Chapter 124: Aren’t you afraid I’ll tell Mom?
Due to the inconsistent progress of middle schools across different regions, the specialized county student admission exam conducted by Jiangcheng No. 1 High School Affiliated in 2011 only covered Chinese, Math, and English.
Although there were fewer subjects, the test was quite challenging, especially the math section which included some advanced inequality knowledge that had appeared in previous years’ papers, so it wasn’t entirely unexpected.
Before the exam, Mei Fang, Lin You Xi, and Xia Yuan had already practiced extensively. During the exam, they encountered similar difficult problems, particularly in math. After completing the exam, they briefly compared their answers, and apart from Xia Yuan who did slightly worse in math, everything else seemed fine.
Xia Yuan was relatively satisfied with her performance in this exam. After finishing, she kept clinging to You Xi, enjoying their closeness.
“I envy you guys… This feels like a huge relief.”
The next day, Xia Yuan still had an art specialty interview, so she couldn’t completely relax yet. Lin You Xi patted Xia Yuan’s hand, encouraging her.
As they admired the campus of Jiangcheng No. 1 High School Affiliated, it happened to be dismissal time for high school students.
Jiangcheng No. 1 High School Affiliated required uniform attire, but Xia Yuan didn’t find it excessive and even felt a bit envious.
“Their uniforms are so beautiful, almost like sailor uniforms from Sakura Country! Oh right, I heard many youth love dramas are filmed here.”
“Indeed, just look at the environment.”
Mei Fang paused before continuing, “Jiangcheng No. 1 High School has always believed in giving students more free time. They never occupy holidays or weekends, and even high school juniors and seniors don’t have evening exams. Even if you skip them, as long as you have enough courage.”
“How can you perform so well with such a relaxed schedule? It’s even more comfortable than our middle school!”
“Of course, their students are the best in the entire Chu North Province. The rest depends on individual self-discipline. If someone relies solely on teachers for supervision, they might not be suitable for this school even if their grades are good.”
“Are you worried about getting distracted?”
Xia Yuan nodded, “Thankfully, we have a three-person study group to keep each other in check! By the way, if we didn’t motivate each other, who do you think would slack off first? I vote for A Fang.”
Mei Fang looked surprised, “Ah? You’ve always thought that?”
Xia Yuan nodded, “Think about it, when you were in elementary school, you often skipped homework and daydreamed in class. On holidays, you either played games or coded. Without me reminding and supervising you every day, you wouldn’t have studied properly, right?”
“That was efficient learning, I could finish two years’ worth of elementary school material in one year.”
“But I think I’m important too.”
Xia Yuan puffed up her cheeks, “Don’t you think so?”
Forget it, no point arguing with a child.
Mei Fang helplessly agreed, “There’s some truth to what you say… How about you, You Xi, do you think I’d slack off?”
Lin You Xi shook her head, “I think it would be me who would slack off.”
“What?”
Lin You Xi’s words surprised both Xia Yuan and Mei Fang, “You used to think that way?”
“When I was in elementary school, I worked hard because Yuan Yuan motivated me.”
Lin You Xi smiled, “Yuan Yuan has always been my role model. Since childhood, I followed her around, and seeing her work hard inspired me to do the same.”
“That’s all in the past, it doesn’t matter now…”
Xia Yuan humbly said, but couldn’t hide her excitement, hugging Lin You Xi tightly, “After middle school, you became my role model, Super Scholar Lin You Xi.”
“I don’t think being a role model is solely about having the best grades; it’s more about attitude. So Yuan Yuan remains my role model.”
“But attitude needs to translate into actual results!”
“I think Yuan Yuan has done incredibly well. Just think about it…”
Mei Fang, watching the two girls praising each other, couldn’t help but interject, “None of you think I could be a role model too! I think I’m pretty impressive.”
“Get lost, A Fang! That’s not your concern!”
Mei Fang was playfully chased by the two girls. Xia Yuan finally mentioned their plans.
“I have another exam tomorrow, but I can finish the art specialty test in the morning. On the way here, I made plans with You Xi to go to Happy Valley after I finish. Would you like to join us, A Fang?”
“Uh, Happy Valley…”
Mei Fang covered his mouth, waving his hands, “I can accompany you, but some rides are out of the question.”
“Oh… What… Why…”
Xia Yuan imitated a girl from a Japanese anime, circling around Mei Fang, “My dear A Fang, are you scared of roller coasters?”
“A Fang has always been timid. Let’s not pressure him. We can still have fun together.”
Lin You Xi’s words sounded mocking, but Mei Fang couldn’t stand it.
“Hey, what’s wrong with you two… Haven’t we watched enough ghost movies? Don’t you remember those two crybabies who got scared and cried during ghost movies, couldn’t sleep at night, and needed me to stay with them?”
Mei Fang wiped away tears, “Oh, it’s really sad, really sad…”
“That was just the first time watching a ghost movie! We’re better now!”
Xia Yuan blushed, indignant, “Ghost movies and roller coasters are different. A Fang, if you’re afraid of heights, don’t go!”
