Chapter 893: Wails in the Night
It was as if a bolt of lightning darted through the russet woods; the flickering spear blade left a dark crimson trail in the night, piercing straight towards Evynne’s face.
Her hair and blood were whipped up by the sharp spear blade, and Evynne narrowly avoided the fatal edge. She then gripped her longsword in both hands, and a transparent armor like crystal emerged from thin air, layering itself over her body.
“Holy White Armor · Cover.” With a clear shout, Evynne’s body was enveloped in a protective holy armor. She crossed her sword again to block the piercing crimson spear tip.
The sharp sound and sparks echoed as a shallow groove was left on the sword. This opponent paid no heed to Evynne’s obstruction; their spear whirled and slashed like an antelope’s horns, occasionally slicing down electric blades that struck Evynne’s armor, causing large pieces to shatter and sparks to fly.
“Useless, Miss Evynne.”
After another clash, this female warrior stood in the open space, holding her spear with her body slightly crouched. Behind her, the soldiers who had been standing aside rushed forward. These elite legionnaires, all above War Sequence 3, worked in unison, showing remarkable discipline and combat proficiency.
War had tormented each other and taught the Empire some of the essence of Clancia, and these new legions were proof.
On Evynne’s side, despite having several Sequence 5 experts among the 300 troops, their coordination was somewhat constrained due to standing together, preventing them from fully unleashing their power and being gradually suppressed by the enemy.
“This doesn’t concern you,” Evynne raised her spear, aiming at her opponent, shielding Shalanluo behind her.
She had no time to command the battle now, or perhaps commanding wouldn’t make much difference. The most crucial thing now was defeating this Extraordinary Being of War Sequence 6. If she could defeat her, with her own Angel Sequence 6 strength, there might still be a chance.
Moreover, she wasn’t in her perfect state at the moment.
The forest echoed with the sounds of swords clashing, mixed with roars, wails, incantations, and screams. When the forest erupted into chaos and war, a resounding dragon roar finally arrived from afar.
To assist Shalanluo, Evynne had no choice but to hide her companions elsewhere. Now that they were exposed, she would have to give it her all. She was one of the few female Dragon Knights in the Empire’s Southern Region.
A white dragon silhouette raced across the night sky, its massive wings covered in small, pristine scales. It had elegant long horns, a slender neck, and a towering body exuding immense power.
Ice-like Holy Crystal dragon breath fell from the sky, sweeping through the forest and turning many trees into white ice sculptures. Some running Imperial soldiers were also frozen, becoming motionless statues. Though not immediately dead, without quick rescue, they would likely suffocate soon.
“Zzz—”
In the woods, red lightning and pure white swords clashed again. The blazing spear blade was blocked by the sword handle, while the spear tip pierced Evynne’s shoulder, tearing through her armor and leaving a warm trail of blood.
“Evynne!” Seeing this, Shalanluo panicked and prepared to step forward, but she had no weapon and doubted she could intervene in such a fight.
“Gersimi, take Shalu to safety first. The rest protect them.”
“Yes.” The personal guards following Evynne responded, and about thirty of them escorted Shalanluo, retreating amidst the chaos.
“Huh, trying to escape?” The female warrior casually swung her spear, creating a thunderclap in the air to draw the attention of nearby soldiers.
“Chase after them.” Her spear pointed directly at the fleeing figures.
“Yes!” The black-armored soldiers changed formation, some engaging the enemy while others quickly moved toward Shalanluo. Unfortunately, this pursuit was soon halted.
The Holy White dragon’s breath descended from the sky, turning the path through the woods into a crystalline snowfield, even in the darkness, bright and smooth. It blocked the black-armored soldiers, using its breath and claws to stop their advance.
Facing the dragon’s attack, these soldiers had to fully activate their Extraordinary abilities and cores, resonating with their teammates to form a brief protective barrier, then move out of range of its breath. While they saved their lives, catching up to those escaping was impossible.
“Damn it!” Seeing this, the female warrior shouted, thrusting her spear again and then retracting it. Intense magic began pouring into the black-marked spear.
Vivid and dangerous red patterns spread along the spear, intertwining like entangled serpents, finally converging at the spear tip, erupting with a red, swallowing blade.
“Come and meet your end!”
The crimson spear, like lightning, stabbed at Evynne. The white flower-entwined sword once again blocked its path. However, unlike before, this time it didn’t manage to deflect it successfully.
Like a heavy hammer, the spear blade shattered Evynne’s white cross-sword, piercing through her silver armor and her flesh, emerging from behind her, spraying a large amount of blood and debris. But the opponent didn’t stop, pushing Evynne’s body across the ground until she was pinned to a tree trunk, lifeless.
The dragon’s mournful cry echoed in the forest, and its contracted partner left this world forever.
At the edge of the mountains, Shalanluo was quickly led by Gersimi, with a team of Naitewen family’s white-armored guards following behind. Hearing the dragon’s mournful cry, she couldn’t help but look back in terror, hoping to find Evynne.
But it was all in vain. In the pitch-black night, only occasional flashes of light could be seen, remnants of Extraordinary battles, with blurry and distant figures, making it impossible to locate Evynne.
“Evynne?” She asked, her heart pounding, hoping someone would give her reassurance.
“I’m sorry, Miss Shalanluo. Our current task is to survive,” the man leading Shalanluo to see Evynne said urgently during their swift movement.
“But…” Lote was worried, fearing she would never see Evynne again.
“But we have no way back, Miss!” Gersimi’s voice came from ahead.
“My wife, my family, my children, all died in the Empire’s cleansing. All because of the Basca name!”
“How many people carry deep grudges, suppressing their anger? You’re not the only one suffering, Miss Shalanluo!”
“If you inherit the Basca family name, you must bear this burden!”
“Be the black dragon with a red belly, the harbinger of vengeance.”
