Chapter 175: The Situation We Can’t Change
A quiet night has passed.
The next morning, everyone in the camp woke up bright and early.
Of course, the earliest risers were the cooks.
Time was of the essence, and the soldiers needed to finish breakfast quickly so they could fill their bellies and have the strength to march.
This meant they had to wake up even earlier than everyone else.
Thus, by dawn, thick smoke began to rise throughout the camp, accompanied by a delicious aroma of meat wafting through the air.
Though they hadn’t seen the food yet, just the smell had the soldiers convinced that breakfast would be delightful.
Enticed by the food, almost every soldier appeared to be full of vigor.
While the soldiers were lining up for breakfast, Arthur and Airael were doing their morning patrol through the camp.
Seeing the two, all the soldiers showed great respect.
Watching the soldiers’ satisfied expressions, Arthur felt quite pleased.
If you wanted the soldiers to listen to you and fight alongside you, you couldn’t skimp on their needs.
Arthur understood that concept very well.
Not to mention, simply treating the soldiers to a delicious breakfast was a great way to achieve that.
After breakfast, the Legion began to assemble, and the soldiers returned to their respective formations.
Once the lines were drawn, Arthur scanned the soldiers and simply commanded, “Let’s move out!”
No hesitation whatsoever.
Immediately, the entire unit began marching down the main road.
Observing the pace of the march, Arthur frowned slightly.
Although it was a bit faster than yesterday, it was still too slow.
“Relay the order to speed up the march! We’re moving too slowly; did we eat so much this morning for nothing?”
Then, Arthur addressed his personal guard led by Cain.
It was clear Arthur was a tad bit irked.
Cain, not daring to slack off, promptly took a few guards and went to relay Arthur’s orders.
“Legion Commander’s orders, everyone speed up the march!”
“Legion Commander’s orders, everyone speed up the march!”
…
They galloped on horseback while shouting.
The officers who heard the commands remembered the urgent meeting Arthur held the previous night and hastily urged their men to quicken their pace.
In the army, commands held true weight, and besides, they had no complaints about Arthur.
He fully deserved the title.
They didn’t think they could measure up to him.
Thus, the speed of the march increased greatly in an instant.
The soldiers didn’t ponder too much philosophy; although they grumbled a bit, they were met with their officer’s relentless admonition.
“Did you eat so well this morning, and now you have no energy?”
That question left the soldiers utterly speechless.
They rarely got to enjoy such a sumptuous breakfast.
So, they could only bury their heads and keep marching.
Drifting under the officer’s pressing urgency, their pace quickened significantly.
Seeing the marching speed finally picking up, Arthur was considerably more pleased.
If there was anything that still bothered him, it was that although they were moving faster now, it was still too slow compared to his previous experiences.
At this moment, Arthur felt like this Legion was completely dragging him down.
“Arthur, for a Legion of considerable size, this speed is already quite fast,” Airael remarked, noticing Arthur’s lingering dissatisfaction.
Sometimes, not everything can be solved by haste.
Cain, who had just received the orders, paused at Airael’s words and continued to wait for Arthur’s subsequent command as if nothing had happened.
“Ailia, I was thinking, perhaps we could send an elite small team ahead to Mils Fortress first!”
Arthur turned to Airael, expressing his thoughts.
“That’s a good idea, but if the Dark Elves are led by Mork himself, I don’t think anyone in our current team can defeat him,” Airael coldly shot down Arthur’s enthusiasm.
While both teams were elite squads, ours simply couldn’t compare.
Especially since they might be led by a Twelve-tier Warrior.
In such a scenario, even our best might be akin to sending ourselves to our doom.
To deal with them, the only option would be to rely on numbers.
And even if it came down to numbers, each individual in that group would have to possess a certain level of quality.
If we sent in ordinary folks, it would just create more chaos.
“But the situation at Mils Fortress is extremely urgent! If we don’t send someone quickly, I genuinely fear something terrible might happen!”
“That’s just how it is!” Airael replied, quite helpless.
With Mork being such an overwhelming presence, the initiative lay completely with the Dark Elves, leaving them in a very passive position.
Just then, Cain suddenly interjected, “Actually, I don’t think we need to worry so much about Mils Fortress.”
Arthur and Airael turned their attention to him.
“Even if the Dark Elves could swiftly capture Mils Fortress with an elite team, capturing it is easy, but it won’t be so simple for them to defend it afterward with just a small squad.”
Thanks to Cain’s reminder, Arthur felt considerably relieved, but not entirely.
“True, but it would be best if Mils Fortress doesn’t fall at all.”
Not to mention, just one point: if Mils Fortress fell, given the Dark Elves’ style, they’d definitely ransack it thoroughly.
In that case, even if they managed to reclaim Mils Fortress later, it wouldn’t be the same.
“If that’s the case, I’m willing to go ahead first.”
Upon hearing this, Cain eagerly volunteered.
Arthur looked at Cain in surprise.
He knew that this mission was likely to be dangerous.
After a moment, Arthur finally spoke up, “Cain, you don’t need to be so brave. Mils Fortress is important, but we just need to do our best.”
Cain was one of the subordinates he had worked hard to win back, and he didn’t want to watch him throw his life away.
Appreciative of Arthur’s concern, Cain felt a warm glow inside.
Nevertheless, he still decided to go; for him, it was a challenge and an opportunity to show his skills.
Although he was under Arthur now, he couldn’t rely on him alone and needed to demonstrate his capabilities as well.
“My lord, I truly appreciate your concern, but please rest assured, I will act according to my abilities.”
Hearing this, Arthur felt a sigh of relief but still didn’t want to let him go.
His earlier thoughts had been cast aside.
He wasn’t a philanthropist and didn’t need to bear the burden of a situation he couldn’t change.
