Chapter 1

The cheerful voice of my younger sister softly broke the deep silence of the night.

“Older Sister, the moon is so pretty! Let’s go up the mountain together.”

It was a sudden suggestion. The moon was beautiful, but I wondered what kind of mountain hike this was at such a late hour. However, when I looked up, my sister’s sparkling eyes seemed to shine even brighter than the moonlight.

She had always been particularly attached to me since she was little. I remembered her small, soft hands gently tugging at my clothes. She wasn’t a tiny baby anymore, but her cuteness and loveliness remained the same. Every time her pink skirt swayed, laughter burst out. That kid, really… I clicked my tongue, but a smile still appeared on my face.

“In the middle of the night? Why do you suddenly want to go to the mountain?”

I asked with a worried heart. The night road would be dark and dangerous, I thought. But my sister, with her cheeks already flushed red, tightly hugged my arm.

“Today feels really special. I want to see the moon with you, Older Sister!”

She was always overflowing with charm, but it had been a while since she had been this persistent.

Her earnest gaze weakened my heart again. I was someone who could hardly refuse my sister’s requests.

“Sigh… You’re really impossible. Alright. But you have to dress warmly.”

In the end, I raised both hands in surrender. The night air was cold, but my sister’s hand was warm. We carefully walked along the mountain path. The sound of insects filled the quiet night. The moonlight was faint, but it was enough to light our way.

My sister chattered excitedly beside me like a little bird.

“Older Sister, look over there! Those stars! The moonlight and starlight together are so beautiful, aren’t they?”

I wondered if I had been needlessly worried. My sister, shining under the moonlight, was like a scene in itself. Seeing her walk with a bright, childlike smile, I thought maybe I needed this kind of diversion too.

When we reached the middle of the mountain, the sight before us was breathtakingly beautiful. The full moon hung round in the night sky, illuminating it brightly, and below, the small village we lived in looked like a tiny toy from a fairy tale.

My sister stood with her arms wide open, as if trying to embrace the moonlight.

“It’s really pretty, Older Sister! So, so pretty!”

Her clear laughter echoed through the night sky.

I slowly stroked her hair. Her soft, warm hair shimmered faintly in the moonlight.

“Older Sister, your hands are cold.”

My sister whispered in a small voice as she held my hand. Her small, soft hand wrapped around mine. I chuckled and held her hand in return.

“Your hands are colder, kiddo.”

Even with my teasing joke, her cheeks turned red under the moonlight. I didn’t know how beautiful the innocence and curiosity reflected in her big eyes were. My sister held my hand and leaned slightly on my shoulder.

I was momentarily surprised by her unexpected action, but the warmth spreading through my body put my heart at ease. Her breath tickled my ear as she got closer.

“Older Sister… Should we make a wish to the moon?”

Her voice softly seeped into the quiet night, carried by the moonlight. I nodded quietly. I wished that my precious sister would always be as happy as she was now. Such a simple but earnest wish slowly rose in my heart.

“Older Sister, what did you wish for?”

Breaking the silence of the quiet night, my sister asked.

I smiled and patted her shoulder.

“It’s a secret.”

When I answered playfully, my sister puffed up her cheeks and glared at me. But her angry face didn’t last long, and she soon smiled brightly and looked up at the night sky again.

Feeling the small weight of my sister leaning on my shoulder, I quietly wished for this peaceful moment to last forever.

“It’s getting chilly. Let’s head back now.”

I could feel the cold night air brushing against my cheeks. My sister’s shoulders seemed to shiver slightly. Even though she had begged to see the moon late into the night, I was worried she might catch a cold if we stayed any longer.

“Already? Can’t we stay a little longer, Older Sister?”

My sister tugged at my clothes and looked up at me with regret. Her big eyes, sparkling under the moonlight, were as beautiful as jewels. But no matter how pretty, I couldn’t give in.

“No. You’ll catch a cold.”

I spoke firmly and tried to take her hand, but my sister grabbed my arm tightly first.

“Older Sister’s arm is warm… Let’s stay like this a little longer.”

