Chapter 8: Stirring Up Trouble – Part 2
Whoosh whoosh whoosh—
The wind blew through Ling Feng’s long hair, whistling past his ears.
Five hundred meters… three hundred meters… one hundred… thirty…
Since the “Calivere” merchant ship took off, slicing through the night to fly two kilometers towards the tall tower, I did not spread my black wings and did not rely much on the frost mist for propulsion. I almost entirely relied on the power of my physical cultivation, even worrying that the speed might be too fast and cause too much noise. As I approached the tower, I deliberately slowed down — even so, it only took me a few breaths to cover the two-kilometer distance.
In an instant, the tower was right below my feet.
Under the night sky, the stone tower stood alone, hundreds of meters away from the city walls. Around the tower was a vast beach, dotted with some simple and secretive barracks. Most of these barracks were unlit, but many knights carried torches, patrolling as if they were on high alert, searching for something or guarding against something.
On top of the tower, lights flickered, and flames shone through the huge arched stone windows. The light shimmered, but there seemed to be no one standing there.
…It should be fine if I just descend from the air. No one would notice me.
Even if they do notice, it doesn’t matter…
I shrugged, my expression calm in the darkness, casually scanning the area below. I felt the pull of gravity starting to drag my body downward. At the same time, I immediately flipped and twisted, like a gliding hawk, plummeting straight down from the night sky. I gently pushed out the frost mist to slow down, and with a “thud,” landed on the protruding steps of the tower waist. Then, I quickly leaned against the wall, hiding my small body in the shadow outside the arched stone window, pulling up my hood.
“Drag them away! Drag them away!”
Voices could clearly be heard below the tower.
“Whether dead or alive, drag all of them behind the tower… find a place to bury them, clean up the blood…”
“Creis! Did you find anything?”
“It seems there are still two who escaped…”
“Don’t worry, they won’t run far. The captain went after them personally…”
I followed the sound and looked down. The first thing I saw was a knight dragging an unconscious or dead figure, talking to someone while slowly walking toward the tower.
Not far away, several other unconscious or dead figures lay scattered. Looking around, about ten or so knights were near the barracks, but more people had already raised their torches and were searching further away.
In the darkness, I could vaguely see some spots on the beach and the stone steps in front of the tower stained with vivid blood.
Here…
It seems like something happened here recently.
That crew member of the “Calivere” who shouted “knights killed someone” at the bow of the ship must have come here to attend the council with the captain and the others. Something suddenly happened, causing chaos, and then he managed to escape amid the confusion, wanting to send news of what happened back to the “Calivere.”
…So where is the sailmaster?
Is he inside the tower…
I remained expressionless, withdrawing my gaze from the tower below. I poked my head out from the edge of the arched stone, peering quietly inside the tower—this entrance leads directly to the middle section of the tower. But it seemed like there was no sound inside. Could the council have been held downstairs…? Everyone must be downstairs?
But there didn’t seem to be any activity downstairs either…
…Forget it.
I might as well take a quick look.
So I bent down to adjust my cloak, stepping out from the shadow behind the arched stone, crossing the steps to enter the tower. The bottom of my cloth shoes made a “creak, creak” sound as they touched the old wooden boards—it wasn’t loud but quite noticeable—I didn’t really try to hide it.
The middle level of the tower was empty… it probably was empty upstairs as well. It looked like this place had been abandoned for a long time, though the candles on the walls illuminated the interior of the tall tower brightly.
This floor was larger than expected, but everything inside was…
Everything was very old, as if it hadn’t been cared for in many years. The wooden boards and frames were severely decayed, with holes everywhere from rats or insects. In the corners, there were many messy and dirty boxes of miscellaneous items, and the air was filled with a pungent and unpleasant odor. This made me recall the bell tower of CataLoma. Tonight’s scene… was so similar to that.
But at that time, the accelerated heartbeat, the sensation of blood surging through my body, an indescribable sense of tension and pressure, has completely disappeared now.
I almost carelessly walked down the stairs.
One floor down, then another floor down, the creaking footsteps became clearer, completely unmasked. I could already hear the rustling sounds from the bottom floor, the dragging of heavy objects, mixed with a few faint conversations. Those voices gradually faded away, and the door of the tower seemed to close with a creak.
There were people below…
But had they left?
As soon as this thought emerged, someone spoke from below: “Hey, did you hear anything…”
Oh…
They were still here.
“What?”
“Creaking… footsteps?”
“… Must be mice.”
“It doesn’t feel like it…”
Slightly doubtful conversation came from downstairs. I didn’t stop but quickened my pace instead, heading towards the stairs leading to the first floor of the tower.
“Should we go up and check…”
“… Not necessary, right?”
“There’s no one at the top, it must be something like mice…”
The conversation continued below. It sounded like only two people, standing to the slightly right side on the first floor… yes, the knights outside seemed to have moved far away.
“That’s not right…”
“It’s footsteps!”
“Who—”
“Clang, clang” after two sword hilt sounds, the people below seemed to intend to move toward this direction. However, before they could truly act, in the next instant, I descended the stairs, stepping into their astonished gaze.
Dark eyes quickly scanned the first floor of the tower.
Thick stone walls, the lights on the walls still brightly lit, the space on the first floor seemed larger… The large door on the left side of the tower was already closed, and from outside, no one would notice this place. The entire room was empty, but there were more than one trail of dragged blood on the ground, the blood not yet cleaned, looking shockingly vivid.
It seemed the disturbance started from here. I followed the direction of the bloodstains, looking up, seeing the red marks eventually converge into another double-door on the side of the room. That door was also tightly shut, and the two silver-armored knights guarding the door had already drawn their swords, widening their eyes, about to charge at me.
But I wasn’t concerned.
I slowly walked down the stairs, frowning slightly. Only now did I remember that when I arrived, I vaguely saw a shorter annex building behind the tower — so these double doors led to that annex building.
“Who’s there!”
“You are—”
Moonwalk.
Bang!
Stepping out, the wooden steps cracked, a muffled sound erupted, and a petite figure flashed, appearing in front of the two knights in the next moment. She then lightly jumped, casually grabbing two heads, and with a slight effort, slammed them together.
Then, the shouting abruptly stopped.
Clang, clang—
The knights’ swords dropped to the ground, their eyes rolled back, and their bodies slumped down, twitching.
I might have been a bit too forceful…
But this wasn’t anything worth worrying about. As I casually thought, I stepped over their fallen bodies and approached the double doors. Raising my hand to push the door, I then tilted my head, turned around to look, and waited a little while, hearing no footsteps outside.
I shrugged indifferently and turned my attention back to the double wooden doors in front of me.
Cabin…
Were they here?
I raised both hands and pushed the door open with a bang.
