Saint (Constellation).
The lofty beings who sit in positions akin to stars in the universe, bestowing power and resources upon humble challengers.
They all possess immense power, and simply receiving patronage from a Saint can elevate one to extraordinary heights.
“…But in reality, it’s nothing special. They’re just half-gods bound to the tower.”
Floor 15, Shrine of Stars.
This is where diligent challengers have been formally contracting with Saints after their efforts, with the raccoon, who had just completed a Saint contract, calmly replying while now encased in a stronger yellow lightning.
The Saint the raccoon had contracted with was said to be a deity of lightning, the Thunder Dragon, who always chose this same Saint during every regression to maximize the ‘power’ given by the great being and to obtain a superficial reason.
To use abilities freely moving forward, a good excuse would be necessary.
I observed the divine energy clinging to the raccoon and Lord Leo.
“Their level feels similar to the gods of Ertarn.”
Other than the celestial being known as Ertarn, the lion and wolf-shaped gods seemed to be on a similar level.
They may be far above the reach of mortals, but are they truly that extraordinary? Not really.
It seems that since the New Continent and the Altar both appeared around the same time, their power levels are almost equal.
[It’s nothing much.]
[Were they wiped out by Lily?]
[Still, they seem pretty strong though haha.]
[Let’s have Lily contract.]
[Don’t you think Lily should be giving out the power?]
[Saintess Lily;;]
[What would happen if we wiped out all the gods?]
“Which Saint did Lord Leo contract with?”
“Hmm. I’ve got Valkyrie, Ice Lord, Earth God, and Thunder Master…”
Leo recited the names of the various deities he had contracts with.
While there were quite a few high-ranking deities among them, there were also many of a lower rank.
There were approximately ten in total.
Their defining trait was…
“Their attributes match with spirits.”
“Yup. It’s more convenient that way.”
They all perfectly matched the five attributes that Leo had contracts for: wind, lightning, ice, earth, and light.
It would naturally have to be in a familiar form for someone trying to manage the powers of so many deities.
“You’re not going to contract with anyone? No matter how strong your existing abilities are, it wouldn’t hurt to do so.”
“I’m considering it.”
Seeing how both the raccoon and Leo continued to form additional contracts as they progressed through the tower, it didn’t seem like there would be any immediate downsides.
Even Leo, who previously claimed, “Contracting with a Saint will prevent me from seeing the true ending,” had returned from the hidden world and gone on to contract with ten Saints.
If even the two regressed individuals think it’s fine, there shouldn’t be any problems, but I still needed to choose…
[Master of Non-Swordsmanship requests a contract with you.]
[One Who Chooses Fate requests a contract with you.]
[Light’s Successor requests a contract with you.]
[Guardian of the Underworld requests a contract with you.]
[One Wearing a Carapace suggests a contract…]
‘I need to figure out what each of these actually refers to.’
The “True Names” of Saints are kept hidden, and apparently they shield themselves by using honorific phrases.
Thus, selecting the best option requires judging solely from their honorifics.
[What’s this Non-Swordsmanship?]
[They’re all pretty cool sounding names.]
[How about the Guardian of the Underworld?]
[Let’s go for Light’s Successor!]
[Something doesn’t seem appealing about any of these, why?]
[If we don’t contract, wouldn’t Lily become a Saint herself? lol]
[Let’s murder them after contracting.]
[They seem like mythological-inspired names but why does it feel unclear?]
[Let’s start!]
“Hmm.”
The chat window had mixed reactions.
Tutorials are inherently familiar to people but the terminology can always be slightly different.
To find out the honorifics, one would have to either ask the Saints directly or consult those who have already met them.
“What should I do?”
“Did anyone express a preference? I can’t tell you all the Saints’ honorifics, but I can give you some insight.”
“I’ll help you too!”
“First, the Master of Non-Swordsmanship and the One Who Chooses Fate…”
I called on the two regressors who had the best understanding of these honorifics regarding the Saints currently offering contracts to me.
The gods that approached me numbered around twenty.
This was relatively numerous by challenger standards, but compared to the raccoon and Leo, who had received nearly a hundred contract requests, it was a significantly lower number.
These two had achieved extraordinary feats like opposing rabbits or regressing in the hidden world, whereas I have simply climbed steadily well.
There’s bound to be less attention given.
[The Master of Non-Swordsmanship offers you magnificent swordsmanship!]
[The One Who Chooses Fate promises to reveal your destiny.]
[Light’s Successor offers you a light that suits you perfectly.]
[The Guardian of the Underworld offers you a path to the Underworld.]
[The One Wearing a Carapace proposes to offer something incredibly…]
[LOL]
[Everyone loves them lol.]
[Aww, tell me more please.]
[Can’t we do multiple contracts like Leo?]
[Just grab everything from all of them, Lily!]
“The chat doubled in size.”
An ordinary person might think everyone has gone crazy.
“Hmm… which Saint would you like first? One of high rank? Or one more suited to you?”
“Let’s start with the high ranks.”
“The higher-ranked ones would be ‘Light’s Successor’ and ‘Guardian of the Underworld.'”
“You mean that angel and the three-headed puppy?”
“Nymph? Have you met them?”
“Yeah. We even had some negotiations.”
Leo mentioned the two Saints he had met before.
First, the Light’s Successor was described as a male figure with two wings, not a ‘real’ angel that I knew, but rather a pseudo-angel from the Angel Guild named ‘Gabriel’.
An entity imbued with an improved form of holiness.
“True name is ‘Uruel.’ They hold a fairly strong rank and power, and having a contract with them would make you virtually unrivaled in the early stages.”
