Chapter 49: The Black Shop

Chapter 49: The Black Shop

As the questioning continued, Airael’s eyes sparkled with mischief.

So, she had stumbled upon someone resembling a human trafficker, huh!

Definitely, right?

The guy in front of her must think she’s just a naive little girl who recently left home.

True, she had just stepped out of her house, but she was far from a naive little girl.

She was a mature adult!

“That’s right, you are absolutely going to love my store,” the man replied.

“What does your store sell? Are there delicious and fun things?” Airael pressed on.

Her demeanor made her look just like a silly girl.

“You can find anything you desire; you’ll experience joy beyond imagination,” the man said, barely able to contain his excitement, his eyes shining with fervor.

Tch! He really thinks I’m an idiot, huh!

Airael noted everything with her keen eyes.

Yet, she maintained her innocent girl façade and asked in an appropriately curious tone, “Oh really? So where is your store? Is it far from here? If it’s too far, that wouldn’t be convenient; I have companions nearby, you see?”

The whole act made her seem keen to explore while also apprehensive about what might happen.

Airael felt she could easily win an Oscar for her performance right then.

“It’s not far at all! Just nearby!” the man replied. “If you want to go, I can take you there right now.”

As he spoke, he moved closer to Airael.

“Is there really no danger?”

Airael took two cautious steps back to keep a safe distance.

“None! Although this is a border area, it’s a small town within the republic; under the mayor’s governance, the town’s safety is always top-notch.”

What a load of crap!

Airael scoffed inwardly.

If it were truly safe, why would a guy like you even exist?

Besides, good in the past? Now, this place feels like a powder keg about to explode.

If the Dwarves venture northward, the remaining forces in the Georgia Kingdom won’t hold out for long, and soon enough, the flames of war will reach this town.

“Maybe I should pass after all.”

Having made her mental commentary, Airael put on a cautious demeanor and politely refused.

“Miss, don’t you wish to enjoy that supreme pleasure? It’s quite a delightful experience!” The man’s face was filled with a blissful expression as he spoke.

Airael’s face showed signs of temptation, clearly torn about whether to go or not.

“If safety is still a concern, you could go back and call your companions to join. That way, you wouldn’t have to worry about danger.”

Seizing the opportunity, the man quickly added.

“No need for that; I trust you. Please, take me with you,” Airael resolved after a brief internal struggle.

In truth, this was Airael’s little scheme.

She wanted to see what kind of business this man was running—and what kind of people might be behind him.

This little town might not be as simple as she had imagined!

That way, she wouldn’t feel bored anymore.

“Thank you for your trust, Miss. Please, follow me.”

With that, the man gleefully led the way ahead for Airael.

As they walked, they ventured further off the beaten path, and soon found themselves in a narrow alley.

“This place is too remote, isn’t it? Are there really customers for a shop located here?” Airael inquired as she walked.

“Of course! And they’re all regulars. Newcomers like you can only get in if invited by someone like me,” the man replied as they walked.

Airael nodded, feigning understanding, then asked, “Doesn’t that mean many people can’t come and don’t even know about this shop?”

“Naturally! Joyful things are best when fewer people know about them; if too many know, the joy you can experience becomes diluted. It’s like sharing a cake; if you split it among three people, they each get more than if you split it among five.

So, not everyone can enjoy such joys.”

“I see! Now I understand!” Airael exclaimed in a moment of enlightenment.

Of course, she had her own interpretation in mind.

To her, this place seemed like a “members-only” establishment.

Being a shady operation, it made sense that the fewer people who knew, the better.

And the ones who knew had to be trustworthy.

With that thought, Airael’s eyes narrowed dangerously.

This absolutely was a black market operation!

Who would’ve thought that a simple outing to ease her boredom would lead her to such things?

Was this her fortune or their misfortune?

Regardless of whether they had provoked her, Airael had no good feelings toward such people.

If she could conveniently eliminate them, that would be all the better.

Meanwhile, Arthur and Cain had no idea that Airael had been whisked away by someone.

After deciding to search for Airael, the two immediately set off with a group of loyal soldiers toward the small town.

The commotion from their joint action was immense, stirring the entire military camp.

Fortunately, Arthur had made arrangements in advance, so nothing untoward occurred.

Many were left wondering what their Legion Commander was planning next.

“Are we there yet?”

After wandering deeper into the alley, Airael asked.

“Miss, please don’t be anxious; joyful things require a bit of patience. We’re almost there,” the man reassured her.

Indeed, it wasn’t long before he stopped in front of a heavily fortified large building.

“This is the place?”

“Exactly!”

After confirming, the man stepped forward to knock on the iron door.

Knock, knock, knock!

A small hole opened in the iron door, and upon seeing the man’s smiling face, the door creaked open.

But only enough to allow one person to pass through.

“Miss, come in quickly!” the man beckoned as he stepped inside first.

Airael glanced around and followed him.

She was keen to see what this place was all about.

If it truly was merely what she imagined, she’d be terribly disappointed.

Once Airael entered, the iron door was shut behind her.

The interior immediately turned dark.

Though there was some lighting, it was still quite gloomy.

Airael glanced back.

Thanks to the dim light, she could see two massive guards at the entrance, wielding halberds and shields, with armor that was anything but ordinary.

Interesting!

Airael’s lips curled into a sly smile.

She was not the least bit aware of being a victim.

Then, she continued to follow the man as he led the way.

Following his guidance, she soon arrived at an outer door of a hidden passage.

“Miss, would you please turn around for a moment?” the man requested before opening the secret door.
