Chapter 128 – The Night of Promises

Near the gates of the Carites Guild’s headquarters, two young ladies stood hand in hand.

“It’s not right, Lanli. Teacher will scold us,” Lingxin said.

“Don’t worry, Lingxin. We’re just passing by and defending ourselves,” Lanli replied to her friend, who had always been brave since childhood.

“What if we can’t win?” Lingxin asked.

“Then I’ll rely on you, Lingxin. You’re our class’s West Wind Speedster. Surely you can help me escape,” Lanli said with a smile.

“Ugh, why did I ever decide to come travel with you,” Lingxin sighed, but still nodded in agreement.

As they conversed, a group of torch-bearing figures appeared across the street. They were fully armed, marching forward with a menacing aura. Emergency bells rang above the Carites Guild, and some archers took their positions.

“Who are you? Get out of here!” the advancing group warned when they saw the two young ladies.

“We apologize, we are just passing students. But we stand here today. If you want us to leave, you’ll have to fight us,” Lanli retorted.

The group, pressed for time, didn’t have the patience to argue with the two girls. Two men stepped forward to drag them away, as they were clearly from wealthy families and couldn’t be killed carelessly.

“Let go!” Lanli slapped away the hands trying to touch her.

“You two think you can resist?” A large man raised his hand to slap her, but Lingxin grabbed his wrist and kicked him down.

Seeing their fallen comrade, the advancing group lost their patience and charged forward.

“Ah, looks like we’re going to fight,” Lanli seemed excited, while Lingxin slowly moved back to give her friend space, carefully watching for any other attacks.

Looking at the charging men, Lanli remained calm. She clasped her hands together, raising them above her head, and electricity flashed in her eyes.

“Here they come, Uncle,” she said, then separated her palms, holding them in the air before placing them on either side of her chest. Intense blue lightning flowed between her palms, illuminating her face in the dark, and a smell of burning filled the air.

Crack!

A sound like thunder echoed across the ground, and intense lightning snaked through the streets.

On the dark street, dazzling flashes of lightning pierced through like roaring spears, striking everything in their path.

Hundreds of people on the street trembled under the electric shock and then fell slowly.

Lingxin, seeing the chaotic scene, worriedly asked, “Did you kill them, Lanli?”

“Don’t worry, Lingxin. I controlled it,” Lanli replied, kicking a nearby fallen man, who groaned weakly.

“See? They’re still alive,” Lanli said to her friend.

“Alright, let’s hope they don’t get stunned by your lightning,” Lingxin said, knowing her friend’s strength. During her internship, she had paralyzed a Level 6 dragon with lightning, nearly killing it. Luckily, a student from the Temple Academy saved it.

In a mansion by the seaside, which could no longer be called a mansion as only half of it remained standing, with its dome and second floor gone, leaving only ruins. People moaned as they crawled out from the debris, only to see a young lady in the hall, protecting a small group with a gust shield.

“Who are you?” Wick asked, his glasses shattered. He grabbed a musket, aiming it at Lolan Hill.

“Fire! Fire! Kill her!” he shouted, ordering the guards behind him. Sparks flew from the gun, but the bullet stopped in mid-air, as if hitting an invisible barrier.

Lolan Hill picked up the bullet, examined it briefly, and then threw it, piercing Wick, causing him to clutch his throat, blood oozing from his fingers, his body convulsing.

“Wick!” Edley was shocked and angry, looking at his fallen brother, then drew his curved knife.

“How dare you kill my brother!”

“Why are you so angry? Didn’t you think about this day when you killed Angus and Elain?” Lolan Hill looked at the young man, her eyes flashing, but her mind wandered to another matter.

Is this what it means to kill someone? Why do I feel neither sorrow nor fear? Am I starting to treat life like grass?

No, these people deserved it. Blood for blood, justice must be served.

She had inherited Angus’ legacy and accepted his grudges and hatred. She couldn’t convince herself to spare the Tisiphone family.

Edley, holding a frosty curved knife, rushed at her, his figure seemingly vanishing momentarily, making it impossible to track his movements.

Lolan Hill sighed, drawing a red line in the air with her finger, followed by the sound of flesh scattering on the ground.

The curved knife fell to the ground with a sharp clatter, now broken in two. Edley’s eyes dimmed, his body severed in half, blood splattering the floor.

Watching the bloody scene, Lolan Hill closed her eyes slightly. Apologies, for the first time, she couldn’t hold back. Then a gust of wind blew, covering Edley’s body with torn curtains.

The remaining Tisiphone family guards in the hall screamed in terror, like crying infants.

Their voices were frenzied, causing shivers. Others nearby also watched Lolan Hill fearfully, fearing for their lives.

At this moment, people in the hall began to flee. Nois, Fenlton, and others cautiously hid from the girl’s sight, retreating slowly.

However, Lolan Hill had long noticed their presence, and there was nowhere for them to run. At this moment, they hesitated because a more important enemy had appeared.

Alchemist Zenep, who had once enjoyed conversations with Lolan Hill, emerged from the shadows of the hall, his black robe glistening faintly in the moonlight.

“Aren’t you going to save Edley and the others?” Lolan Hill asked curiously, wondering why the alchemist had stood by and done nothing earlier.

“Why should I save them?”

“Even though we belong to the same organization, we aren’t friends. Why make others misunderstand?”

Zenep seemed to recall something and spoke softly.

Then, a towering figure appeared outside the mansion. A massive golem rose from beneath the sea cliff, its giant body blocking the moonlight, plunging the entire hall into darkness.
