as the top predator in other regions, is considered relatively ordinary, there was a hidden village of humans.

A human who settled in the Verde Jungle precisely because it was too dangerous for ordinary humans to approach.

A small village cleverly nestled between the territories of the monsters ruling the jungle, hidden among trees and wetlands.

In that village, a young Lizardman was struggling to contain his anger.

*Squeak*

*Bang!*

“Damn monsters!”

The Lizardman, unable to suppress his frustration, slammed the door shut. His name was Kurt.

And towards Kurt, a cute Lizardman girl with pink skin, resembling an adorable Uparupa, asked in an innocent voice.

“Ah, Kurt oppa. What’s wrong? Skipping work again?”

“It’s not skipping! I never intended to fit into this village life from the start!”

The young Kurt snapped at Lakia, who innocently questioned him, and without waiting for her response, he sat in a corner of the room.

“Damn it… Why was I born in this body… These monsters…”

“Hmm…? Oppa must be going through puberty. Puberty is tough.”

Lakia, seemingly used to Kurt’s irritable behavior, went back to her tasks without paying him much attention.

Kurt, ignoring Lakia, pulled a book from the bookshelf.

The place where the two were was the house of the Lizardman Village Shaman.

Lakia, destined to be the next Shaman, had to train in the Shaman’s house for over 20 years, so it was natural for her to be there. Kurt, as her childhood friend, took advantage of this to skip his duties daily and read the books collected by the Shaman.

The Lizardman Village where Kurt lived was so small that there was no library, and even households with books were rare.

Only the Shaman had a bookshelf filled with various books.

“Someday, I’ll leave this village… I’ll use magic to shed this disgusting body. With this body, I can’t even taste food. With this place and this body, I can’t become a chef…”

Kurt muttered as he carefully pulled out an old, crumbling book from the Shaman’s shelf.

The book was about the various races existing in this world.

He struggled to read the unfamiliar characters, slowly deciphering the text, believing that the knowledge in the book would be invaluable when he eventually left the village.

However, as Kurt later experienced various events, he came to accept his identity as a Lizardman and grew to truly love the villagers, rendering the knowledge from the book useless.

Or so it seemed.

He gave up his dream of becoming a chef and accepted his role as a hunter…

Yet, paradoxically, after accepting his reality and letting go of his longing to be human and his dream of being a chef, he reached transcendence, regained his lost sense of taste, and embarked on a journey…

But first, this was the content he read not long after picking up the book.

Elves live nearly ten times longer than ordinary humans and possess a beauty that surpasses human aesthetic standards, but they cannot eat meat, a fatal weakness by general biological standards.

The beauty and long lifespan of Elves are enviable, but the fact that they can never taste meat…

Being an Elf isn’t all good.

Additionally, Elves reside in forests centered around the World Tree, often overlapping territories with Dwarves, who have settled in the Great Flood where A-Dragons constantly invade.

Despite living in close proximity, the relationship between Elves and Dwarves is not particularly good.

In fact, they maintain a rather distant relationship.

This difference seems to stem from the Dwarves’ culture, which not only has no qualms about using fire but actively embraces it.

Dwarves are divided into warriors and blacksmiths, with a highly developed iron culture, a trait that doesn’t sit well with Elves, who are extremely averse to using fire.

Of course, among Elves, there are City Elves and Dark Elves who don’t shy away from using fire, but these two groups are exceptions, as they generally don’t get along well with other human races.

And since we’ve mentioned City Elves and Dark Elves, it’s a good time to explain the branches of Elves.

The previously described traits are common among Elves, but not all Elves share these characteristics.

Elves can be broadly classified into three branches.

The first is the general, ordinary Elves, who make up the majority of the Elf population.

Commonly referred to as Elves, or Wood Elves to distinguish them from the other two, and called Wood Elves by City Elves.

There isn’t much to say about Wood Elves.

The general traits known about Elves are essentially those of Wood Elves.

They lead a naturalistic life, are close to spirits like family, avoid using fire for burning wood, and their civilization has developed in a direction that minimizes fire usage.

The typical image of an Elf corresponds to that of a Wood Elf.

Thus, there’s little to elaborate on regarding Wood Elves.

The second branch, after Wood Elves, is the City Elves.

Or, as they call themselves, High Elves.

Biologically, there’s no difference between City Elves and Wood Elves.

Yet, they are classified as separate branches due to the stark cultural differences between the two groups.

City Elves are more development-oriented and, at the same time, more arrogant than Wood Elves.

Unlike Wood Elves, who build wooden structures and sometimes carve trees into living spaces, City Elves actively develop their territories, living up to their name.

They actively use fire, and as a result, their dietary habits and lifestyle have evolved closer to humans than Wood Elves.

Of course, despite their active use of fire, they still reside within the World Tree’s forest, so their architecture primarily consists of stone buildings rather than fire-vulnerable wooden structures.

Additionally, their relationship with spirits differs from that of Wood Elves.

While they share the same biological affinity for sensing spirits in nature, City Elves maintain a more formal relationship with spirits, unlike the emotionally close, familial bond Wood Elves have.

City Elves use their unique contract magic to bind themselves to spirits, engaging in a more transactional relationship compared to the intimate connection Wood Elves have with spirits.

This difference in spirit relationships is also reflected in their creation myths.

Wood Elves believe their origin lies in spirits who desired physical forms, thus considering themselves a branch of spirits and maintaining close ties with them.

City Elves, however, see themselves as evolved from spirits, viewing spirits as primitive beings who failed to evolve.

They consider themselves not a branch of spirits but a superior new species.

Moreover, City Elves rank spirits, placing those governing the four elements at the highest level and others a step below, showcasing their arrogance.
