Chapter 265

“I’m so full!”

“Me too!”

Our group, having devoured all the hot dogs, sat on a nearby bench, clutching our now-bulging stomachs. A child’s stomach is just too small. If I had eaten these hot dogs back when I was a guy, I’d probably still be hungry.

“Where are we going next, Hana?” Jiyu asked me. Hearing her question, I pulled out the amusement park map from my pocket and unfolded it dramatically, like a treasure hunter searching for gold. We began deciding our next destination.

“How about riding some rides?” Jiyu suggested, seemingly forgetting we just stuffed ourselves with hot dogs. I gave her a serious look. Jiyu might have an iron stomach, but I definitely don’t. If I got on a ride right now, I’d probably end up painting the sky with rainbows.

“We already rode so many earlier!” I said with a stern face, causing Jiyu to shrink back a little. Even Jiyu had to admit that riding rides right now wasn’t the best idea. We’d been on rides all morning before stuffing ourselves with food.

“Heehee…” Yumi, who had been watching us, chimed in. She seemed to have a place in mind that she’d been wanting to visit.

“How about here? I want to see pandas!” Yumi pointed at a spot on the map labeled “Panda World,” where pandas were kept. Panda World seemed like a must-visit spot for anyone coming to the amusement park. Apparently, it was so popular that it even boosted the park’s revenue significantly.

Even with the costs of renting pandas from China, breeding fees, and other expenses, the park still made a profit. That says it all. I also wanted to see pandas, so I nodded in agreement with Yumi’s suggestion. Jiyu’s eyes sparkled with excitement too.

“I want to see pandas too!” Jiyu exclaimed, bouncing around like a kid. She was so excited, it was almost comical. With our destination set, we headed toward Panda World. It was a bit of a walk, but no big deal—we had strong legs!

And considering I’d marched dozens of kilometers in the past with heavy military gear, this distance was nothing. Though, honestly, I don’t even remember how I managed that back then. I think I just stared at the sky and kept going…

——————————————–

“*Huff huff*…”

I leaned against a wall, gasping for air. The distance didn’t seem that far, but it was exhausting. My stamina was clearly not what it used to be. Maybe I should start exercising again. Jiyu and Yumi, noticing my struggle, looked concerned.

“Hana, are you okay?” Yumi asked, patting my back. I nodded to show I was fine, though I couldn’t speak because I was still catching my breath.

“Hana looks really tired!” Jiyu said. I quickly pretended I was fine. It was embarrassing to be this worn out after such a short walk. Luckily, after resting a bit, I started feeling better.

“Look at the line!” Yumi pointed ahead. The line to see the pandas was so long that we’d have to wait at least two hours. Pandas were clearly a big hit. But we decided to wait anyway. The good news was that they let dozens of people in at a time, so the line moved relatively quickly.

Still, waiting two hours even with that system felt ridiculous. There was an option to buy an expensive ticket to skip the line, but I regretted not getting one. With the money I had, I could’ve even bought tickets for Jiyu and Yumi and still had some left over.

Oh well, no use crying over spilled milk. We had no choice but to wait. Thankfully, chatting with Jiyu and Yumi made the time fly by.

After two hours, we finally made it into the panda enclosure. I’d seen pandas on YouTube, but this was my first time seeing them in person. I followed the employee’s guidance and stepped inside, full of anticipation.

——————————————————

Nationwide, Idaya supplied Starlight Coffee Beans. Now that they had secured enough stock, they could supply coffee beans not just to Seoul, but also to major cities in the provinces. They were even planning to open more coffee shops.

Not just in major provincial cities, but also in…

Idaya had the bold idea of opening stores even in quiet rural villages, like a hamburger shop. It was a thought that other coffee shops didn’t even dare to consider.

Anyway, they were selling Starlight Coffee Beans even in the provinces. The local store managers could feel the increase in customers, but there was a separate place that showed exactly how much it had increased in numbers.

“2 times… 3 times… 4 times…!”

The sales department at Idaya’s headquarters, which manages nationwide sales. Lee Jin-tae, an assistant manager working there, couldn’t help but marvel at the monitor. It was the first time he had seen such a graph in his years of working there.

“How did we get these numbers in just a week…?”

Assistant Manager Lee jumped up from his seat. He had to share this good news. And Director Moon Ji-seop was standing there, waiting for his answer. The difference in rank between an assistant manager and a director was like heaven and earth.

“Idaya’s sales… sales have increased fourfold compared to last week!”

“Wow!”

The sales department was filled with cheers upon hearing Lee Jin-tae’s words. Even if Idaya’s sales were a drop in the bucket compared to Starbucks, this level of increase was encouraging. It was a fourfold increase from the existing sales, which was no small feat.

Director Moon Ji-seop smiled with satisfaction and clapped. This achievement was the result of his decision to introduce Starlight Food’s coffee beans. It was a step closer to moving up in the executive ranks.

And what he really liked was that with such a rise in sales, it was clear that the sales of competing coffee companies had naturally decreased. Coffee sales were a zero-sum game. If people drank Idaya’s coffee, the sales of other coffee shops naturally declined.

Customers who were fully satisfied with Idaya’s coffee had no reason to drink coffee from other places. Of course, the opposite was also true.

“Congratulations, Director!”

The sales department head rubbed his hands together and praised Director Moon Ji-seop. Director Moon listened to the praise and then quietly raised his hand. Good was good, but there was still a long way to go.

To aim for the top spot in the domestic coffee market, there was a very tough road ahead. For starters, the sales gap between Idaya and Starbucks, the domestic coffee sales leader, was more than tenfold. When Starbucks’ sales hit 3 trillion won, Idaya’s sales were barely scraping 200 billion won.

Without Starlight Coffee Beans, it would have been a David and Goliath battle. It was impossible to compete. It was strange to even think of competing when the sales gap was more than tenfold.

Before introducing Starlight Coffee Beans, they had to quietly follow in Starbucks’ footsteps, but now it was different. They had gained a weapon to move ahead, and this weapon was sharp and ready. Enough to make Goliath Starbucks feel threatened.

As Director Moon Ji-seop raised his hand, the office quieted down. Wasn’t this the influence of a director? Maybe it was this kind of power that made people desire to climb higher. Power was sweet, after all. Some people would even risk their lives to hold onto it.

“I think we still have a long way to go. First, Manager Kim, call Starlight Food and secure more coffee bean supplies. And Assistant Manager Lee, check that advertisement we made last time again. There are a lot of illustrators these days who put weird phrases in ads. Make sure there’s nothing that could be picked apart. Yoo Sa-won? Conduct a survey with our franchisees, check for complaints, and ask what’s lacking. We need to row while the water is rising. If not now, we might not get another chance. And…”

Director Moon Ji-seop made the most of the authority given to him. Instead of getting carried away by the big success, he clearly laid out the path ahead. Once the framework was set, the rest would be handled by the team below. That was the role of a company superior.
