Chapter Thirty-Six The Tavern (Part One)
[Forgive-head.]
After writing this name that I hadn’t called in a long time, I paused, bit on the feather quill for a moment to think, then continued writing.
How has the secret fruit tree in the garden grown since we last met? Are the leaves as green as your head?
Yes, I’ve returned from the desert of the Eastern Continent with new seeds. Surprised? Shocked?
But I can’t go back yet because I need to visit my hometown first. I need to check if the wheat fields are safe and if there are any pests that don’t fear the snowstorms. I guess there probably are.
Give my regards to the owner of the garden and tell her I miss her very much. Warn her about the garden’s creditors, who are dangerous and crazy, with meticulous thoughts and many unknown informants, more than we can imagine. So she mustn’t act rashly.
By the way, Miss Lilith also asked me to entrust you with something.
Wishing you well.
I believe we’ll meet soon, but please don’t seek me out.
Yes, this should be enough.
After finishing, I laid down the pen, picked up the paper, read it over twice, and upon finding no issues, folded it and handed it to Lilith: “Show this note to the person with green hair.”
Lilith took the paper, looking quite surprised.
In front of me, she didn’t dare look at what was written, only widening her beautiful eyes to look at me, blinking and hesitating, “Do you know them?”
“Perhaps.”
I casually replied, “I’m not one hundred percent sure, so you need to give this letter to him quickly and observe his reaction when he reads it. If I’m right, after reading the letter, he will immediately ask where I am. Don’t tell him where I am; just have Barry leave with him. Tell him it’s not the right time to meet; I’ll find him if necessary.”
As I said, I paused.
But if he looks bewildered after reading the letter, not understanding its meaning or even guessing who wrote it, you should turn around and leave without mentioning anything about me, and take the letter with you. Burn it somewhere, and we’ll make other plans for Barry.”
If the green-haired man Lilith mentioned is really Reckt, he would instantly understand who wrote the letter just by looking at the salutation.
Because only I would call him Forgive-head.
Even though he doesn’t know the true intent behind the nickname, it doesn’t matter. Once he knows I wrote the letter, the rest of the content would be clear.
If nothing unexpected happens, I believe that guy is Forgive-head.
Although I’m not sure why he appeared in Aretion City at this time, I think it’s probably because of some things related to me, Vicky, and she’s very unwilling.
Did she see or guess something long ago? After all, she’s quite clever.
But precisely because of this, for the Church or Angel, Vicky might be the most important person to watch or monitor. Any hint of movement could put her in grave danger.
So I risked trying to have Forgive-head bring the message that I’m still alive to her, to reassure her that things are far more complicated than she thinks. She shouldn’t do anything that might raise suspicion, like sending Reckt here to investigate me.
That’s too dangerous.
She doesn’t fully understand the stakes involved, not knowing the hidden side of the Church. I fear she might make a mistake.
Once she does, it will be irreversible.
— …
Quickly, I sorted through these thoughts in my mind. Still thinking about Barry alone in the room, I patted Lilith’s shoulder and told her, “Jasmine Lane might not last long. You don’t need to come anymore. If everything goes smoothly, three days from now, bring people to the west gate of the city. I’ll have Barry meet you there, and we’ll leave.”
“Okay.”
Lilith nodded seriously.
I didn’t say anything more, waved her off, and jumped out of the carriage, not looking back, walking briskly towards the tavern.
The carriage pulled away slowly.
The street lights were bright, but there were few people around.
I hadn’t gone far when I turned the corner back to Jasmine Lane, walking down the alleyway for less than five minutes before I saw the small building of the tavern — the lights inside were brighter, casting a dim glow around the entrance. From afar, I could hear the noise coming from the first floor, making it the liveliest spot at the end of Jasmine Lane.
If not for those hiding in the shadows, the starving refugees wandering the city,
And without all these disturbances,
This place, once emotions settled, wouldn’t be too boring or frustrating even if I stayed for a few more days.
Hmm?
Suddenly, my steps paused.
In my line of sight, the tavern building, which seemed increasingly closer, looked peaceful from the outside. But the window of my room on the second floor…
It was half-open. Not good.
My eyes narrowed, my body crouched slightly, and I pushed off the ground with my right foot, launching myself into action. Instantly, I stepped into the Moonwalk. *Bam*—
The dull sound echoed across the empty street, accompanied by scattered stones and dust. The tavern seemed to draw nearer in an instant, and I leaped into the air. My cloak fluttered behind me like the wings of a great bird, directly crossing to the second floor. I landed on the windowsill with a ‘clang’, shattering the frame, and the window shattered, flying inward and hitting someone inside.
“Who—”
“This kid has a friend!”
Damn it—
Unexpectedly, the small room descended into chaos. Several figures shouted and moved, waving weapons toward the window.
“Seeking death…”
I used my momentum to kick the first person charging at me, a large, muscular man who had no resistance. He spat blood as he was kicked, flew backward, and knocked over two others behind him. Their short knives, meant for cutting meat, slipped from their hands and they rolled and screamed until they crashed into the door, knocking over a rack and lying motionless on the ground.
“Hill sister!”
Before I could steady myself after landing,
