Chapter 188: The Magic Mirror of Passage
The wind in the sky swept through the room, causing the gauzy curtains to flutter occasionally, making rustling sounds. The petite girl in front of her slowly stood up from her seat, using the chair to elevate herself so she could look down at Lolan Hill.
“Greetings, Mistress of the Night. I am Lolan Hill.”
Facing such a formal greeting, Lolan Hill slightly bowed. Although she appeared young, this Witch of the Book had lived for a long time. It was only natural for her to show respect as a junior member, especially since she had already received a gift upon their first meeting.
Seeing Lolan Hill’s obedient demeanor, the Witch of the Book seemed pleased. Her youthful face, like that of a bun, nodded slightly, then she beckoned a wooden chair for Lolan Hill to sit on.
After carefully reading the letter handed over by Lolan Hill, the Mistress of the Night slowly put it down.
“So you are Trinasha’s student, inheriting her legacy,” she said, her tone carrying a hint of regret, as if some matter had been preempted by someone else.
“Have you met Teacher Trinasha before, Mistress of the Night?”
“No, by the time I came into existence, the Mercury Dynasty was already gone. But I was fortunate enough to read a few of her books and learn about some things.”
“Trinasha, during the era of the Mercury Dynasty, though her reputation was not widespread, she actually changed many things. The dynasty’s laws, the decline of witches’ names in ordinary people’s eyes, the exploration of the southern wilderness, and the discovery of the eastern world—all of these were influenced by her.”
“In fact, she had long sensed the flaws within the Mercury Dynasty. During that time, the dynasty’s extreme measures were quite inhumane, but to maximize combat power and defend against other races, avoiding the fate of the Crimson Empire, there was no choice. Some things could only be done this way.”
“It was through her books that I truly understood the underlying logic of the Mercury Dynasty.”
The Witch of the Book slowly recounted some past events, some known from records and some seen with her own eyes. Then she asked Lolan Hill about her recent experiences.
“So, you still have the identity of a Merchant Guild’s Young Lady?”
“Yes.” Lolan Hill nodded with some confusion, looking at the smile on the Witch’s face, which reminded her of the scene where Tides teased her.
“Little Lolan, it seems you can switch your Sequence at will.”
“Yes.”
“And you want to learn more and try different Sequences?”
“Yes.” Lolan Hill continued nodding.
“But having two Sequences might seem strange, and you don’t want to stand out too much, right?”
“Mm-hm.” Lolan Hill agreed with a nod.
“So I have a good idea,” the Witch paused before continuing, her legs clad in stockings swaying slightly.
“I’ll arrange another identity for you, so you can enroll simultaneously. This way, no one will notice.”
“But wouldn’t that mean I can’t split myself?”
“That’s not difficult. The additional identity can be registered as a special student, with a separate dormitory and flexible class schedules. The appearance issue can be resolved by adjusting it with the pendant Tides gave you, changing your hair color and eye color.”
“This…” Lolan Hill was surprised by the Dean’s arrangement. Were all witches so playful? She had seemed quite serious earlier; was life really this boring?
“But it sounds complicated,” Lolan Hill hesitated, not wanting to live a life filled with suspicion like in a spy drama.
“Don’t refuse so quickly, Little Lolan,” the Mistress of the Night, who had picked up Tides’ habit of addressing her, smiled and two black cloth-wrapped objects floated out of a book in mid-air.
“These are for you.” She urged Lolan Hill to accept them.
“What are these?” Lolan Hill opened them to find two mirrors wrapped in black cloth.
“These are magical mirrors crafted by the Mirror Witch Chris, allowing you to travel between two locations through them.”
“This will save a lot of trouble. I’ll place the other mirror in your other dormitory.”
“Even after graduation, you can use these mirrors for many things. You know the benefits, right?”
Lolan Hill looked at the mirrors, and the system displayed their information.
[Magical Mirror of Passage] (Perfect Crystal Grade): Allows free passage between two locations via the mirror, but note that the magic mirror has certain recognition capabilities and will not serve everyone.
This defied common sense, Lolan Hill thought, her mind racing with quantum mechanics, the possibility of breaking the speed of light, achieving superluminal communication, and spatial leaps.
Damn, she couldn’t refuse. She really wanted to study these mirrors. After hesitating, Lolan Hill finally nodded. The rewards offered by this senior witch were too generous for her to resist.
“Good, let’s do that. Fill out the details of your alternate identity, and I’ll submit them to the academy for registration.”
After saying this, the Witch of the Book seemed excited, as if she had found a new toy.
Reluctantly, Lolan Hill filled out the forms and made some settings to prevent any slip-ups.
Name: Lohil
Age: 16
Features: Silver hair, blue eyes
New student from the Southern New Vergha Alliance, resembling her previous appearance in the Merchant Guild, with her features slightly altered to create a new persona.
After finishing the other details, Lolan Hill handed the paper to the Witch of the Night, who then asked her to take one of the mirrors. The other would be placed in her private dormitory.
As time passed, Lolan Hill bid farewell and left, and the observatory on the top floor gradually quieted down.
“That junior is quite adorable.”
A clearly different voice echoed in the empty room, but the Mistress of the Night didn’t seem surprised, instead responding.
“So, shall we make a bet?”
“On what?” the sweet voice replied with interest.
“Bet that despite trying to hide herself, Little Lolan will soon become well-known throughout the academy.”
A princess dressed in a pink and white gown appeared in the room, standing behind the Mistress of the Night and lifting her up suddenly.
“Didn’t expect you to change too, Mistress of the Night. You used to be the one most often teased, yet now you’re bullying a junior like this, hehe~”
“Put me down, Chris.”
The petite form of the Mistress of the Night kicked and smacked the book against Chris’ head.
