Chapter 18 Chaotic Tranquility
Smack!
The thick, powerful arm was halfway out when I grabbed his wrist lightning-fast and held on tightly.
The drunk man was taken aback at first.
He seemed unprepared for a poor, short child to actually dare resist him. A trace of mockery and derision unconsciously appeared on the man’s flushed face.
He glanced back at his companion, and they exchanged a smile. When he turned back, there was a sinister look in his hazy eyes.
“You f*ck…”
However, the dirty words were cut off mid-sentence— the man pulled hard with his arm, intending to drag me to him, but unexpectedly found that he couldn’t move it at all. He realized then that the five slender fingers gripping his wrist were as strong as iron tongs.
“…Huh?”
The smile on the man’s face slowly froze. He didn’t believe it and spat out a breath of alcohol, pulling harder with his arm. But again, he couldn’t move it, and instead stumbled forward, nearly falling onto me.
“Really stinks…”
The pungent smell of alcohol immediately hit me, like the scent of vomit after drinking. I frowned and leaned my head back in disgust, then started to pull his hand with force.
“You uh… Ah, ah! Let go, let go—”
The man cried out in pain instantly, his expression twisted in agony. His eyes wide with disbelief, he shouted to his companion, “F*ck, hurry up and help!”
“Hahahaha—”
But his companion was already quite drunk and laughed uncontrollably, pointing at him and saying to the woman who looked uncertainly, “Look, look, he always likes to do these silly tricks… Hey Lagus! What’s wrong with you? Haha, what about being the bravest man in the Second Knight Order? How could you not even beat a kid? Hahaha…”
His companion laughed so hard he couldn’t catch his breath, but the man whose wrist I was holding had become savage-looking. In pain, he gritted his teeth and lost the strength to struggle, arching backward, his legs bending, and kneeling on one knee.
“Stop, stop… wait, damn it, do you know who I am… do you know who I am! Ah…”
“The Second Knight Order.”
I said calmly, slightly loosening my grip and not breaking his arm directly. My eye under the hood looked at him, the pupil faintly bloodshot, “You’re different from the knights I’ve seen before… though I’ve never met anyone from the Second Knight Order, I do have some understanding of the faith and spirit of knights.”
“…You are…”
The man seemed to realize something.
But I ignored his increasingly suspicious and ugly expression: “Fighting, drinking… they might do such things, but they would never yell at a passing lady and threaten her by saying ‘Do you know who I am?’ That kind of thing is only for troublemakers… well, I wouldn’t be surprised if it came from someone like you.”
“Hahaha, Lagus, did you hear that? She said you’re a troublemaker! Hahaha—”
His companion continued laughing at him, but the woman standing next to him sensed something was wrong. Her expression showed unease as she lowered her head and looked around, seemingly planning to leave.
“Who… are you…”
The burly man glared at me, his eyes bloodshot, grinding his teeth.
Of course, I wouldn’t answer his question.
In fact, if he hadn’t come looking for trouble himself, I wouldn’t waste time on someone like him. Though I had many questions, I knew nothing useful could be learned from a drunkard. I didn’t want to smell his stench anymore.
“Leave, before I change my mind.”
The man pulled back his hood slightly, and his crimson eyes shot out a fierce killing intent. The burly man trembled suddenly, as if he had been stared at by a venomous creature. His mouth opened, emitting “Huhuhu” sounds, not daring to move an inch.
“Let’s leave here…”
I turned and walked away.
After a few steps, I could still hear his companion’s laughter: “Hahaha, Lagus, you coward, did you just let her go? When did you become so kind… Hey! You, come back…”
He seemed to be calling me from behind.
“Who said I would let you go…”
“Hold on, let her go and don’t cause trouble! Listen to me—”
“What are you talking about! What’s wrong? It’s just a child, what are you afraid of!”
“Come back! You damned drunkard…”
“How about we make a bet? I can tell that she’s just a little girl. She must be very hungry to have come here. I’ll bet one silver coin that she won’t follow me…”
Slap.
Footsteps came from behind, and a hand landed on my shoulder.
“I was saying…”
The burly man’s companion leaned in, and his drunken voice had only uttered two words when I turned and punched him right in the stomach.
Bang!
A muffled sound.
His figure flew backward.
It didn’t matter whether they were truly members of the Second Order or not, neither of them was wearing armor today, both dressed in civilian clothes. I hadn’t even put much effort into this punch, but the moment my fist touched the man’s abdomen, a terrifying wind pressure surged out. His feet left the ground instantly, his body almost folding like a shrimp, and he shot off toward the distant street.
“Aah!”
“Yaaahhh—”
Screams and shouts erupted from all directions. This punch hadn’t affected any passersby, but the huge commotion had frightened them greatly.
The men fighting nearby stopped abruptly, and a passing carriage nearly veered onto the sidewalk. The prostitutes watching the scene screamed and ran away, and the woman with freckles also shouted and ran off, leaving the burly man standing there, dumbfounded, probably sobering up quickly. His companion had just rushed past him into the alleyway behind, knocking over countless baskets and tumbling into the mud, head down and feet up, motionless.
“Oh my God…”
“What did I just see…”
“It must be the power of order…”
“Is that person dead…”
Amidst the chaos, noisy discussions filled the air. Those with smaller courage had long fled, while those who remained dared to get closer for a better look. The burly man stood among the crowd closing in, his eyes filled with fear, unable to say another word to me for a long time.
“If you keep standing there, he will die.”
After saying this, I turned and left again. The crowd automatically made way for me. Not far away, I heard the man shouting behind me: “How dare you injure a church knight! I will issue a warrant for your arrest! I will find you! You won’t escape this city anymore—”
Though his voice was full of anger, it lacked conviction, and his tone broke at the end.
Really…
Such boring people, such trivial matters.
The Church Knights…
I thought someone would come soon—guards or something—to question me and try to capture me, given that I had seemingly killed someone in public. I had prepared myself for more mundane troubles, but after walking through the streets for a long time, no one approached to interrogate me. Even those who had initially watched the spectacle soon dispersed, and within five minutes, it was as if nothing had happened. People continued their fights, drinking, and other activities.
The street returned to its previous state of chaotic tranquility.
Not long after, I arrived at the door of a tavern, tilted my head in thought, and stopped.