“Would that be useful for me?”
“Hmm…”
The raccoon intensely stared at me, then shook his head.
“It doesn’t seem like you need to bother. You already possess such power.”
“Is that so?”
“Yup. If the only reason is to avoid drawing attention, like I do, it doesn’t matter, but…”
“It doesn’t matter for me.”
“That’s right.”
Anyway, I’ll end it quickly, so it doesn’t matter if I draw attention.
There seems no particular need to choose unnecessarily.
“What about the Guardian of the Underworld?”
“Very famous! Cerberus! Their rank is slightly lower than Uruel, but their might is incredible.”
“Ah.”
I’ve heard of it.
The gatekeeper of the Underworld, a monstrous creature with three heads, guarding the land of the dead.
Despite its fame, it appears strong…
“I wouldn’t really recommend it. While the Guardian of the Underworld is strong, there are much more superior Saints available. Also, even if you wanted to switch later, it would take a lot of effort.”
“Woof woof, though…”
“But isn’t it kind of cute? Hehe.”
“Let’s put that aside for now. Are there others?”
“Well, the Master of Non-Swordsmanship would come next, though you don’t use a sword. The One Who Chooses Fate doesn’t seem able to ‘read’ you either.”
“Hmm…”
“Perhaps something related to space would suit you…”
Both the raccoon and Leo tried to recommend the Saints that would be most beneficial to me, but they failed to interest me.
Most of them seemed weaker than the gods I had encountered in Ertarn.
If they were at the level of the ‘lion’ or ‘wolf’ I saw there, it would have been worth contracting, but disappointingly, none of those beings showed interest in me.
[Let’s just go for someone random!]
[No way, Lily still hasn’t met a god tier Saint?]
[No upper-god tier here?]
[Where are Zeus or Thor types?]
[Oh well, such a pity.]
[Let’s just go for an all-out Saint massacre.]
[Feels so unsatisfying…]
“If it’s too hard to choose, aim for floor 40. There’s another Shrine of Stars there and during the journey, if you do well, some Saints might offer you mid-journey contracts despite potential losses.”
“…”
“Alternatively, you could contract with anyone now and seek out the God of Contracts to arrange a multiple-Saint contract…”
“I’ll go with this.”
[You have contracted with the One Wearing a Carapace!]
[You inherit some of the One Wearing a Carapace’s powers.]
[Through growth or interaction with the Saint, you can enhance this power.]
[You have gained the power – Carapace Transformation LV.1.]
[You have gained the power – Carapace Weapon Sphere LV.1.]
[You now bear the rank of a lower deity.]
[The One Wearing a Carapace looks at you intensely.]
“Hey. You’ve given me a rank?”
“Eh?”
“Why would you choose…”
Both Leo and the raccoon looked at me with puzzled expressions.
After all, the option I just selected was the lowest-ranked Saint among the proposals, the One Wearing a Carapace.
A god shaped like a crab who grew up in the sea and, after a long time, ascended to the rank of a Saint but possessed extremely low rank and power.
It’s quite surprising that I would choose someone so low-ranked, given that I had previously avoided picking based on low rank and power.
In fact, my original chat window, along with this ‘Saint’ chat window, went into chaos.
[The Master of Non-Swordsmanship criticizes the foolish choice.]
[The One Who Chooses Fate feels destiny twisting.]
[Light’s Successor departs in disappointment.]
[The Guardian of the Underworld warns of death.]
[The One Who Commands Space leaves…]
[The One Wearing a Carapace is deeply moved!]
[The One Wearing a Carapace says they will do their best!!!]
Most people clearly didn’t understand.
The only one who reacted differently was the One Wearing a Carapace, who had applied almost hesitantly but managed to seal the contract.
[LOL]
[Why are they the only one moved? Feels kinda awkward.]
[But seriously, why did you choose them?]
[That was a 20:1 competition! GG!]
[GGGGG!]
[It seems the veteran gods missed out!]
[The newbie got the spot, not the experienced ones!]
[Take that, veterans!]
[Whaaaat?]
[But Lily usually picks experienced ones, so why this time?]
Swoosh…!
The majority of the gods abandoned me.
The viewers stayed in my broadcast because they still liked me, but there was no reason for the Saints to continue watching someone who made such a “foolish” choice.
By now, the number of Saints viewing, even including those who hadn’t originally offered me contracts, had dropped from around fifty to just five.
“I’ve become a small-time celebrity.”
[LOL]
[Lily becoming a small-timer?]
[Lily’s debut had ten thousand viewers, and now only five? Haha!]
[Lily is crashing…]
[Small-time Lily]
[But why did you pick that?]
“Seriously, why did you pick that one? That was just trash… not even stellar.”
“Then our friend here will be shocked.”
I stopped Leo from saying bad things.
Still, they’re somewhat divine beings; calling them trash is going too far.
[The One Wearing a Carapace says it’s okay!]
[The One Wearing a Carapace is very pleased that their first contractor has been born!]
[The One Wearing a Carapace is using World Power to enhance your powers!]
[Power – Carapace Transformation LV.2 has been reached.]
[Power – Carapace Weapon Sphere LV.2 has been reached.]
“Thank you. Now, let me test my ability.”
Creak.
I extend my hand towards the air.
And then I use the power.
“Karabus.”
Crashhh!
[Power – Carapace Weapon Sphere LV.2 being cast…]
[Skill collision. Skill level will be readjusted for recalibration.]
Clk.
[Power – Carapace Weapon Sphere LV.2(+29) is being cast.]
[The One Wearing a Carapace thinks this is not bad…]
