Chapter 47: The Vampire
Time quietly slipped by. After Celia and Aurora left, Arthur found two maids of similar stature to take care of Airael.
Though the two maids might not have the strength of Celia and Aurora, their skills as professional maids far surpassed the duo.
Airael, despite enjoying their company, still felt a bit uneasy about their presence.
They would listen to her, but they were different from Celia and Aurora.
There were some things she could say to Celia and Aurora that she couldn’t share with them.
And when she wanted to practice her martial arts, the two maids weren’t fit to spar with her like Celia and Aurora could.
“Sigh!”
Within her private tent, Airael let out a deep sigh.
After sighing, feeling bored, she decided to take a stroll.
As she stepped out of the tent, the two maids standing guard instinctively moved to follow her, but Airael immediately stopped them, saying, “You don’t need to follow me. I’m just going for a walk. You two go back and rest!”
After saying that, Airael ignored them and headed toward the nearby stable.
“Understood! Miss Ailia!”
The two replied together and then bowed to withdraw.
Arriving at the stable, Airael expertly led her horse out and leapt onto its back.
“Go!”
With a firm squeeze of her legs, the horse took off galloping through the military camp.
Luckily, the camp was well-organized, with designated paths for the horses to run on.
Thus, Airael quickly made her way to the camp entrance.
Just then, Cain came marching in, covered in dirt and dust.
Arthur had his own tasks, and as the vice-legion commander, Cain had his duties too.
His tasks were simple to explain, overseeing border patrols and handling various emergencies.
Although simple, it involved a substantial workload.
Every day he had to lead people on patrols.
As Airael was about to head out, she ran into Cain at the entrance.
Seeing each other, both stopped.
Cain looked at Airael and asked first, “Miss Ailia, where are you off to?”
“I’m a bit bored staying in the camp, so I thought I’d take a walk.”
“By yourself?”
Cain frowned slightly, speaking with some concern for Airael.
“That’s right.”
Airael nodded, then looked at Cain and his disheveled appearance, asking, “What’s happened to you?”
“We just participated in a battle, Miss Ailia. The level of chaos here far exceeds your imagination. If you’re going outside, it’s best to take some guards with you.”
“C’mon, Cain! I’m strong! I can take care of myself, plus this is my personal matter. I don’t want to trouble everyone.”
Cain shook his head and continued, “This isn’t the Northern Border, it’s quite chaotic here. Our only enemies are the orcs. In this place, there’s a mix, and even humans could be our enemies, not to mention non-humans.”
“Non-humans? Are there dwarves around?”
“Indeed, there are some dwarf scouts sneaking around, but it’s not just dwarves.”
“What other races?”
Airael asked with interest.
“Recently, vampires have emerged nearby!”
At this, Cain’s expression turned serious.
Vampires had strong abilities, and when they disguised themselves, they could pass for ordinary people.
Thus, during their ambush on the vampires, they faced a great deal of difficulty, losing many and achieving little.
Airael’s expression also turned grave.
In the past, due to the unique abilities of vampires, they had thrived for a time.
However, after three large-scale wars, they had completely fallen.
The first was the battle between elves and vampires when the Elven Race was at its peak, easily crushing the vampires and their undead troops.
The second was a straightforward battle between humans and vampires that happened long ago.
Faced with the significant threat of vampires, humans, who had already established control over the continent, banded together to defeat them.
Then came the time of Alexander the Great, who, after uniting the Human Race three hundred years ago, effectively dealt with all races, including vampires.
Since then, vampires had lost their homes.
They could only struggle to survive in the dark world.
Now, it seemed that in this chaotic era, some folks were getting restless.
Airael thought to herself.
Seeing Airael’s expression, Cain knew she was aware of what vampires were capable of, so he spoke up, “Miss Ailia, you should know the dangers of vampires—they’re a troublesome existence, so you must be careful.”
Airael replied nonchalantly, “I’ll be careful. But while vampires are tricky, I’m not afraid of them. If they come after me, I could help you guys clean up these pests!”
Seeing Airael’s nonchalance, Cain felt a surge of helplessness.
In the military, Airael’s existence was quite unique.
Although she held no formal position, her status in the army was not inferior to his.
Not only because of her relationship with Arthur—which was a small part—but primarily because of her own strength.
Especially after the battle at Malong Fortress, her prestige in the army had reached its peak.
However, even though Airael was powerful, humans make mistakes, just like horses can stumble.
If Airael wasn’t careful and got ambushed by vampires, the situation would be quite dire.
Seeing Cain say no more, Airael didn’t want to waste time and said, “Cain, you really don’t need to worry too much about me. I’m just heading to a nearby small town. You just got back from outside, so hurry up and go rest!”
With that, Airael dashed out of the military camp.
Cain watched Airael leave, sighed, and told the people behind him, “You all go back. I’ll find the Legion Commander.”
“Yes!”
Then Cain headed to Arthur’s office tent.
“Cain, how did things go?” Arthur asked, looking up from the map as he saw him.
Cain lowered his head, feeling guilty, “That guy got away; it’s my fault. Please punish me, Commander.”
“It seems we underestimated those vampires,” Arthur breathed out instead of discussing punishment.
Hearing this, Cain said, “Those vampires not only have strong abilities, but their magic is also quite unique, making it hard to defend against.”
