Chapter 144: Eternal Fame is Not My Goal
Airael grumbled, “I’ve been awake for ages!”
As soon as she spoke, a thought struck her and she quickly asked Arthur, “By the way, where did you go this morning?”
Arthur looked at Airael and replied, “I went to Earl Stanford’s house.”
“Oh!”
Upon hearing Arthur’s answer, Airael nodded and decided not to dwell on it any longer.
She already knew what Arthur was up to at those noble houses without needing to ask further.
All she needed to remember was the name of Earl Stanford.
In the following conversation, Airael swiftly changed the subject.
“Did you have lunch yet?”
As she spoke, Airael reached the door, opened it, and stepped inside.
“No!”
Arthur gently shook his head.
He had intended to return and have lunch with Airael.
“Are you hungry now?”
As Airael walked into the room, she turned around, leaning against the door, and looked at Arthur.
Caught off guard by the question, Arthur found himself momentarily taken aback.
He sensed there was some deeper meaning behind it.
“Hey, I’m asking you! Are you hungry or not?”
Seeing Arthur lost in thought, Airael shouted a bit impatiently.
“Yes, I’m hungry!”
Snapped back to reality, Arthur replied instinctively.
Even though he’d eaten breakfast and hadn’t done much physical work all morning, a meal was still a meal.
Besides, he had come back to take Airael for lunch together; it would be awkward to claim he wasn’t hungry.
“Since you’re hungry, go eat first. If you have something to do, come find me afterward.”
With that, Airael turned to walk into the room and closed the door behind her.
Arthur stood there, momentarily stunned.
What just happened?
Wasn’t she hungry and didn’t want to have lunch?
“Mr. Axi, we just had a filling meal outside with the lady,” Celia’s voice chimed in to explain as Arthur tried to process it all.
While Arthur understood the reason, he was momentarily at a loss for words.
So, he had come back for nothing?
“I see, then I’ll go have lunch first.”
No matter how unfortunate the situation, he had to accept it. Arthur responded and walked out of the inn.
Celia and Aurora exchanged glances at his dejected figure, letting out quiet sighs.
They could see that Arthur had returned wanting to have lunch with their Queen, but unfortunately, they and the Queen had already eaten their fill.
Inside the room, Airael closed the door behind her, removed her cloak, tossed it onto the sofa, and flopped onto the bed.
At that moment, she had completely abandoned any concern for her image.
But since she was alone, there was no need to care too much anyway.
After lying on the bed and clearing her mind for a while, Airael started to ponder things.
She had refrained from overthinking earlier to enjoy her food and shopping leisurely, but now that she had some free time, it was important to analyze things properly.
After all, her identity was significant.
She wasn’t the kind of carefree little girl who could live without a care.
Her status destined her life would not be an easy one.
But with effort, there would be rewards.
If she performed well enough, even if she didn’t achieve eternal fame, merely being remembered fondly for a lifetime would satisfy her.
This was Airael’s innermost thought, a small desire, perhaps even an ideal.
At that moment, Airael was dwelling on the army she encountered in the morning.
This wasn’t a trivial matter.
After all, that was an elite troop.
Not a ragtag bunch.
Furthermore, even the movement of such ragtag troops wasn’t insignificant.
If this chosen unit were indeed dispatched by the Machia Republic to support the northern war, then the situation in the north was truly grim for humanity.
Additionally, it should be noted that this war against the Orcs led by humans could significantly impact the entire world structure.
Every action taken in this conflict had immense global repercussions.
However, this also presented opportunities for many.
With the northern war entrenched in adversity, it was the most conducive time for heroes to emerge.
Only in such circumstances could they showcase their might and leave a lasting impression on people.
In other words, this situation was an opportunity for Arthur.
However, with opportunity came a formidable challenge.
It was a massive war where individual strength was extremely limited.
Unlike previous experiences where they had faced merely local skirmishes, Arthur would need to show not only his personal prowess but also various other skills to turn the tide for the human army in adversity.
Skills like outstanding leadership and strategy.
Exceptional leadership would enable Arthur to effectively lead those soldiers and generals.
After all, a war couldn’t be won by one person alone; soldiers and generals were also vital components.
As for strategy, it goes without saying that he needed to come up with solutions to the current issues.
Only with solutions in hand could he lead people to overcome challenges.
After analyzing these thoughts thoroughly in her mind, Airael suddenly realized that everything she had been pondering was entirely related to Arthur; she hadn’t considered anything else at all.
Take her relationship with the Elven Race into account—what role would they play? Should they even get involved?
However, the realization made it difficult for Airael to calm her mind.
She feared that if she continued to think about it, it would lead her right back to Arthur again.
That would truly be terrifying!
Airael suddenly felt quite flustered.
She thought that Arthur shouldn’t hold such importance in her life.
Although she admired Arthur, and they’d become quite close, he was also the designated father of her future child. Yet, all this should be part of her planning for the future and unrelated to personal feelings.
In other words, Airael believed she was merely fulfilling a mission she had set for herself.
Everything was for the sake of the mission, devoid of personal emotions.
Yet, reality constantly reminded her that things were not as simple as she thought.
Feelings are complicated; some people fall in love at first sight, while others can live together their whole lives without ever developing any emotions at all.
Not to mention the complicated relationship between her and Arthur.
Just the fact that he was the father of her child was enough to stir various emotions within Airael.