My heart skipped a beat at my sister’s sudden action. Feeling my face heat up, I tried to act calm.

“If we stay like this, we’ll really…”

“I’m catching a cold, you know.”

At my words, my sister pouted her lips, but she couldn’t force herself to let go. Eventually, with my sister clinging to my arm, we carefully started descending the mountain path.

Since my sister was leaning tightly against my arm, I could vividly feel the softness of her hair brushing against my skin. Even in the cold air, warmth and softness seemed to seep through.

It was a strange feeling. She was clearly my cute and precious younger sister, yet…

My sister held onto my arm tightly the whole way down. I wasn’t sure if it was because she was afraid of slipping or if my arm was just that warm. Her small body temperature was distinctly felt on my shoulder and arm.

Even in the dark mountain path, my sister’s breath was close, and I quietly watched over her as we slowly made our way. After arriving home, I tucked her in and lay down beside her.

The sound of her soft breathing tickled my ear. When I slightly opened my eyes, her rosy cheeks glowed faintly under the moonlight.

The blanket was warm from her body heat, but a chill began to creep in, making me curl up involuntarily. Since childhood, I’d often wake up to this kind of cold.

A passing Taoist once told me I had a divine ability, and I’d occasionally see ghosts.

I opened the door and stepped into the yard. Under the faint moonlight, a cold aura lingered. But it wasn’t an unpleasant fear—it was more like the quiet, crisp air of a winter dawn.

At that moment, I unconsciously held my breath. In the middle of the yard stood an old man in white mourning clothes. A shiver ran down my spine.

The old man slowly turned his head and looked at me. His deeply wrinkled face and hollow eyes gave off an extraordinary aura.

“Old man… who are you? What brings you here at this hour…?”

I asked in a tense, trembling voice. But instead of answering, the old man stared at me as if piercing through me. After a moment of silence, a low, hoarse voice broke the stillness.

“In this house… something dangerous is hiding.”

It was a short but intense warning.

“It will start small. A rat will die, then a cat, then a chicken. You can ignore it if you want. But if you want to survive, run before the cow dies. You’ll need to flee over a thousand miles to escape.”

“A thousand miles…?”

I almost laughed at the absurdity of his words. But the old man’s eyes were strangely serious and desperate.

“…I wish I could say more, but I can’t reveal too much of heaven’s will.”

With that, the old man vanished like smoke. It was hard to believe. The empty yard was left with only the cold wind and moonlight. But his final warning echoed loudly in my ears.

A rat, a cat, a chicken… and a cow.

A foreboding feeling crept down my spine. The sound of dry leaves crunching underfoot seemed unusually loud. Without looking back at the darkness behind me, I quickly returned to the room.

As soon as I opened my eyes, my sister’s bright face greeted me. Her orange hair shimmered in the sunlight, and her sky-blue eyes sparkled with joy.

The uneasy atmosphere from last night had completely vanished, replaced by a peaceful morning bathed in dazzling sunlight.

“Good morning, sis!”

Her refreshing voice filled the room. Her beaming face was like the morning sun itself. A soft finger tapped my forehead and then pulled away.

The ticklish sensation made me laugh involuntarily. My sister’s cheeks were flushed with a bright smile. Her adorable expression made me reach out and gently pinch her cheek.

“Ah, that tickles!”

She giggled and snuggled into my arms. Along with her soft touch, a faint floral scent wafted through the air. The warmth in my arms seemed to slowly melt away the anxiety that had plagued me all night.

I quietly patted her back, trying to reassure myself. But a small shadow of doubt from last night lingered in a corner of my mind. The old man’s warning kept resurfacing.

A rat, a cat, a chicken… and a cow.

Those eerie and bizarre words swirled in my head.

“What should we do today, sis?”

My sister looked up at me with expectant eyes. Her pure gaze was so clear that I didn’t want to ruin this moment.

“Hmm… I wonder. What do you want to do?”

I deliberately replied in a brighter, lighter tone. For now, I wanted to focus on this happy and peaceful moment. But somewhere in my heart, I felt an ominous breeze pass by.