“Go, why shouldn’t I?” Mei Fang pinched Xia Yuan’s cheek, “First, I’m not forced by your challenge. And—”
Just as Mei Fang was about to continue, a senior high school girl hurried over:
“Hey, who are you? Why aren’t you wearing your school uniform? Which class are you from?”
Mei Fang quickly explained, “We’re not high school students… We’re here for the specialized county student admission exam.”
“You’re middle school students?”
The girl pushed her glasses up, examining the trio closely. One was 170 cm tall, another had long legs, and the third seemed to have a C-cup. Thinking about her own slim figure, she muttered, “Middle school students these days develop so well…”
To avoid affecting their exam performance, Xia Yuan decided to end the topic about going out early.
With Mei Lijun’s tight schedule, he planned to return home to spend a couple of days with his daughter after accompanying Mei Fang for the exam. Liang Meijuan also felt she shouldn’t burden Xia Xun further, so she offered to ride back with Mei Lijun.
While Xia Xun accompanied his daughter for the exam in the morning, Lin You Xi went shopping with Liang Meijuan. Meanwhile, Mei Fang and Mei Lijun slept until 11 am. When Lin You Xi returned from shopping, Mei Lijun treated everyone to a meal.
Xia Xun and Mei Lijun met in kindergarten, where Mei Lijun was just a small clerk while Xia Xun was already a well-known young entrepreneur in town.
Even though Mei Lijun is now a deputy director, Xia Xun still addresses him as “Lijun Brother” or “Director Mei,” showing great respect. Mei Lijun prefers not to show off and lets Xia Xun take the lead, maintaining a somewhat distant relationship.
Now, it’s rare for him to have the chance to take charge in front of several families. His closeness with You Xi’s father, Lin Guochuan, makes him feel at ease talking with Liang Meijuan. They chatted non-stop during dinner, and Liang Meijuan, fearing the deputy director, remained obedient and didn’t dare contradict him.
Though his father tried hard, he came across as more of a talkative neighbor than a deputy director.
“Oh, I wish these three kids could all get into Jiangcheng No. 1 High School Affiliated. Then they could support each other in Jiangcheng.”
Mei Lijun sighed, “Meijuan, you don’t know how close these kids have been since childhood, practically inseparable. My son Mei Fang is unique; most boys hang out with friends playing games, but he enjoys spending time with Yuan Yuan and You Xi…”
“Stop talking nonsense, Dad, eat your food,” Mei Fang complained about his father’s rambling.
“Oh, Meijuan doesn’t know about your past, so it’s okay for me to talk about it.”
Mei Lijun continued, “Remember when we were in fourth grade and were planning to move? Your friend You Xi and Xia Yuan kept begging my wife not to move. We nearly did, but thanks to them, we stayed…”
Mei Fang felt annoyed hearing his father boast. This old man didn’t mention the Xiaoli car incident at all…
“Yuan Yuan, You Xi, do you remember that?”
Lin You Xi nodded, “I remember, Uncle Mei… I was very sad that day. We had dinner at your place, and then I cried and ran away.”
“Yes, yes, that incident. Did my son catch you?”
Lin You Xi nodded again, “He caught me, Uncle Mei. I hugged him and cried, asking him not to leave.”
“Oh, I haven’t heard that story!” Mei Lijun was delighted.
“Can you tell it, You Xi?”
Mei Fang winked at Lin You Xi, but she remained calm, sipping soup.
“Look at my son, getting upset over past stories. You should be more mature like You Xi, hahaha!”
Mei Lijun laughed heartily, truly displaying leadership qualities.
“From the look of it, I wonder who he will end up with… It must be tough to choose!”
Liang Meijuan felt uneasy, “This… isn’t the right time to discuss such matters, Director Mei…”
“Just call me Lijun, not Director, it sounds strange, hahaha!”
As the instigator, Mei Lijun didn’t seem concerned and continued speaking freely, “Considering your relationship, you must have thought about it, right, You Xi?”
“Uncle Mei, we should focus on our studies now and not think about such things.”
Lin You Xi reminded him.
“Hahaha! I meant discussing future matters.”
Mei Lijun smiled, “In any case, I think you and Yuan Yuan are both outstanding. Our son is lucky to know you. First, if he ever treats you badly, I’ll definitely step in. But don’t fight over him, it’s not worth it—”
“Dad, talking about this is too rude.”
Mei Fang stepped on Mei Lijun’s foot, whispering, “Aren’t you afraid I’ll tell Mom?”
“Fine, fine, let’s stop talking about this… Eat, eat.”
So, the two families continued eating. Lin You Xi wasn’t bothered by Mei Lijun’s explicit topics and smiled at Mei Fang, serving him a large chicken leg.
She handled it with practiced ease, almost like a little wife.
I apologize for the delay! I was sick last night and couldn’t sleep, so I woke up late. I updated without eating or brushing my teeth. Three thousand words is decent, right? Haha.
I won’t be late for the update at 6:30 PM. If the coal boss wins tonight, I’ll add another chapter.
